You saw my Necromancer build earlier. Should I drop Horror from it ? But you have to pick Horror ! Ugh...Why is the first skill for Necromancer and Rift Mage somewhat lousy ? The first skill for Knight Enchanter on the other hand is godly.

I would keep horror if you dont plan on taking either flash fire or wall of fire. But with any one of those, I would skip horror personally. Like I said the problem is the high mana cost + long cast delay. I saw your build but I cant judge it! Because I would need to know your party composition for that :) What skills you have should be a piece of the whole (party).

The only skill I consider obligatory for a mage is fade step in winter.

Lol ! I have made many builds and the only one that truly satisfies me and has Fade Step is the Knight Enchanter....

The Knight Enchanter might be a boring specialization but it sure is an effective specialization...

Ishten: Energy barrage upgrade is really good with flashpoint. It looks bad, -2 resist per projectile but look:

12 x 2 = 24%
Your energy barrage will lower the elemental resist of your staffs element by this amount.
With flashpoint proc for double energy barrage, your next energy barrage does 24% additional damage per projectile.

Energy barrage cost 50 mana, that means with flashpoint you can dual-cast energy barrage.
Lyrium potion upgraded gives +60 magic, which is +30% damage increase.
If you use lyrium potion then dual energy barrage flashpoint combo /w the energy barrage upgrade, the damage increase is very high.

Dont be mislead by energy barrage's seemingly bad upgrade, its better than it looks :)

Edit: Add in conductive current and necro +20% damage for a timed burst and strong mobs become dead mobs.

Yeah,I know that Fade Step is in Winter but only in Knight Enchanters have I found having Fade Step is necessary and does not eat up too much skill points.

What difficulty do you play on?

On nightmare fade step is important (In my opinion) to:

1) Get away from terror demons
2) Ninja disrupt rifts
3) Lower travel time while exploring
4) Dodging dangerous projectiles
5) Close in on dragons that uses wind wings (that pull you in and does damage to ranged characters)

6) Escape combat
7) Resurrect dead party members far away
8) Avoid giant boulders
9) Avoid other dangerous AOE ground effects and spells (like wraith ice mine)

I usually let my warrior tank go first or start attacking with my mage staff from a very far range. The mage auto attack in this game is insanely far.

I play on Hard.

I've found fade step to be absolutely essential against terror demons on Nightmare, at least early on.
