Anyone else just switch to normal difficulty after seeing how tactics work?

I'm playing on Nightmare, and most of the time I roll fire/lightning made (me), a spirit/cold mage (Solas), Cassandra, and Varrick or Sera.  Most of the time the AI seems to do what they're supposed to, i.e. staying at range.  Close quarters fights like the rift inside the cave in the Oasis can be trickier.  Solas sometimes just stands toe to toe, as does Sera.  But I like the tough fights because they force you to think about party placement.

Its not always bad if ranged run to melee range. Depends on what is happening but unless avoiding enemy AoE staying in Barrier or tank protection range can be beneficial. Without FF. That said, if H is for Hold, damn hold. Its not difficult.

I found normal far too easy personally.  Then again I also don't maintain the same opinion on the tactical cam as most either.  I just rebound all my keys and have been enjoying the game immensely since.

Its not just the party set up that I meant by variety but also the way the encounters are approached, the way characters are built, abilities, spells, etc.

I played as warrior in previous games but not as a tank, didn't use any taunts or threaten type abilities. Other warriors were the same. In my latest origins playthrough I didn't even use activated abilities for my warriors, just passives and sustained abilities, can that be done this time? In my latest playthrough I went full melee, no ranged builds at all. Throughout all my playthroughs I've used many combinations and approaches. 1 warrior, 2 mages, 1 rogue, or 4 warriors, or 2 warriors, 2 rogues, or 2 warriors, 1 mage, 1 rogue, or 3 warriors, 1 rogue, etc. These characters can be built and used many ways. You don't have to play one way to succeed but many ways can lead to success. Mages I only ever gave group heal or heal, and were never set up as dedicated healers.

Can you play this game without barrier or guard abilities and still succeed? Or do you have to use these abilities? No choice? Can you play with a full melee party and do well?

There is a lot less gameplay customization in this game if compared to Origins. But the same was the case of Dragon Age 2, so I guess it is not to anyone's surprise.

As of now, it is highly recommended to have a dedicated SnS Tank and a Barrier casting Mage, while the other two slots can be whatever, though Archers and Mages work best.
With time it may change. I'm sure people will come up with non-traditional builds capable of making this game just as playable, though not with the same variety Origins had.

So how do you people do party placement?

Tactical mode is such a mess on PC that nobody seems to use it.

In normal mode, you can't really position unless you manually run the character to the spot. And even then, that doesn't keep the ranged chars from running towards the enemy once you switch out.

How did people solve the Dead Hand riddle in the Fens without tactical mode?

Using tactical mode to place my characters precisely and let them stay there was the only way I managed, and it was sooooo awful. In normal mode, they always ran to another place once I switched characters.
