I apologize if this has been asked a hundred times, but I couldn't find any other topics on this.

 

So I understand that the tarot cards for your followers change, but what exactly triggers this and what does it mean? The cards for Dorian and Varric have changed and they look pretty dark now (Varric mourning and a snake about to bite Dorian). Is this a reflection on my followers approval ratings or something? Does anyone have a solid answer, cause so far the only thing I can think of are the follower quests, which is weird because I haven't done Varric's at all yet and his card changed on me after I completed the fade quest with the wardens. Also Solas's card changed on me once, but then it went back to the default card shortly after. I'm also romancing Dorian if that affects anything

It happens when you advance in their questlines. You had a conversation with Dorian and Varric that advanced their companion quests.

Approval is probably tied in as well. I'm pretty sure Cassandra's changed after I romanced her

Cole, if you say he's more of a Spirit, his card will change into a pure white Angelic being.

Iron Bull, if you enforce the qun, will be in formation with many other Qunaris

Dorian will change into either a lone figure if you told his father to bugger off or the snake represents tevinter politics if you encouraged him to go back

Solas's change to a wolf companion next to him, although there is a change with a huge black wolf stalking him.

 

 

The only ones I can remember from my play through, but I thought the cards were a fun, dynamic and interesting way to tackle their quest lines.

They change multiple times. Varric's definitely doesn't stay that way

Not necessarily. Varric's card changed after the quest with Hawke and Alistair into a disturbingly depressing one with the dead in the background, then it changed again after completing his personal quest. So, there can be several changes depending on what happened to the character.
