Went to the area with the Demon surrounded by the pillars - scouted the area found a few dead bodies but nothing seems to progress this quest further. Is there something missing or is the quest bugged?

Try destroying the pillars?

First off, make sure you have Solas with you ( you prolly did, but want to clarify for others who may read this ) ...Second, before you get to the Demon there are 2-3 places nearby that you must find that have dead bodies which will spark comment from Solas when you find each one ...he gets angier and angier. Once you find them all head back to the Demon and a cut scene will happen leading up to you deciding whether or not to fight and kill the demon or destroy the pillars while the demon tries to eat your head. I let Cassandra just taunt the demon while I destroyed the pillars ...this gives you a "Solas greatly approves" response and you will see another cut scene where Solas and the now freed spirit say goodbye before she fades away. In another playthrough, I'll most-likely kill the demon just to see what Solas' response will be :P

edit: letting Solas kill the mages after destroying the pillars and freeing the Spirit will also net you great approval from him

Found the Dead Bodies - but still not triggering - Solas just keeps making comments on the dead bodies.

Follow the trail of bodies southeast. Alternately, highlight the quest on your map. The map leads you directly to it.

Yeah still no go - found all the burnt bodies - the 3 single ones with arrows in them. There is no marker for the quest -even though I have it in my list and set to active.

There were no markers showing where all the dead bodies are for this quest. The only marker I had was for where his spirit/demon friend is imprisoned. If you haven't got to the cutscene with the mages yet then you haven't found all the spots where dead bodies are that makes Solas comment/get angry enough to lead you back to where your decisions need to be made about his friend. Keep looking around is now my best offer of help. Best of luck to you.

I had the same problem, but after running around finding a bunch of bodies, the confrontation with the mage and demon finally happened. Then after the fight (I supported Solas' view), I got a loading screen and then both demon and mage are gone and quest is still stuck on "deal with the demon".

I used quick travel to the dalish camp and ran back, and now there is instead an invincible demon. Can't be hurt at all. Mage nowhere to be seen.

Don't want to skip quest, but looks like I'll have to. This can't be working as intended.

I don't see why it would be ...it's not broken. I'm sorry you think this is bugged but it's not. You just haven't done something you need to in order to get it to advance. I gave you very clear advice on what to do ...if you didn't follow, don't blame the devs for your lack of being able to complete the quest.

You don't have to kill the demon? Well, shoot. I destroyed the pillars but he kept attacking, so I attacked back.

Oh, well. I talked with Solas afterward and we're still cool anyway.

Already followed your advice - watched countless you tube videos on it - and it's still not triggering. The Quest won't even show active on the world map when all other quests do so - let alone when in the area and others are experiencing similar problems with this quest.

I had the same problem, going to the bodies and investigating them, going back and forth between the bodies and then following up from the part of the path that is really close to the dalish camp back to the demon repeatedly can eventually trigger the cutscene (you'll know when you hear Solas' reaction to the site) however this quest is extremely buggy, and it is possible that this part of the quest won't trigger at all, or it may trigger and then be impossible to finish.

Actually it is broken, I've spent over an hour investigating every body and doing everything concievable to get this quest to work. On my quest log it says it's already complete and it's just refuses to work. Other people have reported this too, it needs to be patched

It very much is broken, you are wrong. Just because you never got the bug does not mean no-one else has. I know for a fact it is bugged because I experienced it myself and it cannot be completed unless revert to an earlier save and cross my fingers hoping it does not glitch again. I know for fact I am not only one who has encountered this glitch and there are many threads about this glitch both this section of the forums since game was released plus other sections including a large one EA technical help section.

The quest was a little buggy in my experience. I made a quick save (on PC) just before approaching the demon/spirit for later reloading to see different results. The cut scene sometimes triggered, the other times not. No predictable pattern found so far. I've already made a habit of giving a quick save before a decision-making moment. So if I regret a choice I've made, I can always reload the game to see if the other choices are better.

For my part, I'm having trouble just getting the quest in the first place; no matter what I do in my playthrough Solas doesn't start this quest.

Ok i'm stuck with this too.

Firstly, I came from the edges of the map and went there first so i didn't see all the bodies, but the one that made him go 'no, no no NO!'.   Then we saw the demon and no cutscene happened.  We then looked and saw other bodies that were examined though only 'arrow shot down mage' was said so i donno if it was triggered.

Since then there has been no cutscene and i have thorogly swept through over and over to the point that most other quests have done.

when near permaniter he mentions the arrow shot down mage but never moves on, the bodies don't get examined and the demon is there with no interaction.  At one point there were soldiers there and the demon was within a trebuchet showing that the game isn't fully recognising the demon as there.  To further this evidence if my characters who follow the primary character follow me and run into the demon, the demon is moved out of the way.

Also noticed that the quest when set active doesn't show the quest and the quest objective to find the demon is greyed out suggesting that the system either doesn't recognise it or believes it to be done.  I need to refresh it but not sure how.

I've tried going back without solas to see if that would refresh it and it does get rid of the demon and the crystals but putting solas back there does nothing.  Neither does going there playing as Solas (as this worked with another scene with the pub in fereldan with Damion).

I'm getting the initial cutscene but my game hard crashes to system OS every time I attack the pillars. I can destroy one or two sometimes but have always crashed. Purposefully not using tactical cam. I'm on PS4. Quest is definitely bugged - I hard crashed 10 times in a row before finally giving up and leaving the quest for when it's patched.

Same here. Solas and I are on pretty good terms, though he does disagree with my decisions 30-40% of the time. Is it tied to approval?

I'm encountering the bug this way:

Every time I see the dead mages Solas makes a comment about how they were shot by arrows. Depending on whether I have Sera or Iron Bull in my party, I get a party comment. That's the only thing I get. When I see other dead mages in the area, no one comments. The map has a bunch of diamonds on it, but the quest isn't shown in the top right as is it normally does and just floods the area in purple as if the quest has been selected from the Journal screen (it hasn't). The same banter repeats again and again about the mages being shot with arrows. When I walk in the circle with the fade demon, nothing is triggered.

Oh, and I'm on PS4.

Does it help to leave the zone and come back, or make a Save and reload it?  That seems to help some people, for example if they go to the tavern for the Dorian quest and nobody's there.

I find that the trigger for the Solas quest is, when you get close enough to where the spirit friend is, Solas will say: "Thank you for this, Inquisitor.  I sense my friend is not far away." [Something along those lines, but for sure it starts with "Thank you for this, Inquisitor."  If I don't get this line, then when I walk up to it my game crashes.  So I think that line is the key.

I've done this quest a few times (to test out different outcomes and conversation options), and I've approached the quest location from a few different directions.  I find that the cut-scene where we run up to the binding circle still triggers fine, even when I approach the quest location in a way that I don't encounter the arrow-ridden bodies.  As long as Solas says "Thank you for this, Inquisitor," I'm golden.

Other than the quest not triggering, there's also kind of a painful bug while you're talking with Solas about to kill the mages. After destroying the summoning circle stones, the pride demon may spawn again during your conversation and kill off your party. He vanishes as soon as the convo is over.

Well now i've further broke the game.

I recently found after this update that happened that even though i didn't do the cutscene, i could still harm the demon and the pillars using the AoE attacks like Blizzard.  So i destroyed all the pillars hoping that would correct the game...It did not.

Now the cutscene attempts to happen but i end up with a black screen where if i click i can attack but only attack (sounds), and after the load nothing happens.  It's completely buggered.

That, and going through all his dialogue at Skyhold.
