I'm so confused.

People want characters to have agency...but when they refuse to budge on something (and have no negativity towards the PC saying no) it's an issue?

I completely understand not wanting to romance Bull that's fine. as well as feeling he's completely wrong and being patronizing.

And yeah the safe word conversation should've happened before the sex scene.

But why is there an issue with him only wanting a certain kind of relationship with the PC? Just say no if you're not into it. You weren't compatible.

I agree with this. But I think a big part of the issue is that Bull is the only other M/M option besides Dorian. (Not a bad thing for me since I like Dorian so much).  So anyone not really into that doesn't have much of a choice. Right now, I don't think I can go through with IB's romance, but I like him as a character.

Eww you let the chargers die.

You monster.

</3

(joking obv)

Oh, trust me, that was a decision I didn't take lightly.  I loved the Chargers.

In the end, though, in addition to the Qunari being a much welcomed and needed resource to combat Corypheus, my Inquisitor has big ideas for world peace -- Ferelden, Orlais, Tevinter, and Par Vollen alike -- and a historic alliance with the Qunari would be a very significant step toward achieving that goal -- and likewise, a very significant step backward if my Inquisitor was to break his word to them.

A sacrifice had to be made.  The Chargers were soldiers, each knowing what he or she signed up for, and they died as heroes...and according to Cole, even in their final moments when they knew that death was inevitable, they had no regrets.  While I'm not at all happy that they lost their lives (I will never get used to that empty chair in the Skyhold tavern), I am at peace with my decision.

I'm just glad bioware was brave enough to add a romance like this into the game. There were some things that they could have done better, I agree. But I don't know how heavily populated Bioware's bdsm division is, so this was probably a learning experience for them too.

I just head cannon the first sex scene being Bull demonstrating, teaching, showing. Kind of like a preview, just to test the waters. Then they talk if it's something they actually want to pursue afterwards, and take it from there. A first sex scene like that would work fine without a safe word, assuming that if the Inquisitor says something along the lines of "AHDKDHSLFKHG STAHP", Bull will stop just as responsibly as he would if they said "Katoh."

Smooths things out nice for me, and I can sink into a character relationship that I can really get behind.

Or in front of.

Cuz you know.

Heh.

Eh everyone has two options except f/m people. Someone might not like Cass being religious or Josephine not having a sex scene. (or both of them being human) You're not always going to get LIs you like sadly. I for one in origins was completely repulsed by Zevran so I pretty much had just Alistair for a straight option (and then DR BS occured and I ran to Leliana >_> ) As long as you don't get one shot at finding someone you like (because really it is BS for a "you like X or you're screwed.") I don't see anything wrong with it hopefully you'll get something more to your preferences next game.

Oh good.

Ah yeah I don't trust the Qunari at all. And they don't strike me as the type to continue playing likely after Cory was defeated. Worst comes to worse they were still not going to let Tevinter grab red lyrium because it'd stop their war.

True enough. I just can't do it. Plus I prefer Bull as Tal Vashoth (maybe he'll stop ragging on them now.)

Iron Bull and Dorian are the only characters who have romance scenes that have actually made me blush.

They both have great charisma and romantic tension.

Their romance is really sweet, my favorite in the game by far ^_^ (I haven't done Cullen's, Sera's or Josephine's yet though so we'll see).

Cullen's romance is

I think Cullen's romance is one of my favorites in the DA series. Right after Fenris.

Quite a bit of lifestyle shaming going on in this thread. Sometimes I get used to the more liberal mindset you tend to find on the internet but then some people are always kind enough to tug me back down to earth.

Romance is definitely not for me, as I have severe issues with this kind of relationship. But I don't think there was anything shady about it. Bull certainly didn't force anything on the quizzy.

Yep. That's my situation. I romanced Bull because I disliked him the least, and the BDSM stuff was ultimately very shocking and unsettling for me. But I'm not a Dorian fan at all. The sad part... I'm a huge romance fan :( So DAI makes me really, really sad. I've played it once and probably won't play it again. This coming from someone who's played both DAs and all MEs multiple times.

I look at the other three guys, and how their romances are so serious and passionate and romantic. And I just feel crushed.

I love Dorian and Iron Bulls romances personally. Just embrace them and enjoy them for what they are. Both very well done imo :)

Different people have different expectations. I kinda want some sweet romance. Iron Bull seems to be very much about sex and breaks up if you disagree on some aspects of it. I'm not a fan of Dorian's gay storyline. I would have prefer for a romance that has no relation to the LI being gay. I'm disappointed with the gay romance and for the first time goes straight (Cassandra) in a Bioware game instead since none of the gay romance interests me. I want some mushy romance.

Not every romance has to be flowers and chocolate. My idea of romance is chopping the head off a Dragon and then sharing a lovely kiss in front of its gory remains. Then afterwards, reminiscing our glorious battle after a night of romance (chains included) and cuddling.

That's what I think my Elf and IB would do.

For those who think that the options of how to deal with this situation is too limited and that it doesn't offer enough possibilities for the player to do it another way or that not enough explanation is done: keep in mind that the writer's are working on a limited word budget here.

Romance is completely optional content and including dialogues for 8 romances is hard enough. That means every romance has to be tied to one specific angle and one specific way. If you don't like it that way, chose another romance. The game simply can't compete with full fleshed out romance novels with focus only on bdsm relationships.

Saying that you want a different kind of relationship with Bull is kind of like saying you want a different realtionship with Josi or Cassandra.

For those who prefer or only capable of playing as one sexual orientation, within the 2 options given for m/m romance, there wasn't any of it. Dorian is more about gay and social stigma and Iron Bull was more light and focus on sex. Would have prefer for at least one romance to go the way of flowers and chocolate, something sweet like Kaidan or Alistair. Honestly, there was some elements of it in Dorian, but I just got put off by the gay issue. I play games to escape from being judge and look down, not being reminded time and time again over many times in TV or games of how bad it sucks to be gay. That's why even with the lack of sweetness, I still prefer Iron Bull over Dorian when I actually want to do a m/m one.

It doesn't suck to be gay. Bioware is expanding and doing different types of relationships, as you said Kaidan and Steve Cortez provide a lovey dovey m/m experience, now they are trying something different with Dorian. I liked it and thought it was extremely well written and actually very relevant. Plus I feel there is an element of softness and vulnerability with Dorian, it is not ALL about him being gay.

Nah, Steve's relationship is all about his dead gay lover, it keeps being reminded throughout the storyline. I'm disappointed of how the first gay NPC and first gay companion is about their gayness. You don't see Samantha or Sera's storyline involved them being lesbians. Someone said that it would the equivalent of if Sera were a Dalish and they kicked her out for being a lesbian and don't produce more elven children. Samantha is someone who happens to be a lesbian who likes other girls; it's not being a part of her storyline. I did acknowledge Dorian's elements of sweetness in my previous post, but his story is just hit too close to home for me. It's like with Krem when they tried to avoid transgender drama being written into the characters for fear that it would be too close to what many transgender experience, that is what I feel when I see Dorian's storyline. Like I said, if you enjoy it then good for you. We all have different expectations when it comes to romance.

I do hope so, too. The options in this game kinda dampen my playthroughs since I'm not a big fan of either options. I'm looking forward to ME4 and hoping that if they have a bi LI, it wouldn't just be the modified straight option. I would be happy if they have 2 options like with DAI and ME3 again, but this time, I hope the storyline doesn't have to do with them being gay. DA4 is still a long way away but if they have a gay KISA, I'm set.

I understand if Bull's romance isn't to your liking, but I gotta say he doesn't really "break up" with you since you're not in a relationship at that point.

It'd be different if you were together for a while, and THEN he brought up his proclivities, and THEN broke up with you... but he doesn't.
