Is there any way to keep my dumb mages out of the thick of battle?

So as a mage myself, I had a pretty easy time with combat by bringing an extra mage and an Archer. Dual barrier plus a full-Guard spec'ed tank means I usually took little to no damage as my three ranged toons would gladly stand far away from where Cassandra/Blackwall were getting mauled by six enemies with little to no effect.

Then I went Knight Enchanter. Oh boy... Apparently, now my other mage and archer seem to feel "well, she's running into the midst of that group of Rage Demons, we should probably follow her, even though we don't have a magically regenerating barrier!"

And just like that, suddenly they're gulping down three to four potions per battle. Aaaaarrggghhh!!! :(

Is there any way to get them to actually STAY out of the melee? Hold position doesn't work, and I can't be bothered to continuously send them back in Tactical mode. I even tried a "follow each other" loop but that really doesn't seem to do much either. They seem freaking determined to just be within 2 feet of me at ALL times...

Anyone know of a way to fix that/counter that?

(Also, why is the AI so much more terrible than it was in DA:O and DA2? :(  )

Yeah, I'm running into the same problem with dragon battles. My mages and archers don't understand their roles, running right up to the dragon's face and using Long Shot helps no one.

I think it's something that happens with the pathing / auto-group-rejoin mechanic, it can be VERY frustrating at times, especially when fighting dragons (where you already have to pause and order everybody to spread every time the dragon starts pulling everybody in). I have to pause and tacticam continuously on dragon fights, to keep moving everybody out of range.

Also, the moment they loose line of sight on the target, they'll start running. So the moment you see some pillars or something, you'll be in trouble.

Solutions: no idea here, I'm hoping BW improves upon it in the next patch. Some more AI tactical settings would be welcome too. It's the one thing I really miss from DA:O. The AI tactics customization we could do.

This is why I stopped bringing range characters to fights. Even if you go in to tactical and move them, and tell them to hold, they'll still at some point run back right up next to the enemy and I have no idea why. If you're going to have any ranged characters in your party, make sure it's the one you're controlling.

at first mine did the same and what I did to fix the problem is ....

freeze frame/pause

view area and park my mage/rogue first ---> separately into hold position

then park my off tank

then slowly freeze frame into position. After they reach each mark then I move in.

parking each before attack is what fixed. Group hold position does not work well, hold position individually does work.

The only two that 80percentnof the time do not stay in position thru an entire dragon fight run I've seen is Varrik and Solas. Everyone else listens as marked.

What I do to fix Varrik and Solas is park them behind objects completely out of line of sight. Then it works and they stay.

But I have to individually park each one separately before attack. But always be sure to deselect them and target your self first before release/attack.

Works this way for me, Sera in my experience so far is the Only party member that will hold or disengage when I ask her too same with Cassandra.

Everyone else I have to keep on a leash. The game is still frocken awesome tho and very much enjoying all it has to offer. And it ALOT of game for the price well worth the cost and has strong replay ability. I don't like the "UI" tho.

A simple "remain >=x meters from target" order is definitely needed.

Wow you got lucky. My mages and archers were all running into melee range right from the beginning of the game.

and this is why we need the old tactics options back.

I've also noticed that the ingame AI doesn't give a rat's backside for mages. Why the ranged rogues flip and flop out of range to ply their trade, but the apparently devil may care mages just stand right in the thick of things is beyond me? Unless I really need these guys, I usually just let them take their medicine and save the healing potions for those of us actually intended to melee enemies.

Same here. And I can't even spot them doing it because of all the flashy effects, and whatnot. It is so much colours and sparkles all around I can't even see my party.

Personally I love it when my squishier party members just stand in the path of an easily escapable AOE DOT attack and drink up all my potions

Been having this problem with Solas, "Hey I will get right up next to this electric-whip-wielding Pride Demon, what could possibly go wrong?".

All this time I thought it was just me with these idiot mages in my party.

It is infuriating!

I think my Archers and Mages need glasses! Apparently point blank range is the only range they are comfortable in fighting in.

I use the behavoir

DEFEND CASSANDRA

or whoever my tank is. Seems to work.

If I change that to

FOLLOW CASSANDRA

the character closes in on the enemy. Useful for Viv when she gets her specialisation.
