How do you know if armor will have mod slots before you craft it?

Today I crafted two sets of medium armor, both had a masterwork slot when I was crafting it but after making them I went over to the mod bench and saw that one had slots for mods but the other only had the bonus stat from the masterwork slot, no slots for adding mods.

So, what am I missing here?  How do you know before you craft an item if it will be able to use mods?

Thanks

Trial and error I guess. I don't get why doesn't every armor have mod slots. The crafting system is really nice, but the recipes are kinda crap. They're so few and underwhelming.

Like I got the Templar armor schematic. Cool. Except I can't use it for looks AND stats, despite what they said during the preview streams. Templar armor doesn't come with mod slots. So I have to use another armor if I want to be maxed. I thought the system would be similar to GW2's trasmute system. Keep the stats and the cosmetics.

Just save before you craft anything. Then check to make sure you can apply the upgrades you want.

The guide is no help whatsoever. It's just as general as the game with explanations.

Just look at the utility/defense slots each requires more than 4 mats then they probably wont have upgrades..

From what I have seen, I think you can tell by the color of the icon.  If the schematic has a gold color it will have mod slots.  If it is more of the normal white icon it will not have mod upgrade slots.  As a previous poster already noted it seems the more iconic armor (Templar, warden, legion of the dead, etc.) is the normal kind that does not support armor mods which is really disappointing.  Of course, I have not finished the game so maybe there are "gold" schematic for those somewhere but I have only seen them for the more generic gear.

Any of the armors that are "special" i.e. Templar, Dalish, Orlesian do not have upgrade slots. Only the "generic" armors do.
