Are the progressive views on gender, sex, and sexuality rather anachronistic?

I honestly think that he meant what he said

He didn't understand words like "flirt" and "parents" because they do not exist (anymore) in qunlat because there are no such "realities" an actual linguistic term though in English it is actually called culture-bound concept/item/term

That dialogue though. He pretty much knew what he was saying and how to say that

He totally understood what parents were, though.  I had that conversation with him and he knew exactly what I was talking about.  He didn't ask for clarification at all.  He knew of the word and understood the concept.  He just clarified that he didn't have them the way that my Inquisitor would think of them.

Goes both ways;

1) Bioware do seem to be pushing the whole 'look at us, we are diverse, he's gay, she's gay, you're gay, everyone's gay!!! woo!"

2) Homophobia and the reaction to it is stupid, since same-sex relationships, or rather, same-sex activities were common place throughout society and generally accepted throughout the world until we hit the more classical modern times, when the pendulum swung the other way and for whatever reason it became a 'taboo' and we now have to fight a rather daft battle for it to swing back in 'favour' - incidentally I'm happy with the forward-thinking this entails, equality for equality's sake but I don't think it justifies point 1.

 On that note, the more historically aware you are of homosexuality being accepted in most forms, the less the need to pander to it and/or react to it. (It was common in African tribes, the Native Americans, Europe, Asia - particularly weird one is Greece and Japan both actually found no fault in adult men taking an adolescent boy for that purpose, given that they're both on opposite sides of the world)

So anyway I suppose what I'm trying to say is; I don't have an issue with the homosexuality or gender identity issues arising in the game, or any game for that matter, but I do think a world based on high-fantasy, low technology (well for the purposes of swords and sticks) should be focusing, maybe, on LGBT issues of that time era rather than modern-day tales, because, generally that leads to less (or maybe more) values dissonance and potential for 'pandering' cries.

I am bringing this question up because I remember one of the devs saying there is no gay marriage in Thedas, simply because it's anachronistic.

However, I think they're very contemporary, to the point of almost being anachronistic.

I agree; I'd toss "rather ham fisted" in there as well, at least with the "meet the Chargers" Krem/IB/Inq exchange.

Marriage in general wasn't really done for any romance in the da series except for Alistair. In this game they said it was simply because the world was too torn apart for marriage to even matter.

I don't feel it's anachronistic, no. First, this isn't medieval Europe. Second, there were other cultures who had different takes on sexuality and gender in the past before Western culture swooped in, so I don't feel like it's particularly unrealistic for 'pre-modern' cultures to come up with these things. (Yes, swooping is baaaaaaaad. No cheese for you.)

Even Western civilization hasn't always had the same views regarding human sexuality. The mores (sexual and otherwise) of the ancient Greeks and Romans for example, were far different than their equivalents during the medieval or Renaissance periods.

Thedas isn't medieval Europe and its fine for them to say that homosexual relationships are simply OK in Thedas

I think its a little leazy, but whatever
