I recently bought ME1 (today) ahead of ME2 being released soon. its on disk and i attempted to install. It got about 75% of the way through, then came up with an error.

"Error opening file for writing

C:\\Program Files\\Mass Effect\\saferun.exe"

It then gives me 3 options, Abort (which cancels the installation) Retry (which merely brings up this same box again) and Ignore (which brings up a similar box, except with the file "C:\\Program Files\\Mass Effect\\saferun.dll")
once i click ignore on this the installation cancels anyway, telling me there was a data error, and the installation cannot complete.

Has anyone else had this problem, or do you know what i could possibly do to remedy this? please please help i have been looking forward to playing ME for a while now.

p.s. My disk drive tends to be tempremental, and it did not detect the mass effect disk a couple of times, could this be the issue?

You've pretty much concluded yourself that your disc drive is likely the issue. :) If you have a desktop you might want to see if you can try another drive. With a laptop, or with a desktop for that matter, you could see if there's a way to copy the install files to the hard drive first and then install from your HD. I have no experience there though.

Everybody is blaiming this on the disc drive, that can't be the issue. I'm having this exact same problem only I had this game working with this same hard drive and disc drive in a different computer. I then upgraded everything except for these two and installed windows 7. Now I have this ****ty problem, it cant be the hard/disc drive.
