So I am almost all the way through the game now and have found very few schematics.  And those I have found more or less all look exactly the same.  It's all the default Inquisitor look.  What am I missing?

There are armour schematics sold in the Val Royeaux market (southeast corner), Redcliffe (near the docks), and the Hissing Wastes (in the canyon). I haven't visited the Emerald Graves and Emprise du Lion, so there could be a shop there that sells schematics.

Loot more. I've picked up quite a few schematics from chests.

There really aren't many. And seemingly everything nice is Human-only, so Qunari, Dwarf, and Elf inquisitors are stuck with the hideous leather coats instead of actual armor. Unless you have the DLC, in which case the Dragon armor's the nicest look.

Really?

The Dragon Armour looks so dumb. Like... ridiculously dumb.

It really stands out next to all the- mostly- practical armour designs.

The choicest schematics have to be pried from the dead bodies of high dragons.

I believe most schematics are sold in the Val Royeaux lower market, and they are expensive.

I can at least like looking at it, as opposed to beige coats that somehow qualify as heavy armor.

Hissing Wastes contains the vast body of the high end schematics. Check there.

But it's sooooo pricey!

Orlesians could spare to knock off a few coppers

Shop and kill dragons. That's how you get high-end schematics.

I also found a few in chests in Emprise du Lion, but I suspect those are random drops.

Shop, loot and grind. You'd be surprised how often some of those little exclamation marks have a nice reward for completing them.

I have found like 15 armor schematics (or upgrade schematics) looting, but most have been kind of low level for me.

It's probably down to aesthetics. One person will look at an all black set with red spikes covering it and be like, WHOA AWESOME! Someone else will look at the same armor and think, wow... that's the most immersion-breaking crap I've ever seen. Who would wear that?

Since it's a schematic, you should be able to change colours. Anyway, it's not colours that bother me most of the time, it's models. Very small amount of them looks significantly different, and those that do often are restricted to human-only. Like best schematics you can get before Skyhold, Orlesian Army sets.

The Dalish, when you track them down, sell both the Grey Warden Warrior and Battlemage schematics. If you want the proper paladin look pick up the Orlesian Chevalier schematic and make it out of Veridium.

See, my problem isn't necessarily that - it's that if you aren't human, you're restricted as all hell. You're mainly limited to the default Vanguard, Hunter, etc armors, and they're..not very attractive. Mainly because you have no control over the colors involved, and my Qunari walking around in the same hideous steel-and-beige Vanguard style for half the friggin' game is basically no option. The "upgrades" are all pretty much identical save for statistics.

Yet we know this isn't even a mesh problem, because the armor you can't wear will adapt on the preview screen to fit the character. It's restricted for the sake of being restricted.

I seriously just don't get why Bioware loves the color beige so much. First the default Skyhold outfit, and now on the armors..

Wait, how are you getting schematics for the default Inquisitor armour?
My problem is that I can't find those schematics. If I loot or buy the hunter/prowler armour, it looks like the default, but if I craft it it becomes an entirely different set of armour.

I am loving the game, but man the armor designs for the inquisitor have been disappointing. The best looking armor in the game is currently glitched for me, hopefully it gets fixed.

Ohh... C'mon don't tell me you don't know?

Paid DLC of course!

Don't forget it's EA and BioWare ...

@OP, I agree with you, there seems to be a lack of variety to choose from. Sometimes I feel like the NPCs are looking much better than my inquisitor.

I actually miss the armour in 50 Shades of Brown (Origins) compared what's on offer in DAI. Actually, now that I think about it, one thing DA2 did really well was its armours, which mostly (not the Champion Armour) balanced cool looks with (reasonable) believability. The DA2 Black Fox's Jerkin remains my favourite armour of all three games.
