For those of you who've finished the game or have been through most of it, am I going to get my ass handed to me if I don't bother with modifying or crafting my own stuff? Love that it's in there for the people who enjoy it, but it's not for me. I'm at level 12 and have yet to have my party wipe, but I'm sure the difficulty will ramp up at some point. I'll gladly switch to easy if I have to, but I'm curious as to how well looted gear will hold up as the game progresses.

Why is it not for you? It takes no time at all, the gear you get is better plus you can customize it yourself.

Short answer is yes. You can go through it without crafting fairly easily I only do it to see if there's a trophy for it.

I don't enjoy collecting things or spending time in menus putting those things together. I like the idea of crafting, it's in some of my favorite games, but I always end up ignoring it after the first few hours.

You don't HAVE to, but you can definitely make better than you can buy or find, and you really don't have to go to a huge amount of effort. But if you find it boring by all means skip it.

giant pain I know but you can buff up to some ridiculous equipment. And no you don't need to.

Not on normal, no. On Nightmare it is highly recommended, though probably not required.

Some quite powerful unique pieces of equipment can be easily looted - although I was very unlucky in looting good staves. Nothing was able to even come close to the stuff I was able to craft, while I often picked up powerful unique bows or 1/2 handed weapons.

Doing my first playthrough on normal, I'd say yes -- though it's nice to do, not bothering with crafting and upgrading won't be detrimental to your ability to beat the game at all.

Hard / Nightmare might be a different story.  Haven't tried yet.

The only time I check the crafting screen, is when I get new schematics.

95% of the time, the items I'm able to craft are much worse than what I am currently wearing as drops.

The only time I've actually crafted something (save for runestones), is when I accidentally destroyed/sold a piece of armour for one of the characters not in my party at the time.
