Capital of Orlais. Like many before release, I was looking forward to exploring this place that seemed really interesting.

I am genuinely intrigued as to what happened here...I mean, it is little more than a small courtyard with a few NPCs and stalls. The whole area just seems odd to me. There are like 4 or 5 fast travel points right next to each other for some reason, an upper courtyard with barely anything there, loads of unopenable doors, no interiors, barely any side quests.

So what do we think happened with Val Royeaux? Did they have more content but cut it out? Surely it wasn't always planned like this?...the whole thing just seems really bizarrely designed to me.

PS. Related to a similar issue I have, that I think the game badly needs a big city to explore imo.

Cheers

I think the DA team tried to bite off more than they could handle. That's not necessarily bad, I prefer them being ambitious, but it results in lots of cut content, and sometimes you notice the gap.

I would have traded, happily, two or three of the actual locations (starting with the Hissing Wastes...) for a complete version of Val Royeaux. But I want to, wishfully, think that we just got a taste of it, and that the rest will be shown in an expansion.

I thought Val Royeaux was gonna be a big city environment with richer and poorer quarters, an alienage and the grand cathedral all available to visit, especially since the devs were talking about environments in general being bigger than Kirkwall, so I assumed that would count for the city/cities too. It's a shame, it would've been fun exploring a large city filled with activities and interesting npcs etc.

I have just been there again in my current game and it still baffles me tbh. I can't think of a reason for the fast travel to the higher level other than they simply couldn't be bothered to design a staircase!... You can even jump down in to the main courtyard bit.

Its a small portion of the city... Its as beautiful as I expected an Orlesian Market place to be. Compare it to the Dog lord's marketplace, huge difference.

That said, I also wanted to see more of VR. There was no reason to do so though, so I'm hoping for a DLC. Wicked Hearts was my favorite mission; attending another Orlesian Ball with all the companions post-game would be amazing. Assassination attempt on us / our friends this time, please!

I believe Dragon Age nailed natural environments. The deserts, florests, swamps... they were all beautiful. But when it came to the glory of civilization, it mostly failed. There were some great ruins here and there, and that palace you dance was breathtaking. But where were the cities? Val Royeaux was suppose to be one of the greatest cities in Thedas, yet it didn't feel anything close to it.

And it was not the only moment where the game tells you you are somewhere epic yet you don't see anything like it. In the mission where the Inquisitior army defeats the red templars we are suppose to be in the middle of a major battle, yet all we see is a few tents and some siege equipment. I mean, compare it with the military camps in The Wicher 2 and it becomes embarassing.

By contrast, the Witcher 3 will have Novigrad which is a city with thousands of people in it.

Bioware need to step up their game....

Val Royeaux is by far and away the biggest disappointment for me in Inquisition.  I was expecting something grand, with large areas to explore and many, many of the Orlais-related quests found in the city proper.  Instead, it's like an out of the way hub where you can go shopping for (most useless) loot.

Val Royeaux was supposed to dwarf both Denerim and Kirkwall in terms of sheer size and majesty, yet even Lothering from DA:O was bigger and had more quests associated with it.

Very, very disappointing.

I'm gutted that we didn't get to visit the Grand Cathedral. After all those pieces of concept art from it, and how the Chantry is so opposed to the Inquisition I thought for sure we'd get at least one quest where we'd have to go there to answer for ourselves.

Oh god another witcher fanboy.

Having said that, yes I would've have loved to see more of Val Royeaux, the city streets, the grand cathedral, the white spire, the imperial palace. Maybe in DLC?

There is a lot they could add in a Val Royaux DLC to make show it off. Some suggestions.

New Companion Quests

Most companions I can see easily tying into a section of the city, thus giving us a reason to go there; each area should have say 3 quests to them not counting the companion quests. Here are my ideas.

  • Varic: A noble Quarter similar to High-town, though could easily be something like low town. His quest would be about the merchant's guild and the carta. Dwarven inquistors get extra content here.
  • Cole: The white Spire. This is so important to who cole is, I am actually surprised that we didn't go there for his companion quest.  Human mages would have some extra content here.
  • Sera: The slums. Sera is out for the little people, so why not her quest be something like mark of the assassin, a heist from a noble house to help out the 'little people'
  • Cassandra: Grand Cathedral/seeker HQ; as the companion most tied to the chantry, lel is an advisor not companion, going to the grand cathedral can tie into her quest. Also if she is made divine for her to be crowned her. Human rogues/warriors get some extra content here.
  • Iron Bull: The area, not sure, maybe a lower class region? But the quest would be for him to show off his Ben-hasrath skills, assisting him on a job for either the inquistion and/or the Qun. Qunari would get more content for them.
  • BlackWall: Not quite sure for blackwall.
  • Dorian: University of Val Royauex or the noble quarter of Val Royaux. His quest
  • Viveienne: The imperial Palace, she is the magical advisor to the royal court. Her quest would be about just that, some extra opitions if Gaspard is in charge.
  • Solas: Hard to say, but I say tying him to the alianage is best. Solas does care about the elves, in his own particular way. Plus this might be motivation for him, as the alianage of Val Royauex is supposed to make the Denerim one look like a paradise. extra content for elves here

Showing our Choices

This is probaly one of the more obvious ones, but a good way to show our impact by what people are talking about and things you see. Some random examples.

  • before the civil war ends, you might have to deal with a gang in the slums who are supporters of either side.
  • after it is over, everyone is talking about it. Town criers are shouting about the outcome.
  • Showing some of the war-table missions and effects; for example there are a number of missions to determine alliances and arrangements in Orlais, let people talk about them here.
  • Templars: after Ser Barris is promoted to knight-commander of the templar order, you can find him at the templar hq. He would have a quest or two for you.
  • Mages: first judging fiona(:P) second, perhaps the white spire becomes the hq for the college of enchanters and the leader of the mages can expound on their plans.
  • Seekers: disbanding the seekers might show the seeker hq falling appart or changed to a different building. reformed and kept would show it slightly different.

And of course lots of new quests. :P

so what do others think of these ideas?
