Anyone got the da2 reference by varric?
When you speak to him he says
"and despite whatever you ve heard, no. kirkwall is not that bad"
This made me chuckle. Bioware really watches the forums....
personally i loved Da2 (though my first impressions were pretty much terrible)

I think my favorite reference in conversations with Varric so far was that the Orsino thing "Didn't make sense" i lolled pretty hard at that
Yeah, me too
. In general, I loved the conversation with him, when you can ask him about the fate of Hawke's companions.
I felt like it was BioWare's way of saying 'sorry for the half-assed, rushed ending to DA2'.

I get the feeling that sneaky Bioware is inserting all sorts references to our complains in these forums in DAI. I think these forums make their job so much easier ![]()

Yep, including the "fourth ending" for shooting the Star Kid made me laugh...then cry when I had to do that section all over again because it doesn't autosave after you leave Earth! ![]()

Earth never recovered due to the amount of toxic waste.

You must not be too far in. DA2 references are all over the place.
i am not. 21 hours in.
....Can anyone just bask in the awesome that 21 hours is 'not that far in' in this game. If we were playing ME we'd be almost half way through, even a completionist playthrough.

Varric: So, you were all alone in the wilderness?
Blackwall: What are you on about?
Varric: A lone wanderer. What's he looking for? Love? Absolution?
Blackwall: How about you try "a strong arm to kill more Darkspawn"?
Varric: Ah yes, but what does that signifies?
Blackwall: Killing more Darkspawn.
Varric: Ehh... You're just like Sebastian.
That's a new level of insult

I paraphrase here:
Varric: "You remind me of a certain individual"
Blackwall: "What does he look like?"
Varric: "Clothed in all white"
Blackwall: "Was he nice?"
Varric: "Oh yeah, he was sooooo nice..."
Blackwall: "Sounds just like me"
Varric: "Sebastian would have liked you"
Nice name dropping in the last sentence, even though I already suspected Varric was talking about Sebastian ![]()

Didn't he also say he has tried out different genres of writing but can't do romance, I thought that might have been a subtle joke haha.

The first time I talked to Varric I just could see it.
Every single question you came up with was basically a reference to the forums.
Although... The Sebastian comment is strange as my Hawke was set up so she never met him.

I find some comfort in that. Even if we as fans don't agree with every design choice they make in a game they do at least read the forums and the feedback. With the amount of in jokes in the games they really have to be paying attention. The Mass Effect series has tons of them If i recall Blasto was based on a forum joke and so was a reference to Elcor strapping canons to themselves.

I'm loving the little references they have, not just to DA2 but to obscure DAO things too.
Theres a ladder landmark in the Western Approach with the entry "Can I get you a ladder, so you can get off my back!?" etched in the wood, a quote from the "violent" voice in DAO's CC.
The Bard songs (I love them so much, little things like this make games awesome.) are based off DA2 and DAO music. Nightingale's Eyes is based off of Rogue Heart (da2) I think, Empress of Fire is based of the Orlesian theme, and a slowed-down version of I am the one plays during Astrarium puzzles.

I particularly enjoyed Varric saying he's not good at writing romance novels. Or something to that effect.
Also, Solas had a line about, "would you define Varric by his chest hair?"

Is anything in this game not a reference to a previous game?
I hate to say it, but the callbacks are ALMOST overdone.
We get all of the references, I wonder what someone new to the franchise would think about...well...everything.

I loved that moment very much. There's a lot of "on the nose" stuff in relation to DA2. BioWare knows they goofed and have taken it in stride.
