You could just not use one of them. I don't use iron bull much and I've never heard this dialogue exchange ever.

 

At one point I tried to get their relationship to trigger - ran around for 30+ hours with them both in my party. Closest I got was some of the more "flirty" banter from Iron Bull towards Dorian. 

 

Then I realized if their relationship did start, Dorian will stick around for Iron Bull - and not cos I'm his best and only friend. And my sad little Lavellan needs her best friend Dorian. So I gave up.

Well that is a good point. My Lavellan wouldn't want to lose her adorable bestie! They can stay single then, methinks.

Omg so I just got the conversation with IB about my inquisitor needing this, and I have to say his response offended me I was like "excuse me!!??" But after what he said what he gets out of it I lol'd I mean it was almost kinda sweet. And then during that one bedroom scene my inquisitor said "wait this was just a job to you.." He then says "it wasn't just a job, come here" I was like aaawwww

Afterwards while I was running around killing **** I was still thinking about their conversation and it totally depends on the player themselves but he IS right. Me personally I like a man who takes charge and who is dominate and Bull is exactly that. And its not just sex on his end I mean if it was he wouldn't call you Kadan which means "my heart" and another thing he said that had a good point in my opinion if you did the tough love quest he says "you must be getting something out of it you like, or you wouldn't have gone out and hunted down that dragons tooth."...again he is right lol.

Iron Bulls romance is not your typical sweet fairy tale romance and its definitely not for everyone. But I have come to really enjoy it. Its very mature and different, raunchy but also at the same time he can be so sweet with her. I will most definitely romance him more than once...him and Cullen so far are my favs

The establishing of rules coming before all the action really should be easy to learn about when you do a little research. It's the most important rule of BDSM after all. This implementation is just lazy and poorly done. The writer did know about safe words after all, because the conversation is there. But they just went with the awkward "ride the Bull" nonsense first and then added the "I know what you need" mind-reading to the rules dialogue. Bleh.

 

Or perhaps their primary concern when designing romances in what is supposed to be (or what was at some point supposed to be) medieval fantasy isn't adhering perfectly to what a small and incredibly sqeamish part of the population of 21st century western countries considers to be proper sexual etiquette.

So you think that Bull is into the BDSM scene? Did he visit bdsm clubs in Seheron on a regular basis and signed up on bdsm social networks to discuss how to handle SSC principles with his fellow Qunari?
Or does the Qun contain a passage that says "though shall not bind your toy to the bed without clarifying the stopword"?

 

Are we sure Bull is written to be accurately depicting the BDSM scene/lifestyle....or is the whole "bondage" theme in his romance really just because he is supposed to represent "The Devil" (in the tarot deck)? In other words, is it more about voluntary bondage and how you have the power to free yourself at any time by saying no if you don't like a relationship or situation you are in. So in that context, maybe the whole "stop word" convo coming after the fact is important since it's not always spelled out for you in real life.

 

Just a thought. I'm sure I'm thinking too much about it. But the whole "fool's journey" thing has been a theme for past 2 games now. In DA2, every single LI plays some kind of trick on you, pretty much.

To be fair, do we know all that much about BDSM in medieval society? If whips and chains excited my Inquisitor then that would be one thing, but isn't the safeword thing fairly recent? Granted it's not the only thing in DA that feels anachronistic, but it's one of them.

Err, I don't know about female with Dorian, you would be better off just not using them together. It is the banter that gets it started. If they don't get to that point in the banter to trigger it, it wont happen (and with the uses with banter, that shouldn't be a problem).

We probably shouldn't get into here since there was just a post about it and it stirred up some harsh feelings, but some people don't like the relationship due to other reasons and so would prefer not to have it happen.

Not really, if you don't hear it in banter, then it could or could not happen and it is up to you to decide if it does or not and I appreciate having that choice and be allowed to make that decision
