So, with all the fade business going on in this story, I'm kind of surprised we didn't visit The Black City at any point... I mean, an ancient darkspawn trying to enter the fade to become a god is the plot, and not even a mention of The Black City anywhere.

There's a few mentions of the Black City. He wants to get to the Black City because he saw the throne and it was empty.

I would really like to know once and for all if it really was ever golden or if it was truly just black all along...that and how & why are the Darkspawn connected to it.

I guess the thing that bugs me is I wasn't able to see anything clearly in the fade that looked like the Black City and you're supposed to be able to see it everywhere in the Fade. But the place we ended up in the Fade also had city-like structures carved into it at places, is it even kind of possible we ended up in the Black City and didn't notice it, or did I simply miss the view of the Black City in the distance?

You could see it back in DA:O right? Like in the Harrowing quest and the Broken Circle?

Yeah, in DAO, both times you're in the fade, if you look up, you can see The Black City. Must have skipped their minds that you're supposed to be able to see it from anywhere in the fade...

i never saw the black city in game in DAo DAII o DAI, but honestly the city is the maker property and have nothing to do with the Inquision

In DAO there are a few small statues of it, but you can see it every where in the fade sections there (here's a picture). In DA2 you are sort of in a courtyard with barely any sky, so it wasn't a big deal that I didn't see it. But you should be able to see it in DAI because you get some really good glimpses of the fade. But as far as I can tell, you do not see it anywhere. This is either an important piece of information, or an oversight. I could have just missed it because I wasn't looking as carefully at the sky as I could have been.

Was probably an oversight. You can head cannon it as 'the area was cloudy with a touch of Fade' though.

Probably an oversight, the same way on DA 2 they completely skipped over the part of the Magic codex entry that said that there is no way to teleport anything or anyone, but then every mage enemy constantly teleports during the combat.

...because the act of getting to the Black City is liable to leave Thedas a demon-strewn wreck. Getting there is explicitly Corypheus's endgame, and even then it's less for what's there than what the act represents.
I, for one, remain convinced it was never more than a prison; one that no longer has an inmate.

The thing is the black city or golden city or whatever would be shaped by the minds of those visiting the city, their wants, their knowledge. I can't image the city shaped well when men/women lustful for power visited it and most likely brought many horrors to bear against them.
I doubt we will ever visit the golden city, and if we do it will be shaped by whoever we are after

I don't imagine he wants to go back to that part of the Fade. It's unpleasant.
Like your grandmother's guest shower.
Nothing is THAT unpleasant.

Honestly I suspect it was where Nightmare was hanging out. You find some letters from a slave who worked for Corypheus before he went into the Fade, and it seems he was plagued by fears of waning believe in the Old Gods, and was driven to increasingly extreme uses of magic to try and do something about it, at which point he started hearing whispers in his dreams. When he shows up in the Fade, what does he claim he sees? Nothing. But what was probably his darkest fear in light of the waning belief of gods? That the old gods are not gods, so an empty Golden City seems to be a physical manifestation of that. I wonder if the Blight is really just the corrupting influence of Nightmare? That would partially explain why Nightmare 'works for' Corypheus perfectly willingly, in that it would actually sort of be the demon using his creation to try and free it fully from the fade so it can feed.

Likely an oversight or a ret-con.

Well given how they built up their power not just blood magic but stolen elven artifacts also, we don't know to much about the ritual that was used to enter the city, but this game did give strong hints of how it might have happen.
Think they did enter the fade and a center area, and your probbly half right was influnced by nightmare some when they entered,, but we do have proof about the elven gods now perhaps they entered the wrong section of the gods and thinking the dread wolf impersioned more then the elven gods now, there is a lot of complex crap going on.
But its going to be interesting to find out who all the dread wolf tricked.

I'm actually pretty disappointed we didn't finally see it. I've played out the final battle of the entire Dragon Age franchise like this:
1. Villain achieves Godhood.
2. Takes his throne inside the Black City, which becomes shaped by his personality and desires.
3. A massive tear in the veil, and the city itself enters Thedas as a flying fortress.
4. All of Thedas unites to assault the massive demon army under the fortress.
5. A few band of heroes (Inquisitor, Hawke, Warden, Morrigan and others) infiltrate the main fortress of the city, the final dungeon of the game (cue whatever final dungeon music from a Final Fantasy game).
I'm sorry, it's hard for me not to geek out at the thought of that. Of course this will NEVER happen, but if it did. Man....what a finale to Dragon Age that would be.

The explanation for mages teleporting in DA2 is that "they're not teleporting, they turn invisible and then run to there at super speed." Seriously. I am not kidding. Gaider said that. DA2 was so, so bad.

TIL people honestly think the Black City is the Maker's. They've always said they'll never confirm or deny the Maker's existence. The Black City is too major a thing in the lore and in the storyline to go without answers from the company that told us the Reaper's motives against all logic and reason.
The explanation for mages teleporting in DA2 is that "they're not teleporting, they turn invisible and then run to there at super speed." Seriously. I am not kidding. Gaider said that. DA2 was so, so bad.
To be fair, that was another writing team - and almost everyone hated that circular logic they came up with. I'd much rather the Maker and Black City be left to speculation, if nothing else I want at least some things in the world of DA to remain a mystery, though I know I'm probably in the minority.
