1: It seems the spirit passives apply to the blade generated barrier. Generally speaking the spirit tree is the complementary tree that seems to work best with a KE tank.
2: the blade deflection works when you use your blade spell as a projectile comes flying at you (arrow, dragon ball (...see what I did there?) of fire). If you are hitting someone as an incoming arrow comes, you will deflect it.
3: I went with spirit tree and frost. Having fade step is very useful when you want to put some distance between you and your enemies or catch up with your foes. There's also a passive that freezes your enemies when/if your barrier gets cut down on the other side. I find that going deeper in the tree doesn't offer that much more. I'm level 22 and I'm now looking into the fire tree to get "clean burn" passive. I would then generate barrier using the KE blade and fade cloak into people for 1000% weapon damage and then use a fire spell to deal a maximum of damage.
4: If you're soloing, there probably will be no flanking for you so I think crit and flanking are out of it. I would advice on focusing on magic because you will have enough mana regenerating for you not to worry too much about willpower. One useful piece of gear caught my attention recently. There's this "generate quard on hit", they provide guard for my mage as well and thus provide an additional protection when going up against big guys. I can even use this to freeze people by purposely letting my barrier go out and assosciating clean burn passive with this should prove to be extremely efficient because I would still have some damage mitigating effect. Still not too sure as to how guard is generated exactly. I just hit everybody and everything going 100% at it and it comes up. But if it really is "on hit" then I guess attacking wildlife before combat with staff should generate guard before the combat.
edit add:
Got a few more ability points to spend on my character and clean burn is absolutely ridiculous!!!!
Put barrier, fade cloak into enemy or fade step, hit with blade a few times and the cooldown for fade cloak is gone again!!!
You can even be fancy and throw in some fire spells in there. My next ability point will be fire mine (1600% weapon damage!!!!!)
