Is it possible to recover your material from a piece of armor or a weapon you crafted? There is an option in the Inventory screen to destroy but I think that is just to reduce your inventory if you are full and need the room for some good items.
I can remove upgrades but I don't see anything that allows me to break them apart or to break down a piece of armor I built.

Been hunting dragonlins? for the their scales for flame resistant material and mess up the first time using the material. Since I can't kill dragons yet, little hairy getting material.
