Okay, I have a bit of experience modding (mostly in Oblivion), and am hoping to begin working with Dragon Age Origins.  I figured there havn't been enough "How the Heck do I do This???" posts here yet, so I should contribute one of my own :D  Mostly I enjoy making textures for games, and don't really care to learn modelling or too much about the Toolset right now, so I have a few questions, and would love it anyone knowledgable could either answer them or point me to a relevant tutorial.  Here's pretty much what I want to know:

1) - Assuming I want to use my own textures on models that already exist in the game (as seperate items though; I don't want to change the texture of existing items but rather re-use the models for new items), what tools would I need?

2) - How do I take a model from the game and add my own texture to it?

3) - How do I add my copy of that model (with a new texture) back into the game, either to specific vendors/chests or through random placement all through the game?

4) - How are textures stored?  i.e. What format are they?  Are the diffuse/normal/etc maps stored as layers or seperate files?

5) - How would I then distribute my mod?  I understand I upload it to a site like DAONexus, but I don't know anythig about the folder structure of Dragon Age yet.

Essentially I want be able to take any item I see in the game, change it's texture to something I like, and then add that as a seperate item back into the game so that both the original item and my new one exist in the game.  I will be extremely grateful if anyone can help me reach this goal, and look forward to being a part of this modding community!

The Toolset does mostly everything. You will also need Excel or Openoffice.

I should point you to the wiki, it has so many informations. Browsing is awkwards so i point you to something

http://social.biowar...x.php/Tutorials

http://social.biowar...index.php/Model

http://social.biowar.../Textureformats

The textures are packed in ERF files. You should really hook up the wiki here and look at the Article "ERF"

Retextureing is mostly as usual thou! With the exception of Tint maps, which are very important when all you do is changing the diffuse map which is color. Tints can recolor it. --> Wikiii

Creating copies of items is quiet possible. But i see there is a critical bug that hinders creating copies of Items to great effect. If Itemvariations.xls mean anything to you. You will hardly be able to distribute them, if all the bug does it create conflicts in Biowares reserved range to make it sound bad lol.

Gosh there is so much to write about creating new Items, the little text box here is a laugh. So i stop.

There is a thread here http://social.biowar...75/index/301264 that may be of some help.  Also see this thread: http://social.biowar.../index/320619/1

Ah, thank you both; there seems to be quite a bit of literature to go over! I suppose it's time to start looking into this, thanks again!
