Exactly why the Warden wasn't included?

The Warden could easily replace Stroud. Since Origins a decade has passed and in such a long period of time a person can change his thinking,  Therefore the argument, that people can expect the same behavior like in Origins is invalid. My Hawke was also not such a brawler, like in the fade mission in Inquisition.

And the decision in the fade would be a really difficult and meaningful one, instead of: protagonist of DA2 vs in case of Stroud, an almost unknown Grey Warden.

From a story perspective, if they were here they'd be affected the same way the other Wardens were, and who wants to see their Warden in that sorry state??

Something tells me that we will see her/him in DLC, after seeing Hawke we know they can do it, and I bet they won't miss the chance.

That would been the hardest choice to make in any BioWare game to date.

Has nothing to do with "apperance"

there are way too many variables.

does he live?

is he King?

and many small ones...   you basically would need to have to make 3 or 4 different Warden apperances

i can see why that seemed too much...

Turning a blank slate into an NPC is a serious pain in the ass with no upside.  Hawke is a fully developed character and therefore easy for them to write for.  The warden has no personality except in headcanon.  Therefore, every single warden is different. No way to write for that.  90% of the appeal of the HoF is the self insert ability that a voiceless, personality less template character allows.   Take that away by making an NPC with dialogue, personality, etc and you'll hear massive wailing.

Plus... you need a boatload of dialogue variations even if you got past that given how differently things could have turned out with respect to Leilana, the Warden's final state, and so on.

He certainly can't be the replacement for Stroud. Do you really think the playerbase would accept that their precious immaculate warden is on the run from the Grey Wardens?  There's already people whining about how Virmire decisions are sucky and shouldn't be in games. Imagine if it was a choice between two former player characters?  That's not going to have upside.

Not to mention if the Warden is King of Ferelden. He's sure not rampaging around Orlais in that situation.

Also, the fact is that the Warden isn't anything particularly irreplaceable.  The HoF is not head and shoulders above others in personal ability.  There's been plenty of other people on par with the warden in single combat.

Cynical answer:

DA:o was a 100% Bioware game.

DA II and DA:i are EA games.

You can really see the difference EA made on Bioware.

DA:o is one of the best story driven games, ever.

DA II was rushed. Insanely rushed so that they reused same areas many times.

In DA III EA have instead adding 150 hours of side quests "go here.. Find shareds. Go here. Drop stuff". DA III is HUGE but it quite boring to just walk around.

Adding the original warden would acknowledged that EA made the wrong decision in Dragon Age series by using different "hero" in each game.

(DA:I could have been so great. I feel how my character more and more believed he was chosen by Andraste. Why not let us play "renegade". Let us be a crazy religious leader that abuse the power)

Lots of reasons really mostly i imagine the character had no voice so they'd have to hire one and people would be like "My warden wouldn't sound like that" etc etc. It's also such a separate story from what is happening and it was pretty much complete. Warden saved the world and rode off into the sunset where as Hawke has connections to what is happening.

The warden also has pretty big connections, THEY ARE A GREY WARDEN lol. Corypheus messing with the grey wardens...>.>

Because  the Warden had no voice. Because the Warden had no easily identifiable personality that wouldn't ****** people off the second he said something inconsistent with their vision of what their Warden should be. (Hawke had a voice and three basic personality options in DA2 that could easily be flagged and carried over using the keep. The Warden was more complicated.) Because the Warden can be dead for a lot of players and, in fact, is dead by default.

But more importantly, why should the Warden be in this game? Why do all of our heroes have to converge in the same tale and unite against evil together like some corny band of superheroes? He's a Grey Warden and the Blight is ended. His job is done and the dude deserves a break. There were plenty of things I was unhappy about when DA2 rolled around but the fact that my Warden wasn't in it was not one of them.

People are complaining that Hawke doesn't sound like their Hawke so I don't think that's a very compelling reason either. We could have had an option in the keep to choose how we wanted our warden to sound. Either way, the warden could've been a huge part to the story since Corypheus was screwing around with the grey wardens. If the warden is dead, simply don't have you do that wardens stuff. No biggie. I mean they brought characters back to life so lol not a huge deal to them.

It seems to me to be quite a compelling reason to leave the protagonists in their respective games, if you ask me.

In the Forgotten Realms there's a bunch of really powerful heroes like Elminster, Khelben Arunsun, and Drizzt Do'urden. It's kind of a running idea amongst players that the setting is bad because these heroes should be able to solve just about any problem that comes up.

They could just show up in the middle of the campaign, vanguish the bad guy, and save the day.

But they don't. You know why? Because they're not the heroes of the campaign, the players are. The campaign isn't about Elminster, it's about the characters created by the four dudes at the table for this campaign. Trying to be heroic, playing together, and doing some fantastic stuff.

Now imagine if instead of Elminster or Drizzt the DM takes your character sheet from the last campaign and decides to have that guy butt in instead. Stealing all the spotlight from your new character and badly playing your old.

I could barely stand it when my DM's used their original NPCs to show up my character.

If Bioware gave the option to customize Hawke before you meet him then same could have been applied to our Warden. It doesn't matter if they had many voice variations in DA:O, they could have simply gave in two versions of male and female like they did to the Inquisitor.

We considered it.

In the end, there were simply too many variables, too many issues with implementation that would have made the net worth of physically including the Warden problematic for the very people that said inclusion would ostensibly have been for, and, ultimately, we didn't want to.

At this point I would be thrilled if they just did a DLC (so, it's optional. So people can choose to play it or not) where you either partied up with the warden or you become the warden and at the very end kill them off.

I loved my Warden, I write fan-fiction about her and the life she led after the Blight (which is what I prefer, I like the story in my head as opposed to one Bioware would write). But I am growing so sick and tired of these posts going on and on and on and ON about "I want my Warden! *foot stomp*" I'd be willing to have her make the sacrifice just to end this beating of the dead horse.

Also i think The Fact that the Warden has no voice is a huge problem... you would be bound to upset alot of people no matter how you make him/her sound because everyone imagined something different

B-But...he was. Sure, its just a war table mission, but he's in the game. He even writes a dirty letter to Morrigan I think (she said something about the content of it would make even an orlesian blush....so I guess its something dirty).

I think "their voice might not match what you want!" is kind of a weak reasoning from us fans at this point. Bioware wouldn't let that stop them. They'd just.. I don't know, hold a poll or something like that. If they really wanted to include the Warden, they would. I respect that they aren't. I'm happy with how much we can ask about them in DA: I compared to DA2.

They never intended to revisit the warden, which is true.  But it is also a huge problem to write an NPC version of a self insert template.  The range of "types" the warden could be is ginormous.  Hawke basically has 3 dialogue sets.  The HoF could be a blood mage who attacks the chantry and murdered Leilana or   a super righteous paragon fluffy bunny hero.  And lots of things in between.  There's no way you could write dialogue that would make most people say "oh yeah, that's my warden."

Difficult? Lol. Warden or Hawke, what will 60+ percent of the fanbase pick?
