Sera, the most annoying companion in any Bioware game I've played. Absolute garbage character. Initially recruited her, then after about 5 minutes later I loaded up a previous game pre-Sera and haven't bothered to recruit her again.

I think everyone are well written and all.

With that said, i don't hate Sera, i just really, really, really don't like her.

It depends on what you mean by "hate."  I don't like Vivienne's personality but I think she's a great character and superbly written and acted.  I think Sera is poorly realized and sort of embarrassingly out of place, like a fly in the punch bowl.  I don't think I'll be recruiting her on my next time through.

Blackwall is fine but I keep forgetting he exists.

I'm gonna weigh in here, and my criteria will be based on two things:

  • Did I dislike the character personality and their banter/dialogues?
  • How often did I leave them behind and neglect to take them with me on missions.

Cole:

I disliked this character immensely.  He reminded me of Elmo from Sesame Street, whom I also detest.  The fake child-like innocence schtick just pissed me off.  He was, as we in the tabletop roleplaying community refer to, a shallow crayon-eater persona.  We see these a LOT in LARPs where someone thinks if they grab a plush toy, a blankie, and talk like an immature child or do 'weird stuff', that they are 'roleplaying'.  There's no real sense of original character there.

I took Cole out for a spin three times.  Once upon recruitment, and twice more after unlocking his Assassin specialization.  All three times he sucked rubber balls and ended up wasting my healing potions and repeatedly dying in battle.   He's just not very good and contributes nothing to the party composition that a mage or archer cannot do better.

Iron Bull:

I really really really wanted to like this character.  But amongst my complaints about him is that he's too slow to progress in character interaction.  Gaining any approval with him is a chore, and I'm halfway through the game and still haven't gotten his personal quest.  The only personal moments we've had is him taking me out in disguise to see the troops.  I'd be willing to invest more time in him, if it weren't for the fact that he's also got one of the most boring faces of the companions in the game.  Everyone else has facial expressions.  Bull just looks mehn.  His expression never changes.  He's the Bella Swan of Dragon Age.

Mechanically, Bull sucks too.  I used to try bringing him along as extra DPS both before and after unlocking his specs.  He just sucks.  He dies ALL the time.  Even rebuilding him to generate some guard while focusing on critical chances and Reaver damage didn't result in any tangible change.  He's just too weak.  I've stopped bringing him out.  I won't lie, I'm more disappointed in his lack of performance as a companion than in his roleplaying potential.  But the former was just too much of an albatross around my neck for me to really care about the latter.

Vivienne:

I was enthused to meet Viv and I really wanted to bond with her, as I am playing a mage on my first play-thru.  Wow.  Major beeyotch.  Condescending, Uncle Tom, really shallow, and just plain unengaging.  Plus even on the Ultra settings, her persistently exposed cleavage kept looking like glossy plastic in every cut scene.  I felt like it was an apt graphical display of how much of a plastic character she was.

I make it a point to always leave Viv behind on everything except Dragon missions.  I always keep her gear top-of-the-line, and bring her out because as a KE, she and Blackwell do all the heavy lifting and I can focus on compensating for the terrible camera and AI.  She's mechanically efficient and highly desirable as a power-character.  My main dislike of her stems from her interactions and dialogue.  She's just not the type of character I want around.

Well I really do not hate Sera but I sure hate her transphobic remarks.

I would be a lot more ok with the character overall if that did not had happened. Sera had potential actually but the way she was written just come off as having too many problematic things going on, like kicking her out whatever I wanted and so on... which is kinda sad because I got a bad vibe from her design and maybe I though that I was judging the character too quickly, well guess not.

Solas/Sera... probably Sera more towards the end, but Solas got on my nerves early on. He was extremely unstable to me. I didn't know what I was going to get from him, which turned me off. Kinda like the Friendship/Rivalry scale in DA2.

Sera I just didn't like because she kept insulting elven gods, and I didn't have time for that.

EDIT:

I also ADORE Vivienne. I think she's amazing and don't really get the hate. Even when I saved the mages she was nothing but kind to me... I can't remember what part I actually got pissed at her (I don't remember what she said, but one of the options was basically "mind your business") but everything else, even when she was disagreeing with me, I still felt she supported me.

I thought she could've been a lot bitchier, if anything. I loved watching her and Dorian take shots at Blackwall. The best.

Sera. Just everything about her is annoying, from the way she talks to her motives it just wants me to kick her out. Which I'll probably do in my next playthrough...

If Sera didn't exist, it would be Cole. I don't HATE him, he's just this overly weird and totally-not-complex complex character. Why is he so special? Why is he so different from Justice in Awakening? Are spirits always this stupid when it comes to our world? >_>

Edit: And the Dorian hate makes me a sad, sad panda... :(

I would like to amend my earlier statement. After playing more, I have realised that I can't stand Blackwall.

The reason why many hate Sera is because she is a psychopath. She is a creature that lacks and is incapable of empathy.

The reason why many hate Vivienne is the same reason many people hate politicians.

Sera by far. Before the game released I thought her and my elf would be bros. But she dislike her own people, especially if you're playing an "elfy elf" she really hates you. So much disapproval from her, I'm surprised she stayed with me. It's so funny how things turn out when you actually see the character's personalities fully realized. I thought I would dislike Cullen, but he was pretty cool; and Solas ended up being my number one bro instead.

I appreciate all the characters, but my Dalish Inquisitor and Viv did not get along. Especially after I completed her loyalty quest but refused to give her the heart. I admit I did it just to p*ss her off... *grins* (She reminds me too much of my cliche of a stepmother.) :P

YES! The the least favorite character thread! Just remember it's not a bioware game without companions you don't like and can rip on, that's the fun part. I'd say my least favorites were dorian and sera.

I cringed at sera's recruitment mission and watching her romance scene, i thought at the beginning"Hey, she's so obnoxious that her character development has to skyrocket, give her a chance." Her personal mission proved me wrong.

Dorian is just what I expected, he's not as funny or attractive as he thinks he is, and his personal quest made me cringe(although the quest was hardly his fault). I thought it was kind've damaging to gay acceptance, in fact. The frozen cut scene glitch brought a smile on my face when I told him he should talk less.

Anyway I admit they had some of the best voice acting in the game though, and dorian's personal quest was well written despite my opinions on it

I liked all of the companions a lot. Although I don't always agree with Vivienne, I see where she's coming from and respect her a lot. She and my first Inquisitor got along and considered each other friends, even when she disapproved of some of my choices. She's even one of my favorite characters.

I also romanced Sera during my first play-through, and I like her, but I also agree with people who dislike her. A lot of her close-minded remarks were very off-putting. Especially the transphobic one. If I had to say I disliked anyone, it'd be her...but I still like her. She seems to say outrageous things just to get a reaction out of people. Which, given her history, psychologically makes sense.

I never got super close to Blackwall, but I still liked him. I let him have his freedom after his personal quest, and strongly believe that he is Blackwall at this point, and not his past self. I'm replaying the game right now, and I'm hoping to get closer to him this time.

I didn't give it to her either because I was too untrusting (in this post-Anders world I live in). Specifically I told her I'd give it to her after she said why she needed it, but she declined. Then when the quest didn't go any further, I went back and gave it to her anyway so I could see what would happen. In retrospect, it makes her seem really petty that she wouldn't take the heart JUST because I wanted to know what she was doing with it.

I kinda stick to Cassandra/Sera/Dorian and Blackwall for my party options. Though, my first playthrough I dragged Solas along for almost everything, purely for his knowledge on  . . .everything? Now that I've pretty much heard all he has to say, I can toss him aside and start the fun adventure playthrough.

I like Sera's banter when it's not immature and dismissive, but there are times where I wish there was a punch option. Her cutscenes are her redeeming quality.

Vivienne comes across as a stuck up b**** but I drag myself to her for the quests and conversations only because I don't want her to become divine this time around . . . rushed the main story for my first playthough (oops).

Talking to Cole and Iron Bull is a chore. Cole is a little dramatic for my tastes and Iron Bull . . I've never really liked Bioware's Bromancy characters eg Vega and Varus from Mass Effect.

Varric is also a chore to talk to. I'd rather have scout Harding as a companion.

Josephine is a snorefest. Unfortunately she's trapped my poor lady Trevelyan in a romance with her, there's no break up option after the dramatic duel in Val Royeaux.

If I've missed anyone out then I probably don't like them either.

Totally agree with Sera, except I never romanced her. I was really hoping that her bratty-ness would end as the game went on, but no. She's just as stupid from start to finish.

Dorian, though.. His personal quest, imo, showed a glimpse of what it's like TO BE gay and have your own father reach into the darkest depths to change you, not considering the son's own personal feelings nor the reprecusisons of his actions. So I strongly disagree with that part.

Sera simply because no matter what she says, the only one she actually cares about is her.  She claims to be for the 'little people' and yet her definition of 'little people' is so small and specific that it is all but impossible for anyone to actually be one. Honestly the only reason I keep her around is because I can't bring myself to kick her out.
