I can't have her in my game , did it twice, to be sure. Her whole dialog boils down to "Stupid, beats down, coin, haha." Closed minded, money grubbing snot is what she is. Then that prank bit - hello, a fortress amid a war is hardly the time or place for stupidity so no I never let her do it. I want my people a content as possible, not pissed off at some stupid mustard wearing chit. Then she goes and threatens to kill me - oh no, get lost is not enough, you need to be put in the stocks for insubordination, Sera.

You people need to really chill out, learn to take a joke, and understand that characters need to be flawed and complex. They can't all be there to please you, agree with you, and behave like clones. When they are like that, that is when they are just flat out boring, and the whole story is pretty weak as it is.

 

I can understand disagreeing, but the amount of hate I see directed at characters like Sera and Vivienne is just toxic and gross and goes beyond just disagreeing. There are characters I disagree with, but I'm not about to unleash endless, repetitive posts of violence, death threats, and ways to really super humiliate these characters. I just appreciate that they exist at all to introduce some conflict. 

 

All these characters have their positive and negative sides. The fact they don't seem to develop much and remain stagnant really sucks, but they are by far one of the most varied and unique bunch of random misfits Bioware has put out there.

 

It's like everyone was expecting Sera to be another leliana/liara/tali/merrill. All cute, innocent, girly and polite. Then she was a lesbian and made a fart joke and oh god, we can't have that. Women farting is a no no enough as it is.

I thought about kicking Sera out of the inquisition, but I figured that she would eventually stop being so judgemental and grow up.

 

Then again, i'm not exactly any better... I played a character that was neutral towards the Qun (not bringing my DA2 hatred for them into DAI) but I wanted to declare war on the Qun after they attacked Iron Bull. I might even have been willing to team up with Corypheus just to exterminate them at that point.

 

I do however wish that BioWare had made it possible for her to become more open minded regarding the possibility of there actually being elven "gods", regardless of how little she wants them to exist.

A well-written post, OP, and your observations are correct.

She's the Dragon Age equivalent of a British chav (and I'm not jumping on the halla cart; I'm British, and I have encountered these mythical beings, lol). 

She's prone to inverted snobbery. She automatically assumes that the people she perceives to be "big hats" are looking down on her, so she adopts a pre-emptive, defensive attitude and "retaliates" before anyone has actually said a wrong word to her.

She doesn't realize that she's being a hypocrite a lot of the time, that she's looking down on people who are as just as much a product of their own circumstances as she is.

I don't dislike her, but I do often find it difficult to find common ground with her. Whenever I speak to her, I feel like an adult trying to humour an unruly child who thinks she knows it all already.

(P.S. BioWare seems to be aware of Sera's ability to irritate, too, because she's the only companion character whom you can kick out of the Inquisition at any time using an option that's always on the main dialogue wheel. lol)

I'm more frustrated at the fact that you can't point out her mistakes in your conversation.

 

She says something really dumb and arrogant, and all the Inquisitor says is "Why do you feel like that?"

I like Sera a lot and if she does turn out to be a vessel for Andruil (goddess of the hunt) then her actions would make so much more sense. Not that they have to mind you, I just like the idea of having such a twist. I  Her rudeness about eleven culture , her denial and refusal to accept things will be quite sad if the theory is true. Solas and Cole drop hints that suggest they know what's up, her skill as an archer despite no training, her foggy memory, the hints are everywhere if you look for them.

I would say her character's more interesting if they don't go with the 'elven god' thing to explain her behavior.

I agree that's why I'm happy with either. Like I said I really like Sera I just thought it was a good theory.

She can be elven god, i think it would add  great deal of irony, but her being a god in no way should be used as explanation for her behavior. Her being a god and her having the personality she has are two different things.

Nah. I think she's well-written, but I feel the same is true for most other companions as well. The only companions that I feel are a bit tepid are Varric (sadly), Josephine and Iron Bull.

Yeah I have been thinking about this a lot and agree. I think that is why Solas is always "testing" her by speaking elvish etc... It's like he is looking for a sign that her Elvhen soul is awakening or something

I think it's one of the better fan theories I've seen (that's not saying much since most of them end up wrong XD).

 

I'm still quite skeptical of it.  The only thing that gets me was one of Sera's banters with Solas:

 

Sera: (shivers) Weird.

Solas: Sera? What are you feeling?

Sera: Ugh, here we go. It’s nothing, it just feels like I've seen this. Exactly this. It happens.

Solas: Not to everyone.

Sera: It’s not an elf thing. You’re not shaking.

Sera: I suppose now you’ll switch to how I’m the same but different?

Solas: You are different. You are the furthest from what you were meant to be.

Sera: Well I’ve definitely heard ****** like this before. Hmph!

 

My theory is that Sera has a connection to the Fade that's stronger than the average non-mage but not strong enough for her to actually be a mage (I'm thinking of magic potential as more of a continuum than a binary 'yes or no').  But this banter raises some doubt for me there since Sera notices that Solas (an elf and a mage) isn't shaking and she'll say the same thing if the Inquisitor is an elf.  Then Solas goes on to point out that Sera's different and not what she's meant to be. So, what was she meant to be?  A mage?  Then wouldn't he feel the same thing as she (or a mage Inquisitor)? It's just weird...I could be looking too far into this, ofc.

I don't think the main problem with Sera, as a character, comes from the fact that she is so annoying, closed minded, infantile, constantly rude with her answers and many times, plain gross. I think the problem I see with her is that she doesn't show any sign of development throughout the entire game. She seems to stay immersed in her 12 y/o chav personality no matter what happens in the game. No female character has to be written "all cute, innocent, girly and polite" to be likeable. I don't see the correlation between being lesbian and making fart jokes. I have many lesbian friends and to be honest, many of them are more girly and polite than some of my heteresoxual female friends.

 

I must agree that if making Sera like that, was the original intention of the writer, then she is a extremely well written character. Would that make me like her more? I don't think so. Would that fact persuade me to keep her in my personal version of the inquisition's team? No way. If I want to be around people that annoys me, I could invite a couple of my colleagues to hang out (you know, just to keep my experiences diverse) . At the same time, I would totally understand if other players would love her and feel she is indispensable as a companion in every quest.

 

At the end of the day, she is one out of several options as a companion. If I don't like her around, I can always ignore her completely or even kick her out of the inquisition (which I personally do in all my playthroughs).

What joke? At plenty of times Sera can be a really stupid and mean-spirited ****** and people are allowed to criticize her for that. She really does inspire the vitriol that she does. Its not that she refuses to be a "yes-man" for us, its that she refuses to consider any argument or evidence that contradicts her personal limited viewpoint. It seems your real problem is that people dislike Sera at all.
