I remember when Martix Revolutions (last movie) came out and a lot of people said it sucked and they hated the ending. It didn't suck, it was a quality movie and light years ahead of its time. We just didn't like the way the story played out. But the story was justified. It wasn't jarring, it made sense. It just didn't leave me or many viewers fulfilled. But quality picture? No question.
Dragon Age Inquisition likewise is a good "Action RPG" game. Lots of fights, amazing textures, a decent story, some flexibility of how you play and the how the story will unfold.
It is a terrible excuse for a traditional RPG game. But was that ever what it was supposed to be? If it wasn't, then I think we need to accept it more like the 3rd Matrix movie, not what I would have wanted, but a justifiable execution and valid choices on the part of the developers.
Traditional RPG quests would have us escort the captured soliders back to base. We would be finding traitor spies in towns requiring us to question everyone, have our rogue break into homes and use stealth to over hear secret conversations. Find uber hidden spells, find parts ot a new weapon and have it reforged with a blacksmith, who, will only do it if he likes us enough. Lastly, and most importantly, our playing reflexes never matter. No mad Halo skills required...ever. Sure some special jumps that need to be hit, some timing to make it through a fire maze...but we would never need to time our buttons to live or die. We set up strategy, go, and modify. DO:O was like this, a glorified turn-based combat system, not lighting fast flipping rogues you can't see.
Action RPG's like Wolfenstein (wow amazing action RPG there) do not require every person to conversed with. You do not need an expanded inventory, can have buildings that you cannot enter. Have side quests that is fetch and return with only some text to "attempt" to add flavor. That is all totally fine, because in the end, give me the Grenade launcher and let me blow up Nazi's dude!
That's what DA:I is. An action RPG that even further extended its depth over the DA2. Wayyyyyyyyy short in terms of depth over a traditional RPG, but for an action game, wow lots going on.
Problem is, I fell in love with DA:O and really only want the traditional RPG games. I want to enter every home, talk to almost every NPC. Expect most of them to give me a quest or be part of one. Have merchants who sell all kinds of wild stuff. Equip boots, helm, chest, hands, and, have them all look different. Have some real "characters" in my party...."Boo" anyone?
DA:2 got hammered for being more of an action RGP and a flat one at that. DA:I promised to change all that. It did add depth. It just didn't steer back to a traditional RPG.
I do not know if that was promised, and, if it was then shame on Bioware for hoodwinking the players who spent hard earned cash to dive back into the world they love and have missed.
If it wasn't promised, then, this is a solid sequal Action Based RPG game...totally justified...just totally not my cup of tea.
I post in case anyone else was looking for a way to place a "point" on their disappointment.
P.S. The fighting whoa, I must be an old man. I can't tell WTF is happening. The enemy rogues are all superhuman "Flash" meta human teleporting all over the place. Swords swinging faster than the eye can see...damn. If I could put my own character on AI I would. I turned down the vegetation and spell particles as much as I could hoping I could see better those amazing models...can't, its all over too quickly. I just button mash and watch my health for a potion. Fun for many, just not for me.
Thanks all for reading.
