Dorian, twas the typical Gaider interpretation of wit and humour that just falls flat with every line, and nearly every line was some sort of failed witticism

Not sure what you are getting at? Something about the patriarchy and their quest to objectify and oppress women?

I wasn't really getting at anything, but obviously more people here dislike the female characters than male characters, even though my superficial understanding was that the female characters were generally cooler than the male ones.

So yeah, it seems odd. If nothing else it suggests that Bioware failed to create compelling female characters for a lot of people, in fact, someone suggested that they knew that least one female character would be disliked and made accommodations specifically to have her out of the way quickly, where no such expectations were had of the male characters, even though I'm sure I would of liked to have thrown Dorian out the nano-second he showed up.

On the other hand it just suggests that there is an irrational dislike not founded on any substantial basis, it would have to be one or the other unfortunately.

From my perspective, it's puzzling, but obviously just because I see the characters differently. Maybe they'll have more success next time (if there is a next time)

I dont dislike any of the characters, actually. This isthe first game where i actually lime everyone. Viv is a giant B but sera even calls her one which i thought was funny. As for sera... i think shes weird but hilarious. My only beef with her is that every conversation i have with her i end up pissing her off. Sera is by far the most difficult character for me to get along with. At this point, im just trying to keep our relationship lukewarm.

Sera. Whiny, childish, disapproves of anything not dickish towards everyone and everything.

Sera is just...crazy.

And I mean the bad sort of crazy. Like MENTAL. She should be locked in an asylum ASAP.

Idk what the producers were thinking when they wrote her. She even fails as being the stereotype of a street wise person.  :?

I thought of romancing her with a lesbian Inquisitor in my, what, third playthrough, perhaps? And when I finally got the game and met her, I was like...Jesus, WTF. They completely screwed the char's mannerisms. When she speaks, there's absolutely NO LOGIC to her arguments. It's not like "Oh, she's so cool because she's a sort of criminal, uses gang language, has a hint of danger about her and knows secret stuff, I have to make an effort to keep up with her." No, it's just: ""What. The woman sounds as though she talks a lot to herself or have abused drugs too much. She's crazy and possibly dangerous."

And what's with the marxist/communist brainwashing ideology permeating her speech? The big people up there versus the little people down here (thus the whole RED colour being shoved right into the player's face)? Why not just make her a clever character WITHOUT the need for ideological indoctrination? She'd be a lot cooler if she simply fought for the little people's interests, without the political crap. It was unnecessary.

Welfare state is also a political proposal and one that works BETTER than communism, as History shows. And yet, we don't see that being advertised in the gaming industry, do we? No, it's just communism or socialism that are morally right and thus shall "save the world from the oppressors". The whole idiotic notion of pitting classes against each other -and therefore increasing social schism- instead of eliminating those forces from society who are a threat to the NATION, like corruption, for instance, persists in the media.

And then, we have things like Sera. Too bad she sounds crazy instead of witty.

Or not.

This is ridiculous. Them expecting not everyone to have one solid opinion on a character should be attributed to all characters. The fact that they just happened to say one of them was love/hate and the fact that they just happened to be female has absolutely no relevance. Were it a male character no one would even be questioning it or thinking about it, and they shouldn't because gender has no relation whatsoever. The fact that certain people disliked 2 female characters slightly more often also has no relevance with gender at all.

Many people disliked Dorian and Cole as well. Should I attribute it to blatant sexism against men or the fact that BioWare must hate men to write such (subjectively) inferior companions? No, because gender has no relevance. Attempting to bring some kind of feminist debate into a topic that has no relation to it and which would do better off without it doesn't help anyone. Of course, I would love to hear your personal opinion on the companions if you're willing to share as I came to this thread looking to see what other people thought of them.

I despised, and continue to despise, Sera. She's way, way too much of a try-hard "funny/random" character and her actual motivation for joining the Inquisition is... did she even have one?

yes, she has a motivation.  She's already an activist. That what the Red Jennies are.  She wants to be part of the Inquisition because she wants to restore order and make the world normal again.  She doesn't like or trust magic and right now its running rampant.  She is willing to help the inquisition as long as it proves not to be the kind of organization that treats commoners like crap.  Also, she is religious in an uneducated sort of way and is going seriously "WTF" with the whole Idea of Andraste sending a herald. If you turn out to be a stuck up ass, she'll really not be friends with you.

Edit: And I have no idea where that other guy got communism from.  She's absolutely not a communist.  She wants the nobles to stop treating peasants like disposable possessions.  At no point does she talk about getting rid of the nobility or creating a new society.

You are right, if it were  male character no one would be questioning it or thinking about it. It's only because there seemed to be a supposition (generated by BW/DA) that DA has stronger or more compelling female characters than your typical game that this counter-balancing force of apparent hatred for their female characters (I guess sans Cassandra) caused my generalized inquiry. I don't care beyond that point, which means I don't really care about the genders any more than you do, fundamentally.

If that hadn't happened, I doubt I would of cared enough to post at all. Also I don't think it's appropriate for me to weight the characters generally given my fairly limited understanding. The ones that came off as "ew" were Blackwall/Iron Bull/Varric/Vivienne/Dorian, mostly because they all came across as stiffs. Faintly clever, or good with accounting, or something, but lacking of heart and fiery human essence. In contrast to Sera who seemed to have that in abundance, but not necessarily so much as to eradicate all sense or posterity. Cassandra seemed to split the difference. Just my basic reading.

Edit: Oh, sort of like

You don't even need to be stuck up though, I ran a diplomatic Lavellan who occasionally had a snarky bent and the two of them got along like a house on fire. I get why people like Sera and I personally will praise her inclusion till the cows come home, but for that Lavellan and myself I just could not stand a single thing she did and the feeling was mutual in spite of how many times my character tried to reach out. They only got along towards the end of the game and even then it was far more from my Lavellan learning she should just let Sera have her way to placate her, rather than any actual growth on both of their parts.

Also could we please not bring gender politics into this? It's not going to end well and we all know it.

I actually don't hate any of the characters, though I generally don't. Vivienne and Sera appear to be getting a lot of heat. Vivienne is Vivienne, and I respect her for that. Sometimes she just has this way of making me feel chastised during conversations when I say something based on my own sentimentality and it's awesome because I have to step back and consider her points. At one point I also saw her warmer side. During the first conversation with her in Skyhold I chose the sad icon and said I failed the people in Haven. I gained approval with her and she disagreed in this tone that came off as 'why would you even thing that?' I do have to take Sera in small doses since she has this annoying younger sister vibe, but I respect her ideals about protecting the 'little people'. After the whole affair at Winter Palace she reminded me who really suffered due to Gaspard, Celene, and Briala. I kind of feel like her role in the group is to keep the Inquisitor grounded. Also

Spoiler

She's so graceful and all that from pictures and videos, but I found the truth in game.

Sera's an annoying hypocrite, Vivienne is actively ignoring the reality many mages faced simply because *she* was lucky enough to have a good life, and Blackwall is bland. The rest of the cast are good, imo.

Vivienne is a spoiled ******. And her attitude towards Blackwall pissed me off.  I honestly like Sera in ways. But she's short sighted. And disapproves of the stupidest things. 'I believe in Andraste. But how dare you say the inquisition is holy !' The girl makes no sense. But it's part of her charm I guess.

I cannot stand Sera. While I have no problem with outgoingroguish, rebellious, or little crazy type companion, I find Sera annoying and childish. She is extremely short-sighted, and whining at many things you do. It's not necessary for her to be completely mature or super serious, but Sera act like ten year old spoiled brat or obnoxious person who's judging people and what they do left and right. I just hate her personality, and sue me if you must but I think something is not right in Sera's head...she is crazy and certainly in a bad way.

Surprising enough, I don't hate Vivienne that much, despite that I dislike her and don't like her for her lack of empathy for fellow mages, however I lost all respect for her when seeing her opinion towards the Grey Wardens. I thought she would know better than to call them a relic of the past. We still need them for two more Blights, and in case more Darkspawn's incursion, but I suppose that's Vivienne's character, an arrogant person who thought they knew everything.

I'll have to admit this is the first BioWare games where I actually want to boot someone out of my party. I suppose Sera is to love or to hate character for you, but Sera really gets on my nerves.

I don't know about all that. I honestly think all the characters were well written. If they weren't people wouldn't care at all.

Vivienne is spoiled and oppressive. Sera is a little on the crazy side. That's the two that most people don't like. They were written to be that way though. The fact that people don't like them is an attribute to their writers.

Having a character with negative traits has nothing to do with gender. To me.

From what I gathered in her conversations, it's not hard to see why she opposes pushing the holy angle on the Inquisition. In a nutshell, she prefers that the Inquisitor be more down to earth, rather than becoming "high and mighty" and whatnot. When the Inquisitor first takes the ceremonial sword upon arrival to Skyhold, she greatly approves of the "Because it's right" option, since the Inquisitor will say something along the lines of it not being about sending a message.

I find myself being overly generous when it comes to companions, large part due to my want of getting the most content the game has to offer, including their various quests and dialogue. If I had to pick a character I could probably do without, it would probably be Vivienne. I rarely take her anywhere, and frankly I think it suits her character to just stick around Skyhold too, letting her sit in her little decadent nest somewhere in the fortress. I imagine that's not far off from the life she left behind, so in my neglect, I give her a piece of home.

Sorry Vivienne, it may have been the whole point to hate you, but hate you I do.

I don't dislike any of the other companions, my favourites being Solas and Cole...my boys. James Norton did an absolutely fantastic job of voicing Cole, as did Gareth David-LLoyd for Solas.  They're my party staples and they make it very difficult for me to mix things up like I wanted to...
