They're antiques, for all you know that really old clock in your entry hall might keep away demons as well. Come to think of it, have you seen any demons in your entry hall?
I'm sure given what we know post-game they don't do what Solas claims they do.
They probably just arouse Solas and he just made the whole "keep demon away" thing to get you to activate them.

I did the quest to find the powerful rift, but tbh I'm not sure what triggered it. Are you sure there's a connection with the artifacts?
[EDIT] After reading up some more, seems the connection is Solas' approval rating, not the quantity of artifacts activated. Since Solas slightly approves each time, you can mitigate all his snooty disapproval with every artifact you let him fondle.
The bug been fixed yet?
