What do people think about this article, I haven't played long enough but I've noticed that distinctive art style from Origins slip away with each sequel which is a shame, I did like it

side note - the PC controls are horrendous.

The "dark fantasy art" people refer to in Origins is basically the ****-brown shader that permeated the entire game.

Nothing to see here.

Have you play far enough?
DAI is dark enough.

That art style wasn't even theirs anyway, it was the generic RPG art style of that time, which is probably why it got tossed in DA2 and what we got in DA2 carried over to a certain extent.

Looks the same to me.

The writer also seemingly doesn't know that Lelianna wasn't retconned.

In other words, "How Dragon Age moved from generic clone of tolkien universe to something with some form of originality to it."

I guess, if you don't know anything about Tolkien.

Seems just as dark as Origins to me.

Less brown maybe, but not darker.

I couldn't disagree with anything he said. Life in medieval societies was brutal, cruel, and unfair, and games in that setting shouldn't be afraid to present that reality; if it offends SJWs who want to sanitise history, so be it, nothing of value is being lost.

The unrelenting brutality of life is one of the things Witcher does really well, but which Dragon Age has either skated around the edges of, or (more recently) conspicuously ignored. Developers creating dark, adult-oriented games should not allow themselves to be cowed by the Tumblr shriekers from exploring the darker aspects of human nature, because that way lies the most pervasive and insidious form of censorship - self-censorship.

I think Stephen Fry's comment about people complaining of being offended is apt:
“It's now very common to hear people say, 'I'm rather offended by that.' As if that gives them certain rights. It's actually nothing more... than a whine. 'I find that offensive.' It has no meaning; it has no purpose; it has no reason to be respected as a phrase. 'I am offended by that.' Well, so ****ing what."

If anything I felt more like I was playing a sequel to Origins than DA2 with the art style and darkness of the story. Not sure what the author of that article is on about.

Something about how tanned/black people break his immersion and that they should be rarer.

I don't know.

The game got really focused on sidequests, that's what changed. The game seems short if you don't complete them

I like the art style in DAI much more. DAO, as much as I will love the game until I die, could also be titled 'Fifty Shades of Brown'.

Also, apparently having female characters not get raped constantly is offensive as well.

Yeah. **** this article and the ******* who wrote it.

The article wasn't primarily about the art style. It says Dragon Age has lost its identity as a dark fantasy setting. While I wouldn't go so far to say it's lost its identity, I think he has a point. A dark setting derives its appellation not from the presence of brutality, injustice and moral grey as such, but from *casual* brutality, injustice and moral grey that's present in everyday situations, and of that there is significantly less in DAI than in DAO. I also blame the people who cry "racism" when you can't play a black-skinned character or "misogyny" when rape is presented as widespread in the setting. Not glossing over bad stuff that can't plausibly be absent is another identifying mark of a dark setting, and DAI can reasonably be accused of that. Nothing truly bad happens in DAI outside of the influence of the main plot. It doesn't matter so much since there isn't any city setting where such things would happen predominantly, but it is noticeable.

Compare DA2 which showed the city elves' poverty, or DAO with its casual abuse of nobles' privileges. I see little of such things in DAI.

Yeah, I can't play DAO without SweetFX & ENB. It's just brown, not dark.

Yes. How dare BioWare decide "Hey, we haven't really handled racial diversity well in the past. Maybe we should fix that."

Or "Hey, every time we try to use rape as some sort of narrative shortcut for darkness, it comes off as really hamfisted, and probably makes quite a large number of people uncomfortable. Maybe we should back off on that."

IMO, the only games that represented well the darkness and brutality of medieval era are Witcher 1 and 2.

They weren't afraid of taboos and put rape and racism when and where they thought it would fit. In the end it worked in favor of the game.

From the Article:

There are now people of all ethnicities in Thedas...this feels out of place. It's not just pandering to Bioware's social justice followers on Tumblr and at conventions, it's downright ****** offensive to me...

I'm ok with this -- Thedas needed a little flavor.

I don't fully understand this arugment. Dragon age was never meant to be historically accurate. It is a fantasy setting with countries that are LOOSELY inspired by real countries. That's it.
