I like the feature when I was playing an archer but am I right in saying it's a bit pointless for close up action?

Totally agree...

Oh 100% agree. They added it cause it 'worked' in Dark Souls. Issue is Dark Souls doesn't screw your camera, it just makes the camera focus on the target. For whatever reason they decided to make the camera go close to the ground and kills your peripherals. Ultimately I don't use it since it just kinda kills the ability to fight. That said I think there soft-target system works really well, mostly anyway. Sometimes when you want to shoot something, something else will barely get in the way and your target switchs and... yeah.
Anyway, target locks garbage, and if they can, they should patch out the camera angle shifts. It's an artistic angle, not a gameplay angle... its gadda go.

I think the hardest aspect of melee is the fact the hitboxes are so wonky. This is especially annoying when you knock down enemies on stairs and flat out can't hit them.

Lock target is only useful for a melee tank. If you have a target locked, your tank will always face the locked target while using Shield Wall. This is highly useful if you need to keep your shield up while backpedaling away. Without the target lock, your character would turn his back on the tank and get smashed.

dude knocked down enemies are a ****** to hit with auto-attack. Doesn't matter if there at a higher or lower elevation its just a ****** to hit them. I bet you a 2H maul doesn't have that issue since it's all directed 'at' the ground. Just more reason I dislike all the knock down/back crap warriors get. Its like hey not only are they not near you anymore but if they where you couldn't hurt them anyway.
CC aspect can be nice at least, but I just wish it was a stumble effect, not a knock back/down for the vast majority of stuff. They 'do' have a stumble effect that's not a stun, but it's pretty much weapon procs at this point. Should be replacing bulk of abilities.

Lock target on melee is near useless. I have big trouble getting rid of it when I need to switch targets urgently.
