Varric uses the same skillset as an archer rogue this time so its not a slam dunk.  There's no "Bianca" tree.   And artificer spec is not as good as Tempest spec.  (Varric is an artificer; Sera is a Tempest).  And you can craft bows that are pretty damn good.

Sera was alright for a while. A little eccentric, but I thought it was cool that you could agree to disagree with her and she gave you approval points for it. That improved my opinion of her. And she has some funny banter with some of my favorite characters.

...and then last night happened.  She literally goes on a raving tantrum about the Maker versus worshiping multiple gods, calling anyone stupid for believing in multiple gods (calls you stupid for suggesting that there might be some truth to the lore), and goes so far as to call the people that had many gods 'demon worshipers'.

I get having characters that are individuals with different viewpoints (although the game has been doing a good job of making sure I know that most of my companions are good 'Andraste-ians' - is it trying to tell me something?), but that was the most unappealing dialogue I've ever encountered. It's absolutely petulant, childish name-calling.

I'd seriously like to have a word with whoever thought that was a good idea to write. .

She was written by the same person as Aveline. Enough said.

so she does have a thing for qunari? im playing as a female qunari thats romancing her and like i told her i loved her and it was super sweet in my opinion, nothing too marriagy. She had her own way of saying it. Yes she can be like "really?" sometimes but most of the time shes silly and sweet in her own ways, or at least when you romance her..... the cookies were adorable.

Honestly there are plenty of religious people I've come across IRL that are just like Sera was in that scene. It actually almost exactly mirrored a conversation I once had in real life except in the place of elven Gods we were talking about evolution. I don't mean to suggest that my personal experiences are indicative of all religious people or anything and I know that there are plenty of devout people who are also perfectly capable of having a rational discussion without dismissing things as "stupid" because it doesn't fit with their beliefs, but there are definitely plenty of people out there who are like Sera, and I think it actually kind of makes sense for Sera to be like that when you consider her background.

Sera is a little oozing pile of wasted potential, and a poor omen of things to come for companions with set orientations.

And Carver, but they both are far superior character and a lot more human than Sera IMO.

I'm curious as to why you feel that her personality and sexual orientation are somehow related to one another, and indicates any kind of direction BioWare will be going with companions in the future. Her character would be totally unchanged if she was bi, straight or whatever. In any case, "set" is not a proper term I'd use to describe it. Sexual orientation is what it is. It's not in some state of flux like the sex of the dinosaurs on Isla Nublar or something. Anyway, Dorian shouldn't be dismissed.

But then again, maybe it's cuz she doesn't really have much respect for the elfiness :P

I just said it's an omen, not necessarily a solid indicator. I'm largely depressed about her total lack of character growth and out-of-nowhere religious zealotry, and feeling a bit shafted by the romance options in general.

Did you try them all already to judge the content, or are you simply objecting to the face value of them?

I finished Josephine's and was informed by spoiler content that Sera's would be doomed if I stayed in-character.

Sera stands pretty much against anyone who'd lord power or superiority over others, and make them feel inferior. Humans do it, and the dalish do it to other elves. Dwarves do it to anyone who doesn't live underground, and the qunari she just doesn't know enough about yet to really go full on against.

It takes a lot of strength, bravery, and yes more then a few screws lose to pick and ideal of nobody treating others as inferior and apply it to everyone, including groups she'd normally be welcome in. You find her behavior to be abhorent because she disrespected solas talking to her in elvish, but maybe consider from her point of view, solas might as well have gone, "This is a noble language thats thousands of years old and was the tongue of your people. You probably never heard of it."

Or she did it cause it was funny, and she values the really simple pleasures in life.

Which is why she can't name Red Jenny but says it's lots of people. She doesn't get it it directly from the man, she deals with low level dealers.

Charles Manson exists in real life too, but that doesn't mean I want him in my party.

I think she's bat crap crazy, but it makes for a refreshing change from the nice guy murderers (Cullen, The Iron Bull, Blackwall, Cassandra).

Frankly, I don't really like most of these companions (nor the "character" you can give your inquisitor), but I didn't much in DA2 either (but that was mostly because Hawke simply outshone them, especially if going for "funny"). Altho Bull and Dorian are usually good for a few laughs. I love how they approve when you just kill random pockets of venatori - that makes me feel all shiny inside.

Good god so many people tripping over themselves at the sight of a more independent woman. Ick.

As to the dialogue well pretty much no one talks like anyone in the DA universe so... I'd say that's a wash.

It has nothing to do with being a more independent woman.

Cassandra is also a strong woman. Hell even though I can't stand Viviene I still like her character and she is also a strong woman. Sera is just insane and my inquisitor doesn't have time for loose cannon's like her when he is trying to lead an organization as important as the inquisition.

The fact you hate her so much is **WHY** she's a good character.

Characters are good when you either hate them or love them.  Doesn't matter which category you fall into or why only that it happens.  **THAT'S** why they're good.  It's the characters that make you feel "meh, take 'em or leave 'em" that are forgettable.  The one's that annoy or inspire are the ones you never forget.  Whether you like Sera or not, you'll never forget her that's for damn sure.

Kinda like Joffrey from GoT.  99% of the world hates that kid.  Why?  Because he did an AMAZING job selling it.

This is so patronizing...

Uhhh... no, some writers might like to tell themselves this when people hate there characters. People can dislike a badly written character.... Joffery was well written, most people who watch GoT know he is well written while also thinking he is totally evil.

my opinion of her flipped and flopped just like her opinion, and at the end I felt about her in the same way as I could understand her: Not at all. I couldn't make heads or tails of her.

I'm starting to think Sera is half human. She is much bigger and thicker than all the elves I've seen so far and her face doesn't look like it fits on her skull properly.lol

Not how it works. The children of mixed parents are always human in DA.

her character would completely change if bi or straight. It'd allow different players to see her in a different freaking light. When you enter a relationship with some one, you typically see their truer side, or more of their purer personality. when the guy who doesn't enjoy playing a female characters doesn't want to replay through the whole game to see if she's a good personality or not, then it does, in fact, ruin the character.
