Could have been, but being surrounded by rock tended to make it feel small.

I thought it felt the opposite, actually.  I felt like the Deep Roads were such a long, epic journey into the depths of the Earth.  I know most people hate that part of the game, but oh man I always love the Deep Roads.

Oh i liked it, it just didn't feel as "open" as other areas. It was more like adventuring.

+1 for the deep roads. I somehow forgot about it when listing large areas earlier, but yeah, I really enjoy the deep roads.

Hinterlands, Exalted Plains, Western Desert place and Hissing Wastes are all pretty size-able.  These maps let you pick a direction and wander anywhere (mostly).

Emprise du Lion, Emerald Graves, and Storm Coast are medium sized but still pretty linear in how you progress and unlock the map.  The do have free roaming elements with clear choke points.

Crestwood, Fallow Mire, Forgotten Oasis (the winding mines add vertical height though) are probably the smaller maps.

Storm coast expands a bit later to get some depth but for the most part it's pretty much just a straight shot up and down the coast with a few off beaten paths.  Mire is a one shot linear story with little to explore.  Fun but never want to go back there and step in the water. :P

Hissing Waste is the only place I felt like I needed a mount.  Everywhere else was either condensed enough for me not to bother or convenient fast travel smartly located.

The source of the map sizes is from E3.  The quote is at the beginning of this video:

"This is Crestwood, the largest area we have ever built.  Bigger than Dragon Age 2.  This is far from the biggest area in DA:I"

If you scan the video you can see that it's a map and concept we don't even have in game.  The Crestwood we have has similar themes, but not what's in this video.  We also don't have sprint/walking like they feature, but that video is all pre-alpha footage so whatevs B)

I hate watching old videos like this; often the "promise" is better than the execution. In this case, so many of the open-world choices seem to have been stripped since alpha, turning everything into a linear story with few meaningful consequences. Also of note is how the companions would comment on your choices as you made them, as opposed to seeing their approval or disapproval as a non-contextual and forgettable notification.

The most irritating thing for me was not seeing the approval/disapproval total somewhere on the character sheet.

Hinterlands and Hissing Wastes are massive as are the Exalted Plains.

Videos this old are never accurate of the final product. That's why I never really pay attention to the demos until very close to release.

i think only Ozammar is comparable to the sheer size of DAI. and Ozammar is broken down into many smaller dungeons that u will never get lost in.

DAI is more realistic in this aspect.
