What happens if you chose the Varruc and Hawke are not friends in the Keep?

(rumours) I've heard he doesn't get as upset if you let Hawke die in the Fade and won't leave the inquisition even if you have low approval with him prior to the mission since he won't care that much. Not 100% sure though.
My next playthrough has them as not friends so I'll figure it out then.
