Not sure if this is the right place to post a bug, but here it is anyway.

I just tried using the Tactician's Renewal amulet yesterday to respec and the game kept freezing/crashing shortly after using it.  Here is what was happening.

Playing on Xbox One

My character is a human female mage.

I am level 13 with 15 ability points, Storm - 7, Inferno - 4, Winter - 1, Knight Enchanter - 3.

I was in the undercroft at Skyhold and purchased the Tactician's Renewal amulet.

Opened the menu and went to the inventory > Accessories and used the amulet.

Went straight to the Character Record > Abilities without closing the menu, and started assigning my ability points.

I kept the same abilities basically, i just wanted to shift one point from Winter to Knight Enchanter.

I then moved straight to the Tactics screen and reassigned my controller bindings for the abilities.

Once that was all done, I closed out of the menu completely, and the game froze/crashed a few seconds after that.

I tried this multiple times and it kept freezing/crashing.  I eventually had to use the amulet, save, back out and then reopen the menu, assign one tree of abilities, save, back out and then reopen the menu, and repeat with the remaining trees before it worked without crashing.

Here are the exact abilities, in case they matter:

Storm:

Chain Lightning, Energy Barrage, Energy Bombardment, Stormbringer, Conductive Current, Gathering Storm, Static Charge.

Inferno:

Immolate, Wildfire, Flashpoint, Clean Burn.

Winter:

Fade Step

Knight Enchanter:

Spirit Blade, Combat Clarity, Fade Shield

When i respec'd, i swapped Fade Step for Knight-Protector.

Anyway, I was eventually able to get it done, but I wanted to report it anyway.  Hope it helps.  Let me know if any more info is needed.

It's definitely Immolate for me, I went through and put two skill points at a time and exited the menu. Leaving Immolate as the last point - I added it and when I left the menu, twas crashed.

Give it a shot, I am curious to see if it truly is the problem.

I honestly don't know what to do, I can only hope there is a patch soon, as this is a major skill for Knight Enchanters - in my opinion of course.

Im not sure if it is just immolate, because I was able to finally respec if I just did one tree at a time, even with immolate. I also got the freeze once after respeccing Cassandra.

I am definitely curious to figure out what it is, but I dont really want to keep freezing my game.  Seen too many posts of people getting corrupted saves after crashes.

Having the same problem.

Playing on PC as Qunari mage, I have to assign all my ability points then close the menu, quicksave, and exit game or it will freeze.

Yep. I too was going to report this. Seems like many are experiencing this. I am on Xbox One as well.

Devs, replicate by going to undercroft, stand by the buy & sell banner.

Buy the tacticians renewal, respec whomever you wanted to respec, after, just go directly into inventory and start messing around with your party's armor, accessories, weapons, replacing with better gear if possible.

After awhile of tinkering around within inventory or character record menu, game just automatically shuts off. Kicks you out to xbox one dash board.

I can confirm this as well (Human Knight-Enchanter) on Xbox 360. Happened at least three times in a row.

Mine was crashing too, so I destroyed the one gold amulet and bought one of the three hundred gold amulets and haven't had any crashes since then. I hope this helps you folks.

The re-spec does not populate the new values correctly. You going straight from menu to another menu seems to prove that.

Basically it's a program bug.

On a pc, Mage human, lvl 11.

Same issue here weeks after release................................................................!!! <-- wtf?

Not a single response so far as i can see and not a solution in sight other then try outs...

yes, this is an error made by poor programming.

And this is what can be done to get around it.

- When respeccing your characters dont spend all points at once.

- do not switch trees when respecing multiple points

- do one skilltree at a time, apply points then escape back to the game, hence and repeat without doing multiple tree entrys at once.

This should avoid the issue.

I have a human mage level 15 and trying to use the amulet and same thing happens to me.  As soon as I am done adding all the points the game freezes up my xbox to the point where it wont let me do anything so I have to turn off my xbox and start it up again.  I am playing on the 360.

I just encountered this problem as well, on PC with a Qunari mage.  I tried respecing one skill tree at a time, but the game still froze once I closed out of the fire tree.  So the next time, I did the fire and ice trees together, but left Immolate off.  Saved again, left the undercroft, and then added Immolate once I was back in the throne room.  That time it didn't freeze.  Hope that works for someone else as well.

Bump, I'm on pc and it's the same. Tried to respec my inquisitor 5 times, in all cases my game immediately froze, clearly they just don't want us to respec.

Add another one to this bug report.  Elf Mage level 18 PC version.  Equipping renewal amulet, then reassigning talents and immediately saving without exiting the menu system (then restarting the game) seems to be the workaround for the moment.   Problem being as I don't feel the need to respec abilities that often (usually for a dragon hunt) it's easy to forget to save, and you've spent a bit of time mulling over the abilities of your 4 intended companions .  Then the game freezes and you have to do it all over again.

Find an alternative solution. It was the 1 gold tactical renewal that's caused the freeze. If you are using it after Haven is destroyed then it will cause a bug freeze. I suggest if you are already at Skyhold, use the 345 gold one and use it tree per tree. Hope Bioware will create a fix for this problem in the future.

I destroyed the 1g amulet and got the 345g amulet in hopes that I would not crash immediately after leaving the character screen. No avail.

Please tell me there's a workaround for this horrible bug.

I've tried every suggestion above with my lvl 16 elf mage female while trying to respec for Rift Mage. I even tried saving after using the amulet, which worked fine, but as soon as I respected the lightning tree I exited and saved and it still crashed in saving. Using XBOX 360.

I did eventually get it to work though. My steps.

1. I destroyed the 1 gold renewal, bought a new 345 gold one.

2. Used the renewal, then saved and exited to main menu.

3. Loaded my save, and assigned ALL of my abilities EXCEPT IMMOLATION.

4. Saved without exiting the Menu first.

5. Went back in to Character Record, assigned my last 2 points to Immolation.

6. Saved again without exiting the menu. No lock up!

I don't know if everything I did was needed, but that's what I did, and it worked. Hope it helps!

On a side note here, I can't believe this major bug still exist this far after the game's release. Does BIOWARE even monitor the forum?

I also had this problem on PC. It seems to be triggered on save (even autosave) after a full respec.

My workaround was almost the same as others have suggested - respec one tree at a time and save between each tree. But in my case I found that if I had more than 2 unspent skill points when I did the final respec it still crashed when I hit zero points. Go figure.

I'm playing on Xbone, and have respec'ed level 20+ characters without freezing.

Are you clicking A, A, A, A, A... and finalizing 20+ skills all at once? I think that's the issue. For some reason the game can't finalize too many skills at once.

I always click, A and then finalize with Y for just ONE skill. Then, I move onto the next skill click A, and finalize with Y. Basically, I do each skill individually. I can switch between skill trees fine. Maybe this method is tedious, but it works.
