N.B. There is a lot of self irony here (just wanted to let you all know, so it doesn't get misunderstood)

At first (since i didn't even know of such things), I was more than a little upset to find out that there were books that is almost a necessity for playing Dragon Age -for someone like me, that is ;-)

Edit (to make things clear - a 'shorty' of what's in the spoiler): That is really fascinating, to me, that Bioware's games makes me so involved in the games, up to the point I get upset - and, to me, it speaks volumes about Bioware, in a very good way.

Edit again: Maybe we aren't allowed to talk about the books here at all? If so, I'm sorry. I didn't mean anything bad. Just wanted to see how others felt. :-)

Aaa, oops, sorry, got carried away and managed to get Off Topic - in my own thread - immediately  (so…putting that in a spoiler)

Spoiler

Anyway *cough*cough* the books…
I've calmed down about the matter now - I certainly hope...

I have read three of the books now, but I do know there are other books that are out there. Then there are comic books as well (which I don't think I'd like to read….but if it is a 'must', I will try to force myself, because I do love the lore in Dragon Age).

These are the books that I've 'read' so far:
by David Gaider

  • Dragon Age: The Stolen Throne
  • Dragon Age: The Calling
  • Dragon Age: Asunder

1) What other, actual books (non-comic books) are there?

2) Are all the books available as audio books? (I'm Swedish, and I live in Sweden, but I am more than happy to listen to them in English)

3) Are there (please say No) any 'must' read comics for someone like me?

4) And last, a question directed at David Gaider, if you ever get to read this thread (I saw you've been on the forums so I'm taking a shot here). How did you feel about the audio books?

I felt the narrator was great, although I got taken by surprise when he talked as young Duncan the first time (I laughed out loud, it was great).

--------

(this, below, is not a must read to answer my question, but if you feel like; we could talk about the books, or please guide me to another thread where it might already be) ;-)

(Spoiler Alert):
The three books I've read are really good books, I think, and you get to now the background, the lore, personalities etc., in a way I wish it would be implemented in the games.

Personally, I think both The Stolen Throne and Asunder is a 'must' (again; I'm speaking only for myself here now) before playing DAI, especially Asunder, but nah, I believe both actually.

And… I really do think Asunder should have been the game instead of DA2 - or both, together, but there was a timeline, so I understand more now, or at least I believe I think I understand how it can't, or couldn't be done.

e.g. I get to know Cole (he's/it's already a favorite of mine), Fiona (very interesting), and I got a better understanding of Wynne (since I didn't care for her much in DAO, so I have at least loosen my somewhat harsh feelings against her)

What do you feel/think re: the books and the (to me) importance of knowing things like this before DAI - or future Dragon Age games?

Please share. :)

There are two more books:

  • The Masked Empire by Patrick Weekes
  • Last Flight by Liane Merciel

Reading the Last Flight before DAI doesn't really bring anything to the table, as it's pretty removed from the main action (although it does have implications for possible future titles), but The Masked Empire is pretty essential to DAI, as it really details the beginning of the Orlesian Civil War and the conflict between Celene/Gaspard/Briala, and also introduces a couple of mysteries about elven lore that are addressed in DAI.

I don't know if they are available as audiobooks or not.

As for comics I wouldn't say that any of them are essential, since they aren't canon (unlike the books, which are canon with some reservations).

Quite emotional but Why get upset at Bioware for not putting up a message saying read the books first? If they did people will scream "money grabbers"

Btw all the books and comics are listed on the dragon age wiki or even Wikipedia, that's how I found them.

Oh no, it wasn't that I got upset about. I'm not online that very much, and I'm playing on Xbox, so I felt "Why books?" "What is this?" "Why not in-game, or as a DLC" and then the feelings came. I need to try to re-phrase that, because that was certainly not my intent. Thank you for enlightening me. :)

For me Masked Empire is a bit confusing, because Celene's troops are more or less defeated by Gaspard's army and she has to flee. In Inquisition she still seems to have absolute power, e.g. her word is enough to condemn Gaspard.

...hmm... I can't remember correctly now, but I do know they mentioned something about Gaspard ....I can't exctly recall but something like "Gaspard is letting go of Celene now" -someone said in asunder (not exactly like that but something...) I really do remember that it was something because I got curious and wanted to know more. ;-)

Fact is, that Celene's army is defeated by Gaspard's army in the book. A ruler without an army is powerless. In Inquisition it is the opposite. Celene the powerful ruler and Gaspard the powerless rival.

Oh, I think I misunderstood in which order they are.   Thank you Bfler. Yes that is rather strange. (and also...Leliana is, in some people's play-throughs, dead - yet, she lives here in DAI... But maybe there is an explanation for that, somewhere or sometime... I remember reading about people having issues with Zevran popping up in DA2, despite being dead in some ppl's play-throughs, but then I never checked that up so I don't know how it went)

edit: tired, mixing up games now. It would have been rather funny though, if Zevran popped up in ME2 out of nowhere. My FemShep would have to choose. Oh Garrus... hahaha

edit2: I have gotten the answers, thank you for all the help :-) and I do not want to risk anything, so I' m going to ask a moderator to lock this thread now. Thank you all :-) ...I just reported myself lol. well, I'm off anyway. Need some rest. Have fun everyone. :-)
