Wow I gotta make a dalish elf does solas still remove them if you are male and have high approval after the whole elf section? Oh and Sera that is simply a low blow and real low blow and a vile one.

It's part of his romance scene, so I'm honestly not sure. He might. Can someone test this?

Here's the full dialogue.

Sera: So, what's going on with your face? You go off with Solas, and now your elfy dealies are gone.

Lavellan: (Chooses option to tell her) They weren't what I thought. Originally, they were slave markings. Solas told me how they were misinterpreted. The meaning changed.

Sera: (snickers)

Lavellan: ...What are you laughing about?

Sera: The Dalish! They don't know anything. *fart noise* I mean, you know now. But they put on all this "real elf" stuff, and I knew it--it's all just fancy dress. Nobody knows anything about "real elves" except they're gone.

Lavellan: (top right option) A mistake doesn't mean it's worthless. We can remember, but also choose to grow.

Sera: There's that "we" stuff again. "We" means "us against them." But I like "them." (chuckling) All those faces. That's just funny.

So...yeah. Blah. Maybe I would've felt differently if there was anyone who actually comforted you. But no, it's just Sera saying "I told you so".

Holy crap. I thought she was just stupid, but that's vile. I can't think of any previous Bioware companion who did something like that, even the nastier ones like Morrigan and Jack.

Seems kinda odd if its only a romance scene considering how much of a big deal the whole elf section is I think I gotta test it.

I like Sera , I mean she's a bit nuts and she's an ass sometimes.

She's someone who grew up in the streets , (well I think ) and that's basically all she knows.

She's not open minded or curious about greater mysteries , she wants to have fun and she doesn't like having an headache about stuff.

So she believes in Andraste/Maker , mostly because I assume that's what she grew up with .But she just wants the Herald to do the job and she wants the world to be just like before. No Dalish gods stuff , no mages , no Cory ...etc.

I think it was fun playing a Dalish and interracting with her , because she can't stand the Dalish and what they believe in.

Spoiler

Well, that's the thing. Those two had deep seated issues and part of why I liked them so much was because they became better people the more you interacted with them.

I quite like Sera. She reminds me of the main character of a book series that I read as a kid. Endearingly silly and immature.

As for her reaction to the dalish markings thing... not gonna like, I was amused by the whole situation myself. These things that the dalish mark themselves with that, in a way, give them a sense of superiority over the city elves because the elves in the city know nothing of their supposed ~culture~... are actually slave markings. Like congratulations, you royally buggered up your history lessons somewhere along the line and now you wear slave markings mistakenly for ~elven pride~. Where's your sense of smug superiority now bungholes.

Admittedly, I hate the dalish myself so...

You know what? I do find it kind of cathartic that those uppity Dalish had something they take so seriously ("Would not part with it any more than [their] own children" from DA2 comes to mind) turn out to be a symbol of everything they hated.

I'm curious... what does Sera unlock for the Inquisition besides the jar of bees? Honestly, the jar of bees doesn't interest me that much and the more I read this thread, the more I'm considering of passing her over entirely. That's a first for me - I'm a "recruit all the things" type, and yet she rubs me in all the wrong ways.

I kept her in my first playthrough, just threw her out in my second. And never before have I thrown out a companion, I even kept Merril after all her blood magic crap. She's just too much

It is highly ironic, and show the Dalish actually know very little, but rubbing it in the face of someone who's supposed to be your friend? No, that's just petty and low. I'm not going to recruit her on my subsequent playthroughs.

The Dalish markings are whatever symbols that the Dalish want them to be. They are no longer markings of slavery, but of their freedoms and pride in modern times. This revelation does not diminish the markings.

That's also a good point. The meanings of symbols change all the time, and I suppose the Dalish would still wear them like a badge of honour once they found out.

Some people say that a char that evokes emotion even if its hatred is well written. i find this only partially true. This char is meant to be a comic relief char and she fails and fails hard. i dont find the humour funny and i rather have somebody else taking the spot.

Honestly, from now on I'm picking Sera up for the bees, keeping her for the experience from her class quest, and then kicking her out. I have never done that to any Bioware companion before. Usually for the ones I strongly dislike, I can find something likeable or respectable or something that makes them worth keeping on, but I can't find anything about Sera.

Hell, I'll put up with even Morinth or Wynne or Anomen because of their skill in combat. But my favorite class is a Tempest Archer, meaning it's the one I'll most likely play. Meaning I do the exact same thing Sera does, except better, so she doesn't even have that going for her.

Yeah the elder one even brings it up during the final battle. I romanced Cullen so I just got yelled at about having slave markings on my face mockingly.

I don't think that any one character in this game really takes the role of comic relief. For all of Sera's shenanigans, some of it just seems to illustrate her erratic behavior and emotional state without attempting to be really funny. I dunno. That's just my interpretation. Other characters had their fair share of comedic moments that outshine hers a great deal.

She was advertised as one however.  and i can see where they where going: comedy with a serious character flaw to keep the person relevant for the setting. You see the elements of it but it but it comes out wrong:the comedy simply isn't their or mature enough, and the char is not interesting or engaging as she talks a lot but it could easily be compressed into a fraction what she is saying. Its rare to see a char that im completely apathetic to. i think this is the first in the entire DA series.

In short its a failed char and i only use it to get extra quests from it.

Also true. I mean, today the cross is a symbol of reverence and faith across the world. Two millenia ago it was a Roman torture and execution device. I don't think one is more true than the others.

Of course, for Solas it's different since he knows exactly what the original symbol means and is unlikely to ever move past it. And it's still an understandable shock as a Dalish to find out what a core symbol of your identity used to mean.

My main problem with Sera was her overly simplistic view of literally everything as far as the world goes. And not just that, but how stubborn and vehement she was about it. I felt like the only reason she and my Inquisitor didn't get along was because my Inquisitor simply saw the bigger picture--she had to as the leader of a huge organization. By the end of the game I still had no idea why she was with the Inquisition other then 'to make things go back to normal'. It's like she was meant to be the puckish rouge but failed because she lacked the worldliness that that kind of character needs to be effective.

And, playing from the perspective of a Dalish elf, I felt insulted a couple times by just how flippant Sera was of everything elvish when she's an elf.

I'm curious. Does the scene from the trailers that has Sera walking through a field to find a dead elf surrounded by corpses actually show up ingame?

Her somber expression would have been a nice reprieve from inane cackling or petulant anger.

Were I in this situation... my preferred reaction would be to whip out the Anchor, propose that it can likely open Fade rifts in addition to closing them, and then threaten to throw Sera into it and seal it behind her.

Sera being a waste of space in my roster that I literally never want to use again is a success? That's a valuable roster spot that could be filled with a character that actually deserves to be there.

This is the exact same way I feel about Alistair. He literally spent all his time in the Party Camp playing with his dolls until his plot armor forced him on me. So, who could I replace him with again? Oh yeah, Loghain, at the end of the game, and guess what, I did it every time. The moral to the story? Just because I don't like a character doesn't mean they are a waste of space, considering how much "squee" Alistair gets, eh?

But let's take this comparison a bit farther, shall we?

Petty: Reading this thread, it's apparent that people see Sera this way. Can we point out any instances of Alistair being petty? The short answer is yes, and a good example of that is selecting the surprised answer to "I'm Maric's son". "I can't marry you because you're not human". Hmm, seems like one of the "popular" characters in the lore shares a lot in common with Sera, only, it seems, he gets a pass because reasons.

This appears to be the main reason that people don't like Sera (to me anyway, I don't wish to generalise if that isn't the case) but that's the whole point. Sera hates people who think that they're better then others and she wants to leave the past in the past whereas the Dalish DO think that they're better then others BECAUSE of a past culture that they barely remember. The conversation about the vallaslin proves that she is right despite all the talk of flat ears and real elves.

That's not all, there are lots of revelations at the Well of Sorrows that show that the Dalish really don't have a clue about their past. The sad part of this, I'm actually Pro-Elf in the lore, but even I can't ignore the things that I learned there.
