so I've been doing some research on what schools of magic should be used to create a great mage. Sadly there are just mixed opinions on the subject. I see this a lot, "the mage is very powerful, but you have to know how to use it correctly. So my question is how do you truly use a mage is DA:O., does it mean the type of magic or the armor or even mobility, or even the party. Also is there a race i should be for the ultimate mage? My plan is to be a Blood mage, so ya know kinda a bad guy.

It depends how you want to play. I can post what I did with my mage, as I had a lot of fun with it. but basics first, magec are a devastating power on the battlefield, both to your enemies and your teammates. Depending on the dificulty level you will be playing, you might need to adapt your playstyle a little.

What I did with my mage was simple. I wanted a guy, who is capable of directing the flow of battle. So here come my spells I picked.

Class:

Mage 4x4

Blood Mage 4x4

Primal:

Cold 4x4

Earth 4x4

Creation:

none

Spirit:

Mana alteration 4x4

Entropy:

Hexes 4x4

Draining 4x4

That's my core, but it leaves a lot of points to distribute further. What I achived with this, was the ability to do what I want. Any enemy mage that appeared on the battlefield was most likely a one-hit KO with Mana Clash. Any bigger guy was first targeted by a Curse of Mortality, then if the team was in danger I put a Misdirection Hex. the only real AoE is Blood Wound, but on higher levels you will want to avoid those spells as they will fall your entire team in no time. You have some Shattering posibilities as well as a good sustained damage. Rock Armor will add to survivability and Frost Weapons is always nice to have. But you might want to avoid too high fatigue as it will increase the ammount of health needed to cast spells.

@ Bombsquad: What is a great mage? There are many different answers. For ultimate survivability you could go Arcane Warrior. For maximum nukage and devastation you could create a mage who focusses everything on damage-dealing (damage spells, hexes) and goes for big nukes like Entropic Death and Storm of the Century.

But. The former would be a yawn fest since AWs are below-average spellcasters and mostly have to bore enemies to death one by one. The latter would be a dead duck without a capable tank in the party and not very effective without a good crowd-control mage to keep the enemy pinned in the AoE of damage spells (glyphs, paralysis explosion) or to slow them down to increase exposure (Earthquake).

Entropic Death and Storm of the Century cost loads of spell points. If you invest those in a bit of crowd control instead, then you can create a one-elf army that is just as devasting as the pure nuker but who has enough crowd control for soloing on nightmare. Without pulling, retreating or kiting, excepting rare cases like when a bossy ogre or a revenant resists one spell too many.

Have a look at the mage-related videos in our Collection of videos demonstrating fighting styles and techniques for demos and inspiration. For example, the tactics I used with Githany for doing The complete Tower of Ishal battle in 10 minutes are essentially those of my last nightmare solo, except that Ajira needed a few minutes more without the extra DPS from the team.
