As I understand it, the canon Shepard is a paragonish Shepard who chooses Anderson but doesn't save the council.

Umm, where does it say that Anderson was picked for the Council instead of Udina? All it says on Anderson's character page is "Though he loathes dealing with bureaucracy in all its forms, Anderson now resides on the Citadel playing a role in galactic politics."

It says he plays a role, not that he IS on the Council. Chill out, man.

And why is it Ashley stayed with Commander Shepard after Saren to fight the Geth and Kaidan stayed with the Alliance to fight the Geth. Okay, I'm being nit picky.

I might be drinking too much Koolaid, but at the end of ME 1, the council asks Shepard's opinion of who should be the human representative because Shepard's opinion would "carry alot of weight." That does not mean Shepard actually selects who is finally picked, whether Udena or Anderson. Likely there is a process, as in any elected position involving peers and a vote. What a Spectre things shouldn't matter one bit other than political propaganda. Watch the end again, Shepard's choice doesn't guarentee anything.
