My melee rogue only just now hit the point where I can pick specialisations (don't have a lot of tme to play with work atm.)

I'm still completely unsure about whether to go for Tempest or Assassin though, so I'd like to hear some opinions on and experiences with either spec. I've heard positive things about both. Great utility and powerful moves for the tempest, and some powerful combos with the assassin.

Though melee rogue has been somewhat painful on nightmare, I do plan to stick with it. I would like to have a viable build if I decide to go archer for boss fights later on though.

Tempest, hands down for me. Fire Flask for massive burst DPS especially with Deathblow, Frost Flask to get a bit of a defensive boost in sticky situations, Lightning Flask for... anything. You can either dodge any attack or pump up lots of damage in auto-attacks in a very short time. And the Focus ability does absurd damage at focus 3 too.

What does assassin have against that? A damaging move that's slightly redundant anyway, a 25% damage boost on one enemy, a party cloak that doesn't work against most tough foes because they're Perceptive? Pfeh.

What does assassin have against that?

Hidden Blades, incredible stealth uptime (and auto crit out of stealth), and the ability to double your entire party's damage for 8 seconds?

Also the flexibility of not having half your bar being non damaging skills (flasks + stealth)

Tempest. It allows you to use focus abilties without actually using focus. Not sure if it's a bug or intended, but Assassin can't compare to the ability to use Thousand Cuts/Mark of the Rift for free every 32 seconds. The description does specify abilities don't cost stamina (nothing about focus), so there is a chance this will be changed in a patch.

I don't think you should compare 2 specs based alone on their Focus ability. Am sure someone will put up some vids of fastest dragon kills with an Assassin rogue sometime soon :)

I think there is some misconception about how mark of death works for people to be disregarding it so easily. Mark of death does not make a target immune to damage when it is applied. The enemy still takes all the dmg your whole party deals the mark counts it and when you use it again before the 8 sec duration is up it deals all the dmg you just did again plus some bonus for how quickly you hit it the second time. So it effectively doubles your whole parties dps output.

My opinion is leave tempest for sera and have your dw rogue go assassin. Use them together and setup dps phases with the whole party. I have done about 22500 dmg in 6-7 sec at lvl 14 using this. The original dmg being about 10500 then mark of death hitting for 12000.

I tried using the Shadow Strike upgrade to reduce Flask of Fire cooldown, but it doesn't work? Is the Shadow Strike upgrade bugged?

Using Thousand Cuts every 32 seconds will more than double your group's dps.

I like the tempest for the survivability. Flask of lightning is my 'oh sh*t'-button, and flask of frost is excellent for crowd control and shatter combos.

Could do with some more awesome alchemy, though.

My understanding is that your focus not being used up is a bug and will be removed.

Thanks for your replies people!

I'm still in doubt though, of course the tempest would be a no brainer with flask of fire negating the focus cost. That said, if it's removed Mark of Death might be more viable.

Still, I'm leaning towards tempest more at the moment. Honestly, I think I'll just do a few more levels, save my game and then try out both to make up my mind.

That's for the best really. Spamming Thousand Cuts gets old. Also, half the fun of the combo system is putting together a party that can rapidly build focus.

It sounds like Tempest is better all-around (mostly because Flask of Fire), whereas Assassin is great for bosses.

Being able to fire off multiple Explosive Shots feels like it would help going through trash easier.

Regarding Flask of Fire (Unquenchable Flames), when you activate it, are abilities currently on cool down made usable? Or does the ability need to be off cool down when you cast Flask of Fire?

No.
