First time around I went with Unbowed, War Cry, Walking Fortress and Shield Wall for a Guard generation build. Found out after adding another skill that I couldn't map 5 skills so on my new Legionnaire I am debating on what 4 skills I want.

Current Level 12 Build:

Guardian Tree

Shield Wall + Chevalier's Step - Main Guard generation. Helps when fighting ranged enemies and heavy hitters.

Adamant + Turn the Bolt + Turn the Blade- Mitigate Guard and health loss.

Resilience + Biggest Threat - Move down the tree.

War Cry + Call to Arms + Cutting Words - Taunting generates 20% Guard per enemy for me and increases damage to targets by 20% for all party members.

Combined Arms Tree

Payback Strike - Starting skill.

It'll Cost You - Being hit is my goal. This is sweet revenge.

Deep Reserves - Shield Wall can use lots of stamina. This will help it regenerate faster.

Bear Mauls the Wolves - I can't always keep enemies in front of me. If they do get behind me this stops the flank bonus.

So far I have two Guard generating abilities, Shield Wall and War Cry. The abilities I am torn between are maxing Payback Strike for recovery from disabled conditions and a max of 600% weapon damage, Lunge and Slash for impact detonation and positioning or To the Death, which taunts an enemy and they do more damage every second but also take more damage every second for as long as I stay near them. The enhanced version would allow me to generate guard when they take damage. Seems like a good boss slaying ability.

My biggest question I have is about Lunge and Slash. Do impact detonations make a big enough difference to pick this skill over one of the others?

I will have 4 points left to use if I upgrade Payback Strike and choose To the Death. The remaining points would go to Walking Fortress to unlock Trust the Steel and Bulwark. The last point I would probably use on Flow of Battle. Constitution can be increased through promoting where Strength cannot and cooldown assistance is welcome.

I'd like to see any other builds for this class.

I have been playing the Legionnaire on Perilous and had to learn the hard way just how squishy he becomes. Your full guard can be taken down within seconds, so everything depends on you generating as much guard as possible while Walking Fortress is on cooldown.

My four abilities were: Shield Wall, Walking Fortress, Unbowed and War Cry.

You run in with a barrier and use War Cry to get full guard. After the barrier and guard is down you can activate Walking Fortress which will fill your guard up again. When you lose it again, you can use Unbowed to fill it up a third time and when that gets taken down you have to rely on Shield Wall until Walking Fortress or War Cry comes off cooldown. While doing that you slash as many enemies as possible to maintain aggro (especially the ones that go after teammates) and occasionally block with Shield Wall. Ideally you should never lose health, since many attacks on Perilous can OHK you.

Wait, you guys don't run Counterstrike? That's probably my favorite Legionnaire skill and I consider mine Perilous ready as soon as I get it (level 13 iirc). Near global taunt that gets full guard yes please. The counter thing sounds nice but honestly isn't what I use it for. Two AoE taunts with the plus 20% party damage to taunted targets is brutal.

I don't envy your party that has to wait ~50s between clears to wait your CD. Or when they have to smoke a cig or something while you kite a boss around a pillar since you just can't tank him yet.

There's an evolution to walking fortress that gets you guard everytime you get hit by an enemy. I'd drop counterstrike. With war cry, walking fortress, and shield wall you ought to be able to survive fairly easily.

CounterStrike, Walking Fortress, War Cry, Payback Strike

I am not squishy on Perilous.  In fact I do not even go down in Perilous.  I have a level 14 mace that only does 140 DPS (crappy) but it heals me 1% of my max health on hit so that I am constantly healing myself.  My level 23 Shield of the emperor is however awesome!

CounterStrike gives full guard, taunts all enemies (team mates will love you for this) and gives you 6 seconds of immunity and auto counters to any enemies attacking you, even at range.  Counterstriker lasts 8 seconds with my level 10 counterstrike ring.

Once Counterstrike ends and is on its 60 second cool down, I use Walking Fortress with its upgrade that gives me an additional 8 seconds of immunity plus builds my guard as I get hit.

Once Walking Fortress runs out, I use War Cry to give me 200% armor bonus for the next 8 seconds plus 20% guard for any enemy around me.  B/c I am controlling the hate of all enemies, this usually fills my guard back up.

If you space them out correctly you are a few seconds away from getting Walking Fortress back by the time you lose your guard on your War Cry.  Use Walking Fortress again and by the time it runs out your counter strike is coming back.  Any hits I take to my health in between all of this is gradually refilled by my mace so that I am constantly at full health.  If any of these are completely out, unyielding will save my booty once every 60 seconds, giving me 5 seconds of immunity which is generally enough time to get counterstrike or walking fortress back.

I specced out of shield wall b/c I do not need it.

I also have the color version of the upgraded legionnaire armor set.  And the 3 passives of turn the blade, turn the bolt, so that you take less melee and ranged damage when attacked to the front combined with the passive skill that you can not get flanked are very, very helpful.

You are right, Counter Strike and Unyielding are definitely better than Unbowed. I would recommend getting Flow of Battle as well though to mitigate the cooldown a bit.
