When I read about the party characters, I immediately put them in categories...rated them as interesting/avoidable,/boring and who I could sacrifice in order to make my perfect party. This had me wondering who I would play, as I didn't want to play a class that had all my 'favourite' characters in, so I wouldn't play with them as I would miss out on them.

Well, I'll list them from when they were announced:

Iron Bull - sounded like you couldn't do well without him, but he was a gruff warrior-type. Thought I'd peel him out when the toughest bits happened.

Blackwall - Kind of cool, as he's a Warden, but couldn't see much else if I was being mean to decide on my dream team. A second warrior if I wasn't playing one, shared with Iron Bull for that slot.

Cassandra - Yep. Cool as hell.

Varric - yep, use him as much as poss. Just a dude; a hairy dude, but still cool.

Sera - Really couldn't imagine how she would be done and not be just annoying, sticking out like a sore thumb..

Cole - Uhm. Turnips?

Vivienne - Evil Mother in Law type stuff. I thought she'd be impossible to get on with and would argue with everyone...not use her much really.

Dorian - kept thinking of Dorian Grey and Freddie Mercury combined. Sounded like it could be a winner there.

Solas - He's a bald elf.

I haven't played past 7 of them yet, so can't list the ones I don't have.

Well. This all changed. It looked like me a mage, which is weird.

NOW

Iron Bull; yes, he's cool. Reminds me of the Gruffalo, and I do like him, far beyond 'big guy, hits things...use when it gets hard'. He's kind of reassuring.

Blackwall - He's probably the most reliable seeming, comforting and solid. You know he won't let you down, and he is kind of like having a sergeant major that's humble and just nice. Or the mysterious uncle that turns up in a film where the main person just lost all of their family, to look after and teach them.

Cassandra - just as cool as I thought, but more vulnerable and complex.

Varric - yep.

Cole - not met, but I am looking forwards to it now.

Vivienne - 'Absolutely Fabulous', and she is wonderful for it, Dahlings.

Dorian - Not met.

Solas - there's just something lovely, comforting and secure about him, and he needs a cuddle. If there's one person I was SO wrong about, it's him. I'd want him there at the end I think. Calm and nice with it, not arrogant. Still bald, but it suits him. Kind eyes too! His voice is beautifully calm and soft. I'd want him as my mentor if I learned magic.

Well. Now everything's turned on it's head. There's no one that isn't so fantastically unique and interesting. I almost wish I could just play all of them and leave me out. There are no massive cliches or predictable peeps. It doesn't really matter what class I play, as I'm going to not play someone based on that, most of the time, so I just have to work out who I want most and be tactical rather than be black and white.

SO, did you have anything similar in mind and see anything change for you? The depth of character and development is far beyond any other game so far. I mean, Zevran, Sten and Morrigan were easy to use very little for me...no conflict for me in that. Not so this.

At first I was going to attempt to use all the companions at least once. Then I met Sera.

I ended up not using all of the companions at least once.

Iron Bull then - Looks like the kind of guy I'd want in my party. Will be cool to have a Qunari who doesn't rigidly follow the Qun.

Iron Bull Now - Surprised by how deep his character is. The chargers are an equally rad bunch. Cool to have a leader under your command.

Blackwall then - Like Bull, will be awesome to have a Warden companion who isn't new to the Order. Wardens are my favorite faction in Thedas. Will probably dig this guy,

Blackwall Now - Wow! Blackwall was a surprise favorite. He's the first I go to talk to when I return to Skyhold and I take him everywhere.

Cassandra then

Cassandra now -

Varric then - He was my right-hand man in DA2. Will be interesting to see how the "real" Varric differs from the one we saw in his telling of the rise of the champion

Varric Now - Still love him. He sits alongside Blackwall as a pretty much permanent party member.

Sera then - The only thing I really saw of her was her walking through that tall grass so my only impression was "Sorry, but Varric is my rogue. GTFO"

Sara Now - I don't like Sera at all. She is the only party member I will never use.

Cole then - Loved him in Asunder. Cannot wait to meet him!

Cole Now - Lives up to his character in the books. Patrick Weeks did an excellent job taking over David Gaider's baby. Too bad he almost never gets to leave Skyhold. Varric is too rad to leave behind.

Vivienne then - We will likely clash because I got no time from Orlesian nonsense, but she seems so

bad ass I'll let her stick around.

Vivienne now - We're getting on alright. I definitely like her as a character, but she is too much of a jerk to my party members for me to bring her along that often. Definitely going to play Knight Enchanter on my mage play-through though!

Dorian then - Sarcastic wit? Amazing mustache? A non douchey mage from Tevinter? Necromancer?! Will likely be my favorite mage.

Dorian now - Pretty much spot on. I love Dorian.

Solas then - Very knowledgeable about the fade but doesn't really interact with people apparently? Please don't be socially awkward Merril 2.0 or a dick who doesn't understand how to function around people.

Solas now - I absolutely love Solas. The hardest choice at the party select screen is deciding if Dorian or Solas is coming along.

My typical party is Dwarf Two-Hander/Blackwall/Varric with a rotation of Cassandra/Dorian/Solas/Iron Bull. I only really bring the other party members when I think a quest will pertain to them.

I expected Vivienne to really get on my nerves.  She sounded shallow and prissy.  Now I actually like her.  She's more like regal and confident.

Also, I'm extremely pleased that nobody in this game appears to be a fanatic.  I had enough of that in DA2. Everybody I have encountered yet understands the big picture and can shelve their pet agendas for it to some degree.  Except Sera I suppose.  I don't really like her thus far.  She seems rather small and selfish.  There has to be more to her than that.

I thought I would hate Cassandra, or at least dislike her strongly. I was going to romance Josephine because I thought the ambassador types would be better for me than the head of the religious secret police, but Cassandra's journey is so cool my human mage couldn't resist.

First thoughts.

Bull: Ah the Qunari. I wonder who savaged your face.

Blackwall: Beardwall. Mr vanilla shake.

Cassandra: Ah yes the seeker from DA2. Seems to like stories.

Varric: Up for another romp through Thedas pardner?

Sera: Ah the humorous/ sarcastic elf of the group.

Cole: A spirit from one of the books?

Vivienne: Our funny hat status quo.

Dorian: Sharpy mustache.

Solas: His head is shiny.

Current thoughts:

Bull: Cares about the folks under him. Much less talk with him than I thought.

Blackwall: Won the romance roulette. Seems depressed about it.

Cassandra: She disapproves. A lot.

Varric: Ole buddy ole pal.

Sera: Someone took too much of your brain out with an ice cream scoop. I don't understand you at all.

Cole: Adorable. Innocent. The kid.

Vivienne: We are not going to see eye to eye on a lot of things. But I do agree with a lot she has to say. I'd just rather have a more tempered reaction and less public.

Dorian: I do love sarcasm. And I do think Dorian is fun.

Solas: I dunno. I really dunno. Oh and his head is still REALLY shiny. Oh and he's basically the party secondary mage anyway because I don't feel like gearing Dorian up and Vivienne's a bit of a douche.

PW and the va made me love something I used to hate, Cole.

Also, I was mad BW brought Varric again but now all is forgiven and I'm using him a lot. Which sucks, because I already love Solas + him to pieces and will probably continue to bring them everywhere on all my playthroughs

I thought I wouldn't like Dorian or Cole, but changed my mind after I met them. Especially Dorian, he became my main mage companion after I talked to him for a bit, he's cool guy.

Cole's the Inadvertent Psychotherapist. He makes for some great banter, even though he kinda sucks as a rogue. Kid ought to be a mage, I mean he can friggin bilocate.

My two biggest surprises were Bull and Sera. I came into the game ambivalent about both. Now, I think Bull is awesome and I loathe Sera. The only reason I haven't kicked her out/put her down is because I like to finish at least my first playthrough with everyone intact. Judging from our conversations, however, she's definitely on the "you can't fire me, I quit!" Line. We do not get along.

I agree to the extent that her introduction is extremely off-putting. I mean

Spoiler
But she has grown on me some through conversation. I wouldn't sleep with her at my back but I can eventually get to a point where I understand her.

In some respects. Sera's still the "so random XD" type she appeared to be and irritating as all get out. On the bench she goes.

Cassandra then- I can't stand this woman. She seems like a big alpha bully who needs to be set straight.

Cassandra now- She's awesome. Though she really needs to take it easy on Varric (thankfully, he dishes it back at her. Indirectly). <_<

Iron Bull then- I'm going to like him I just know it.

Iron Bull now- Gentle giant/big softie  . Nice to know he's not just some amoral mercenary.

Blackwall then- Boring.

Blackwall now- Heck of a tank, but kind of a jerk at times.Still not my favorite.

Varric then is pretty much Varric now. He's Varric.

Dorian then- Handsome. Upon first meeting him and at times he comes off as an extremely arrogant, conceited snob.

Dorian now- Still needs to tone down the narcissism, but at least he proves to be a rewarding friend and good at heart. Has a pretty personal quest that rung close to home IRL.

Vivienne then- OMG I love her I love her

Vivienne now- Hype slightly down. Quite a badass with that spec though.

Sera then- Seems like she could be fun.

Sera now- The way she talks is irritating, but actually well written since she's someone without any upbringing or manners. Kind of annoyed with her anti-elf attitude though.

Solas then- Looks reasonable.

Solas now- Not as vivacious or engaging but still likable.

Cole then- Ugh waste of a slot <_<

Cole now- Interesting character arc but his half-undead look really creeps me out. His face is unnerving.

I was annoyed by Sera when I met her, but finding out more about her as the story goes on (though admittedly I'm not very far through it) has helped me understand her better and appreciate what she brings to the table. Similarly, seeing Cassandra transform from the hard-assed seeker to the (firm-assed ^_^) human being with a beating heart has been rewarding.

I deliberately avoided previews for this game so I didn't get preconceptions about the characters, a decision I so far feel good about. Blackwall is my current favourite. What a cool bloke!

Bull: fugly, most likely to be the dude bro buddy type

Bull: fugly but with a good heart, is a dude bro buddy type, but I feel for him.

Blackwall: white Knight type, older handsome man I want to romance

Blackwall: Older wise man, annoys me, will not romance, makes an awesome tank though, not THAT bad.

Cassandra: chantry devotee...okay hopefully not the case, my best chance at a romance

Cassandra: Chantry devotee, will not romance, stop dying you're supposed to be a tank, okay Blackwall will replace you now

Varric: Not my buddy, hopefully they'll do more with him

Varric: Wow they actually did, good. I like him

Sera: Neutral

Sera: Aww ain't she sweet...okay get out of my inquisition...damn you bard in the tavern...okay she can stay. Sort of fun

Cole: Will kill on sight

Cole: Not bad, annoys me, will not take along.

Vivienne: She and I will get along

Vivienne: Called it!

Dorian: I will hold him down and shave that off! Oh great another flamboyant mage.

Dorian: Wow, I actually like him. Is romancing... I won't change you, my beautiful Gomez Adams!

Solas: Neutral, fugly

Solas: I want him to die.

I didn't watch the companion videos to avoid spoilers so I was mostly going on visuals and a few glimpses. I expected to love Vivienne but she and I haven't been seeing eye to eye at all. I expected The Iron Bull to be Sten 2.0 so I'm clearly pleasantly surprised by him. Vole's appropriately creepy, so far, but I haven't taken him anywhere yet so I'm only going by his narration at Skyhold. That hat clipping all over the place drive me nuts, though. Solas I love, though some of his comments about his friends worry me and Dorian I'm enjoying even more than his mustache suggested I would. I didn't know what to expect from Sera and I still don't! Blackwall and Sera had a really interesting banter that very much changed my preconceptions of him.

Sera - didn't even allow the annoying bint to join up.  One of the worst characters ever invented in the history of gaming, and incredibly bad voice acting.

For the most part, at least so far, they're who I thought they would be.  But I ended up liking Solas even more than I thought I would, which makes me nervous...  He's also turned into the DA:I edition of "companion I take everywhere", which meant I actually did a section with three mages and a warrior.  At least I know it's possible now. :P  (Naturally that section had the most locked doors so far in the game...mysteries for another time.)

I'm the opposite with Vivienne; I expected to like her quite a bit, but I really can't stand her.  The "My dear" this and "my dear" that drives me nuts (it's so condescending).

I expected to DISLIKE Cassandra, and I actually like her quite a bit.

I figured I'd like Dorian; I love him to bits.

I thought I'd be OK with Sera; cannot stand her.  I dislike crazy characters.

Cole intrigued me pre-release; I find him annoying as hell.  Mostly, I'll admit, because of the damned hat.  If I could remove that stupid hat...

I initially quite liked Sera, even through the introduction and all that. Her quirkiness amused me. However we've recently had a falling out over a particular event (won't post spoilers), so I don't think we're on good terms now. It remains to be seen how it goes through the rest of my playthrough, as I've still got a long way to go.

Also I didn't expect to find Cole as likeable as I do, and I admit I wasn't a big fan of Iron Bull pre-release but he's won me over. I'm still not sure about Solas - he's nice enough but I find some of his views on demons troubling in terms of how things may play out in the game.

Bull: I thought he'd be like Oghren, but less immature. I found he is pretty laid-back so far... Then again, I'm not that far into the game (Wicked Hearts, Wicked Eyes)

Blackwall: Everything I thought... But he swears, and doesn't have an air of nobility/dignity about him, which I thought he would have, like Wynne had.

Cassandra: I like her more than I thought; Harsh exterior, with real thoughts and emotions too. And some hilarious awkward 50 Shades of Thedas books xD

Cole: I knew he'd be creepy. But... he is really creepy. I'm feeling less friendly to him, because I don't trust him. During Asunder, I thought he needed help... but he really isn't normal, is he?

Sera: Speaking of not normal... Chill out Sera. Chill out. I veer between "Shes funny. I like her." to "Shut up, you're annoying and your black and white view of the world doesn't help me now."

Varric: Still a bro.

Solas: I thought he'd be more shy, guess not. He is also more pro-mage than I thought... We're acting really passive aggressive to eachother and I don't know why, I try being nice to him.

Dorian: Also got into a fight with him, and just like Sera "**** this guy is awesome, so much confidence" and then "STFU already, you're not THAT great." but like Sera, most of the time he's cool.

Vivienne: I love her. She is freaking majestic.

I heart sera. She's my beau.

I thought I'd hate her but now I know enough about what happened to her it's kind of sweet and sad. We look out for each other.

Solas and I fight too much. My elf inquisitor has different views on Elven tradition.

I avoided any potential spoilers like the plague, so besides names and faces, I knew pretty much nothing about the companions. I'm liking them all a lot so far. A couple of encounters stand out over others.

Sera surprised me, I laughed pretty much through the entire introduction. Iron Bull was surprising too. Didn't expect him to be as deep as he is. He's great.

And Vivienne is just amazing. When I saw her for the time I'm pretty sure my jaw dropped... But Dorian has fast become my favourite companion. Just love him!
