I liked Skyrim, but as others have pointed out, it just failed to make you feel connected and engaged in the story. As such, exploration and the huge, interesting world was nice, but without a story that would really engage me, or companions I'd feel attached to, the game could only keep my interest for a while, and I've had remarkably little urge to replay it, after completing it once, and playing through parts of it with other characters a couple of times.

That, in contrast with Bioware games, which have made me return every now and then to replay an older game, to re-experience the story with a new character.

Dragon age Inquisition has definitely been influenced by Skyrim - there's some of the same feel as when playing Skyrim when you explore large maps. The story saves it from becoming as clinical, and empty feeling as a world though; at least that's what it seems to me thus far. Once they patch it up to fix the tactical view, and improve the UI, it may be a very good game indeed. If they were to do the right thing and bring back PROPER tactics customization for companions, and more than 8 skill quickslots, in addition to fixing the tactical view, it could be a truly great game.

Hated Skyrim with a passion but I like DA:I a lot.. go figure.

As mentioned up thread, I think for a lot of people DA:I feels a bit like a bait and switch, the series up until this point has been low on exploration and big on focused story. Now we have big exploration with a story bolted on, add to that the usual bugs and problems any new release has and it gets peoples back up.

As I said I like it but it is a hell of a gear change.

Skyrim has fantastic lore. If skyrim had dai story impact and these companions it would game of the decade

It has a lot of glitchs but as 4 year old console game it still outshines dai in some ways and with mods even more

People do it with DAO as well. Today, DAO is apparently the epitome of story and characterization and combat tactics and everything. Funny thing, when it came out, the forums were overflowing about how it was dumbed down, console-ized, ugly, etc, etc.

Personally, I prefer enjoying things to whining about them. I've loved all the Dragon Ages and I loved Skyrim. Despite the best efforts of forum dwellers to frown at everything, these types of games keep coming out so hooray!

It's easy to forget the bad parts as long as they don't outnumber the good ones..

I liked Skyrim but the main story sucked. DA:I has some flaws in that the world isn't organic enough but considering it's their first semi-open world game, I'll cut them some slack on that front. I love DA:I and think a lot of the criticism toward it stems from nostalgia of what games were like when most of us were kids.

for the same reason people always complain when a brand new online game breaks and their servers melt for the first few days (or after a big patch) etc, they cry and cry and yell, while the rest of us sit back and laugh or actually wait those few days and THEN try and play... people are stupid.

yet Skyrim was full of bugs and pretty much all the games as huge and complicated like it. How do you troublesome a game that complex with that many choices? Smart and patient people understand the simple fact: the more people playing, the more bugs that will be found. Often that means even obviously ones suddenly come to the front. Even with a few more months cooking games like SKyrim and DAI wouldnt be bug free.

Should games be bug free on launch, yes. Is it ever going to happen in a real world reality, no.

How does one avoid bugs then? dont be so eager to buy a game the moment it comes out, wait a few weeks. Of course if everyone did that then bugs would still exist cos there is noone to find them. thats why a lot of us are way more patient than others. We actually try and help make the game better

People forget a lot of things about older games. If Inquisition had a beginning similar to Baldur's Gate 2 for instance, there would be tons of complaints about having a rather grindy dungeon forced on you at the beginning of the game. For the record, I really like Baldur's Gate 2 and have replayed it perhaps more than any other game, but the Dungeon-Be-Gone mod is a blessing.

Skyrim was actually a very good game.

I'd probably rank DA:I higher, but Skyrim was a very good game.  There was practically unlimited freedom, some of the lore was interesting, I enjoy all things Nordic, and I thoroughly enjoyed being a thief/rogue in the game.

Bioware, though, no matter what people say, has always caught me with their characters.  I can't even begin to tell you how in love I am with people like Miranda, Jack, Grunt, Garrus, Zaeed, Tali, Thane, Joker- even EDI.  They're not flat, they have actual story arcs, and the lines upon lines of dialogue engages me.  I remember I saw Jeck - hated her - but now I actually like her to an extent.

I have yet to finish DA:O and DA2 but I enjoyed the characters of Alisatir, Morrigan, Sten, and Leliana.

I remember when I use to play Mass Effect for a little while and all I did for over an hour was talk to every single person on the Normandy.  No guns, no fighting, no orders given, just talking to characters.  It was my first time or so, didn't really know the characters, and I had the whole squad minus Legion, and I was thoroughly engaged for over an hour just sitting there and talking to them.

Man I really wish I could forget ever playing Mass Effect 2 so I could go back through that game not knowing what to expect.  A true masterpiece in my opinion.

I encountered a lot of bugs in Skyrim. I still loved it because I found it entertaining and fun. I am encountering a lot of bugs in DA:I, I still love it for the same reasons as above. You don't have to tear one genre, system, company or game down because you love another one-- whether it's comparative or not.

If a game comes out with some flaws, but you still enjoy playing it, you get swept into the story and have a blast playing it-- you're more likely going to forget the bad, or at least let the good outweigh it.

Honestly, the way people get so upset over reviews and comments, you'd think their level of like/dislike isn't based on the merit of the game, but rather how the faceless masses view it.

I often see Skyrim getting praised in posts about how bad DA:I is with it's bugs and controls and whatnot.

Seriously, have people forgotten how buggy Skyrim was for many when it was released? How many glitches there where? Big open world; all areas combined in DA:I are very large, at least on the same level as the world area in Skyrim. A main story that quite a few people complained about being a bit dull but hey, side-quests and running around killing enemies in a big open world made up for the lacking main quest and often dull combat.

But all of this people seem to mysteriously have forgotten. I love Skyim, does not mean I'm blind to the problem it had, and still have (I can't exit a building without the game crashing 1 out of 10 times, and glitches that where never fixed). I wonder if people will forget about the problems DA:I now have when the next chapter in The Elder Scrolls get released...

Awww... Your adourable.

Seriously have you not seen the thousands of obligaroty "You like Skyrim, well i don't" threads pop up EVERYWHERE after skyrim was released.

You know just what happens after every single popular release ever. The same thing happened with GTA 5. Tons of pro-threads and lots of anti-threads either.

One of the reason there are more anti-threads than pro-threads about Inqisition is that bioware blew all it's good will on the shitty Dragon Age 2 and the disapointing Mass Effect 3 ending, so there's no more left to overlook bugs and port-issues in Inquisition.
