Anyone who is struggling with the party AI

I'll admit to having 'issues' with the new behaviors and tactics. I came across a post on gamefaqs - full credit to the author there 'themasterllwork' - I followed his advice and I have to say that I am having way more fun and now my party is doing 'sort of' what I expect rather than all running around at random:

 

Global Settings
Potion Keep: 2
Use Potion at: 30% HP
 
 
Me Follow (Me), Reserve: 30% Stamina, Priority: Whirlwind, Grapple
Cass Follow (Cass), Reserve: 50% Stamina, Priority: Warcry, Bodyguard
Varric Defend (Me), Reserve: 30% Stamina, Priority: Poison Weapon, Full Draw
Solas Defend (Cass), Reserve 50% Mana, Priority: Barrier, Revive
 
My toon is a dual wield rogue so I adjusted my skill Priority accordingly. There is another great post in the same thread about setting mages to use no potions which has helped a ton.

Hmm playing nightmare myself and no big problems so far. I did however get 30+ hours of experience on hard before rerolling nightmare for an actual challenge. I rarely ever use tactical cam, but I have used pause to some degree. 

Your tactics seem fine. I myself set mana/stamina reserve to 0% though.

My AI experience has been pretty smooth, but then I tried a dragon fight, and Varric's AI drove me batty.  I had to turn off the game and walk away for awhile out of disgust.  I do find that micromanaging in Tac Mode helps out a great deal, as placement and targeting orders you give in Tac Mode stay on, even if you switch back to camera mode.

if im at a distance, and enemies are visible on the "radar" thing (red dots) and even in eye shot, my party will stand there and do nothing most of the time. i have to pull aggro for the first one to move, and sometimes they still dont. played with all the settings but im finding that there is no intelligence in this so called "AI"

17 hours in, and I realized last night that on PC at least, you can target the enemy you want to pull, and press 'Y', and your party will go ahead and attack them. This means that as a rogue I don't need to pull aggro. I stealth up and go after mages/archers.

Help me keep my ranged characters at range and I'll be happy. Varric and sera are the worst i am constantly moving them out of melee range on boss fights and they always find a way to creep back up to the front to get curb stomped.

I don't see how the AI in this game got dumber instead of smarter in 2014

I set Blackwall to follow Blackwall and everyone else to defend Blackwall and I rarely, if ever, have my 3 other ranged characters move into melee range. An archer (myself) and two mages. The only time I have to manually move them is in fights with mobs that are spread out so much it's impossible for Blackwall to pull them all in one shot.

Not sure if you're using this but if you double-right click (or right click to set a movement mark, and then right click again on that mark) the AI will move to and hold position. This has never not worked for me.

 

I sure do miss the profiles of the previous games though...
