OK, I upgraded the garden to an Herb Garden.  I found Black Lotus seeds and planted them in the six pots.  I went away and came back, and they had grown.  But how do I harvest them?  The only option I get is to plant more seeds, nothing to harvest the plants that are in the pots.

If anyone can tell me what I'm doing wrong, I'd really appreciate it!

If it's the first time you've done it, chances are it hasn't fully grown. Read somewhere that for the first it takes TWO quick travels back and forth for it to grow and goes down to one QT after

Uhm, how do you exactly unlock the ability to plant the seeds? Because I've got a bunch of them, of different herbs to, but the six pots in the garden remain inactive for me. There's no option to plant anything. Do I need to talk to someone to gain access to the pots?

On the off-chance you're still wondering, or if this can help someone else with the same question:

After you unlock Skyhold (and its pots) you need to acquire seeds by gathering herbs out in the wild. There are 19 plants, including both common and rare, that you can get seeds for. As far as I can tell, it's random chance whether you will get seeds when you pick an herb; rare plants may have smaller odds on this. Once you get the seeds for a particular plant, however, you have unlimited access to seeds of that kind and will no longer need or be able to collect them. (In other words, once you get elfroot seeds, for example, you can plant them back at Skyhold in as many pots as you want as many times as you want; you will no longer find the seeds in the wild, but you don't need them.) Unfortunately, this is not retroactive, so no matter how many elfroot or embrium you dug up in the Hinterlands or wherever before you get to Skyhold, you still need to pick them again.

Also, just FYI, deathroot is one you cannot get seeds for. Those must be bought or picked in the wild, I believe.

It is indeed a random chance. If you want to make sure you get the seeds, when you encounter a plant you need, save before accessing it.

To plant the seeds, you may have to first upgrade the area and then choose "Herb Garden."  The pots may be there but not be functional until you perform the upgrade.

On a related note, does anyone get Deathroot seeds? I collected at least 100 of it, but not once it dropped seeds.

I don't think you *can* get deathroot seeds. They aren't exactly a good shape for pots.

What's that one last common seed then? Only one missing from the list is deathroot.

This seems to be a bug. As I figure it, deathroot should be the one missing from the 19. I could see a few reasons why it wouldn't give seeds: its name might suggest it's a dead version of a formerly living plant, and so shouldn't be able to be grown "directly," and of course the odd shape, as berelinde pointed out. However, the only other plant I think I'm missing, namely Crystal Grace, is rare rather than common. I don't know if Crystal Grace was meant to give seeds instead and was mistakenly put in the common list, with the result that it never unlocks, but something screwy seems to be going on any way you look at it.
