"Oh, hey! You're the leader who took the fall at the dawn of a revolution? I'll drink to that."

It couldn't be any worse than this.

Alistair: "Hey! total stranger here is the only memento I have left of my lover who died to stop the Blight. Accept it."

Hawke: "Shouldn't you keep it...uh...nevermind. Thanks...I guess."

*At the present time*

Hawke: "That's how we became friends."

The Inquisitor: "SEEMS LEGIT."

My Hawke sided with the Templars, became Viscount, and killed Anders

IMO, I think the story told makes sense. He was Viscount but the Templars started taking Red Lyrium, I assume Cullen was leaving Kirkwall by then. The Red Lyrium made them more paranoid of him and he split. Having encountered the stuff he did some more research to figure out what was wrong and discovered the Grey Warden influence. When he saw the danger he focused on moving his Grey Warden brother to safety and focused on figuring out the problem with the premature calling and met Loghain.  IMO, dealing with the Grey Wardens was far more important than a bunch of Mages and Templars going at it....again. His brother's life was on the line. As far as he's concerned there was nothing else he could do for the Mages or Templars. First of all, the mages wouldn't want his help and second of all the Templars had already chased him out of Kirkwall. His job with those people were done.

I also get why Varric kept Hawke a secret. Cassandra wanted him to lead and as far as Varric was concerned he saved Hawke's life by keeping him secret because he would have been at the conclave and probably would have just died since Varric sort of believes the PC could be the Herald.  I love it when Varric says "You people have done enough to him." Which is true. in DA2 Hawke was just a guy trying to make some money and fell into the role of glorified errand boy and eventual scapegoat.

How did he meet Loghain and how did they become friends? My Hawke and Loghain are the exact opposite of each other, I found it extremely weird that they would get along.

My theory is that Loghain was actually the warden Hawke met in the Deep Roads that took in either Bethany or Carver, and again later during the qunari attack. It was only really Stroud for playthroughs where neither Loghain or Alistair was in the wardens. Varric just replaced Loghain with Stroud in the story(both the one he wrote and the one he told Cassandra) to avoid making Hawke look bad by associating them with the infamous traitor.

Unrelated; one problem I did have with Hawke's presentation was that my warrior Hawke was a two-handed weapon user, but in DAI warrior Hawke apparently defaults to sword & shield. I would have liked an option to change that.

I thought it was a bit stupid since some of my hawke's had mage children to look after and she wouldn't leave Anders or Fenris. I just Headcanon that they come and stay with them in Skyhold after Cory, is taken care of.

Also some of my hawke's are on a mission for Fiona is the only way I can explain away the Red lyruim quest.

My Hawke didn't want that responsibility, it was tossed at them by Anders. After 7 years in Kirkwall they wanted nothing to do with that mage-templar ****. But then Bioware says - no, your Hawke helped many Circles to rebel and went on some fishy errand with some Warden I barely remember.

Well, thanks.

My Hawke didn't say that.  Was Anders alive in your playthrough and your Hawke in a romance with him?  Did Hawke support what Anders did in Kirkwall?  I'm assuming if you picked either of those two options will have your Hawke actually going around helping the mage rebellion.

Well, honestly. He is the one that released Corypheus. The fact that he wanted to help fight him is not surprising. Plus, the Mage/Templar war had gone far beyond Hawke. Taking part in the war on any one side wouldn't have helped anything. It was pointless death on both sides. He probably realized that.

Ol'Corry was getting out anyway, Hawke only sped it up unintentionally. Besides. Hawke didn't know he could body hop or control the Wardens through their taint. When Hawke found out Hawke immediately tried to set things right even though Hawke had done far more than what was ever expected of him/her and the fact is that Ol'Corry was only his/her problem because the Wardens dragged his/her bloodline into it.

I'm okay with Hawke doing her stuff while being on the run. Mine romanced Isabela, had Carver in the wardens and was pretty moderate towards mages and templars, it all just blew up in her face.

I'm not too happy with Hawke's dialogues though. Sudden changes of tone, fragmented personality, always serious, blaming Stroud in the fade for something he didn't even know his fellows were doing, few jokes with Varric (I expected them to be a riot) etc. Yes, there are conflicts everywhere and holes in the sky, but her experience in Kirkwall wasn't exaclty idyllic. If she looked sad or guilty after Stroud's death, or worried after seeing what the wardens had done, it would have been understandable, but she was almost always serious and came off a bit out of character compared to DA2. In DA2 you could see purple Hawke be genuinely happy, sad, angry or tired through the jokes and deadpan comments. In DAI everyone seemed like a pissed diplomatic Hawke.

I think this mostly has to do with recycled lines for all three main tones. The few times she said something snarky it was perfect.

I had a Male Warrior Hawke who supported the Templars, so the explanation of what he'd been doing and why Red Lyrium was such a big deal to him made perfect sense.  How/Why he was friends with the Warden I had in that playthrough was a little less clear, but I was so happy to see both of them, it didn't matter.

Going to play through with a female Hawke mage Keep import next.  Should be interesting.

Hawke will say that if you choose the "Hawke supported Anders actions" option in the Keep.

The only thing I didn't like was Stroud and Cassandra accusing my Hawke of supporting the rebellion. I didn't, i just didn't support Meredith's genocide; there's a distinct difference.

Not really surprised, maybe if as someone else says he was going to be the hero for this game he would have some prominence. But the reception DA2 got, plus the absolute dire and shoddy writing among other things, well I'm not surprised he's been put on the backburner.

If anything, I'm surprised he even turns up. Best thing that can happen to him for the future of the series is for him to fade into a bit of obscurity and be relegated to post-it note mentions like the Warden. >_> At least until BW have mastered the choice-impact flow for the entirety of their series.

Hawke was one of the pleasant surprises for me in this game. I was pretty disgusted with her by the end of DA2 and didn't care about seeing her again, but I brought over my Keep info and customized her anyway, and I found that I enjoyed the interactions. She's humble about her failings and not trying to play busybody and fix everyone. Corypheus taunting her in the Fade made me mad. I guess I liked her better as an NPC than as a PC.

Though, it did sound a little weird to hear her talk about blood magic when she's a blood mage, but I figure she's seen the worst of what it can do so the lines still fit.

Yeah, I am like what happen to my Hawke personaltiy? She is not a nice girl all the time she is more or less a snarky somewhat crazy ****** like Harley Quinn. Anders fell hard for her even with all her flaws. But now she was just the light verison of the character I had created in DA2 she sided with the mages as she has some standards and morals.

Plus she hated Meredith and Elthina, since they were sticks in the mud living in the past. My Hawke's are blood Mages damit she should not be talking badly about blood magic urgh. But she not dumb so telling people she not a blood mage is in charcater.

It worked nicely for my main Hawke - stayed in Kirkwall to be near Bethany, tried to keep Kirkwall from falling apart, shanked Anders, and stepped in only when Meredith was going to annul a whole circle for one rogue's actions.

I can see how it wouldn't work for other Hawkes though.

I'm pretty bothered by the loss of snark, but I figure Hawke's been through a lot and that's not unreasonable.  As someone else mentioned, the randomly yelling at the warden was so ridiculous and weird.  That's probably the most irritating part for me.  Now Hawke will yell at her random new friend!  Because nobody was ever part of a group without being entirely responsible for the actions and any and all members!  It just made Hawke seem kinda stupid.  I could see it making sense for aggro Hawke, but snarky/diplo?

And she ditched her LI.  Seriously?  And then went to Weisshaupt, in person, because she is totally a warden and a letter would never suffice.  Or sending one of the many actual wardens you have acquired in the inquisition by that time.  All I wanted was "and then she went back to her LI and they went on some adventures and junk".  I felt like I was supposed to kill her off.  It would have made a lot more sense story wise and that annoys me.  I love Hawke way too much to let that happen.

(I just want to add that I am in love with the game in general, and very excited to see Hawke... but I am probably too attached to Hawke and thus taking this personally.)

If you sided with the mages + approved of Anders, Hawke will mention (s)he helped the remaining circles rise up and rebel.

Varric has some dialogue in banters and such suggesting the LI will join Hawke on the journey to Weisshaupt, and in some cases, that the sibling probably will too.

Hah, same. For all my whining, seeing Hawke again made me want to replay DA2. And I haven't even finished DAI.

Since Loghain, Alistair, and Stroud all say they've been looking into Corypheus, I'd imagine they tracked down Hawke to find out what (s)he knew. Hawke, in return, asked them to look into red lyrium. It can be more of a business-type relationship if need be.

Well, its not like the 2 are separeted forever.

Varric talks about having to notify Merril of Hawke's wereabouts and stuff.

Still, Hawke being more concerned with his love would be better.

Because what i got from his atitude in my game was. "I like Merril, but she cant stay with me, otherwise she will be in danger" Emo BS.

On the other hand, i was very happy with my Warden's Romance with Morrigan, both respect and still love each other to great lenghts. As she said herself, "He was the only one i could talk as an equal".

She also acts way more natural, even playfully "insulting" the Warden when she mentions sending a letter to him "He will undoubtedly think i miss him and that will boost his ego. Be really thankful for what i am doing".

Thats the kind of dialogue i like to see, sure the Romance with Merril was cute & stuff in DA2, but i wish we could have seen more it, including a Merril Cameo (and for the people who like Tragic, how about the Inquisitor consolating Merril if we choose to kill Hawke?)

Anything better than the current "barely mentioned love interest" situation would be better, IMO.

I had Hawke romance Merrill and I can only imagine the crushing sorrow Merrill and Bethany would feel if Hawke died.

Bethany lost her friends in Lotherine, Carver, Leandra, and now her older Brother, who was always there to protect her

Merrill lost her best friends to the Eluvian, she lost her Keeper and her Clan (either by exile or killing them) when she tries to repair it, and now she lost Hawke

:crying:

I was fine, it fit my Hawke perfectly. I was worried she would be OOC but she was not at all and her reasons also fit her very well. ALso how her romance was handled with Isabela was also fine with me and again works.

"My Hawke" that phrase gets thrown around a lot here. When are people gonna realize there is no "My Hawke", but only "Hawke". We just got to play as him in a single game, but he still has a defined personality and goals, set by the writers. All we did, was decide how he went about his business.

(Same thing can be applied to the Warden and Inquisitor for that matter)

Pretty weird commentary.

DA is a RPG and we pretty much set the tone of our playable characters in the series.

There is no general "Hawke" and or "Warden", they always belong to the Player to a vast extend. They are supposed to be our PCs in the series, shaped the by the decisions and personalities that we picked from what Bioware Offered. All of that plus our own personal roleplay while playing a game.

Sure there are templates and only a limited number of parameters that really shape how stuff will act diferently on each game, but for everything else thats not shown in the game, its up to each player to make things up. That is the very nature of a RPG.

Bioware only tries to present us an outcome of what we picked for them, if you like what they did or not, its up to you.
