...a b**ch?  I mean, I understand and agree with her philosophy of 'getting back at arrogant rich people who mistreat those around them', but she's really not that different to them from my observations. She similarly thinks she's kind of better than others, and treats others with needless rudeness - take this paraphrased example of her interacting with Solas:

Solas: <Something Elvish>
Sera: <Fart noise>
Solas: Excuse me?
Sera: Sorry, I only like to talk using real words.

Considering the man's quite polite to you, Sera, was there a reason to mock his passion? No, there wasn't - you did it simply because you could, and believe yourself to be in such a position to judge 'what's appropriate and what's not'. Sera, when it comes down to it, is basically a British Chav. She has good points, but the hypocrisy of her nature seems to escape her, and I doubt she'll have any revelation about it. She's probably the first Bioware companion I'd class as 'consistantly annoying'.

I was disappointed with Sera's writing, sure she made me laugh but I was expecting more substance to her character apart drom being a huge troll. She would fit in nicely on the BSN.

Sera is very hypocritical, a constant contradiction, and it shows as you progress through the game. This isn't necessarily a flaw; it's actually rather refreshing to have a companion who isn't just a variation of a morally just person.

She's low class. But she's intelligent. Still, she refuses to show it, casually adding "an' ****" to the end of what would otherwise be potentially profound statements. She's justifiably scared of magic-- and unjustifiably scared of everything else she doesn't fully understand. She's an elf, but she never considers herself one and persistently distances herself from it. She's a rebel with a cause, though nobody's sure if she even knows what that cause is. She's selfish, short-sighted and fairly arrogant, but she believes herself to be genuinely compassionate and empathetic. She's a woman of action who can't tolerate the sheer amount of discussion that every DA character not named "Sten" seems to love so much. And she loves dragons and qunari. Must be the horns.

She's a flawed personality from a flawed life, a nobody trying to be a somebody and more often than not failing at it. I think the reason I adore her character so much is that she isn't like all of the predictably scripted character types that make their rounds in these companion-quest-centered games-- she has more in common with the friend you make one night at a bar, only to realize later on that she's a few shades of crazy and you can't seem to decide if you still like her or not. Because that's just sort of how most people work.

I was planning to create lesbian character just to romance her since she seems like a fun, but after seeing this and experience Sera's personality first hand. I think I'm going to pass. She's rightfully landed on obnoxious category IMO.

Sorry, love her and when she cracked that at Solas I flat out giggled.

Elvish is a dead language (a large majority of elves are in fact not Dalish) no one cares about and the constant insistence of the Dalish and their like of living in the past should be mocked.

Which is her take on the situation as in how about you lot stop living in the past, join the real world and live in it.

The revelation their gods are in fact not gods and that they have been prancing about in slave marking whilst sneering at people was one the finest gaming moments I have ever had.

I'll acknowledge she can be a real ****** about the whole thing, and her morality can be...well, iffy?

But honestly, my PC has not idea what to do with her. Me? I will love her as we mockingly laugh at the Dalish.

Isn't the fact that it unsettled you so much a testament to the writing itself? A character doesn't have to be likeable to be a well-written character.

I've had one too many similar conversations like this with people I care about, from both sides. I grew up in a slightly Evangelistic family, then moved to probably the most liberal city in the United States after college. These sorts of conversations rarely go well, and someone comes out of it sounding like a total moron.

All I'm saying is that not every character needs to follow a laid out script of growth. I kinda like my companions unlikeable at times. Makes them (somewhat ironically in this case) human.

Because people should respect other people right to their own beliefs, as much as respect their own. The way Sera go on about judging people left and right while thinking that she knew better than anyone speak how respectful and open minded she is.

Because I don't see a reason why she has to be rude and disrespectful to other people. Pardon me, but I find other companions despite their flaws more human than Sera and I still hold my opinion about Sera, and I do believe everyone is entitled to their own opinion anyway.

I never dismissed your opinion.

Or... even acknowledged it, really. I was commenting on the way the character was written and how she was relatable as a result, not whether or not you like her.

Uh, I already know that.

You're being a bit impolite, but I'm not even looking for a fight with anyone here.

Well, pardon people for disliking her character because that how she was written then. This is like you hate Vivienne or Cole because the way their character was written.

She's definitely not one for philosophy, but at least she's something new. I consider Sara a somewhat failed experiment, thought it wasn't my experiment. She's not very relatable, but that's what makes her interesting. It's definitely going to be a 'love it or hate it' sort of character. I personally enjoyed taking her along. Lots of fun, and I'm just glad to see a truly original character; flawed as it may be.

I realized something and had to come back:

What I like most about Sara is that she's honest and loyal. She's not plotting, scheming, or trying to take advantage of your power. Ever. Sure, she's got other flaws that balance that out a bit, but it's a great start. Yes, the "this magic stuff is all just stupid and I don't want to think about it" is off-putting, but is it unrealistic? I know a lot of people who bury their heads in the sand at the first sign of "weird."

She's rude, for sure, but I like her character.  Even my Dalish elf liked her.  She reminds me of a friend I used to know, in that we'd pretty much not agree on a lot of big picture stuff but could otherwise get along and support each other despite that.  It's kind of nice that you can maintain a relationship with Sera as a proud Dalish elf mage, even though she basically loathes the Dalish values and is incredibly afraid of magic.  It's not the most straight forward relationship, but since she is full of contradictions and annoying personality traits which makes it seem more like a real friendship.

I enjoy her as a character because she's genuinely funny. The things she says in dialogue and banter have made me actually laugh out loud in the middle of playing. As a romance however, not really for me.

I kind of enjoy that they made an elf character that isn't all pro everything and anything elf actually. She's like the complete polar opposite of Velanna fron DAO, lol. Being too pro any faction in this game is unwise IMO, and being pro elf/Dalish is especially unwise, having seen the end of the game as well as the end to the Solas romance.

No, I would agree with her. If I'm French(I'm not), and you're American, it would be really rude for me to suddenly say something in French in the middle of the conversation.
