So I was just chatting with a friend and she said that she doesn't like those bears in the game that keep showing up and making life hard. I've played my rogue for 12+ hours and have reached level 9. I am playing on normal. I've been to Val Royeaux once and recruited Sera and got the Storm Coast unlocked and went there too. I haven't done the horse quest in the Hinterlands yet because I was busy doing other stuff. Still, I have discovered nearly all of the map in the Hinterlands and still haven't encountered any bears. Is that a bug? I mean, I don't want any bears but I am wondering.

They are in Hinterlands for sure. South part of the map.

Bears are unrealistically tougher than many demons in the game. Three bears is as epic a battle as a dragon, imo.

Hinterlands bears? Bah. Just wait until you get to the Emerald Graves! And yeah, only dragons are tougher than bears.

I don't know what bears in Emerald Graves eat, but it's some good stuff.

I've unlocked all of the south map of the Hinterlands. The only thing that is actually still undiscovered is to the far north west. I was wondering if those bears do show up after you've finished a particular quest or if they are part of the environment from the beginning because so far I haven't seen a single one. I did have a rather epic battle with a Druffalo that I had the brilliant idea to attack with my daggers when I was level two and roaming around outside of Haven. It was long and hilarious and kind of pathetic on my part really but hilarious regardless.

so yes, why don't I encounter any bears?

Was hunting for Ram meat just now and got attacked by a bear and three wolves, glad I saved right before it happened. I avoid them whenever I can

Wait until you unlock Emprise du Lion. They have Great Bears. They are bears. But bigger. :D

Wolves also have unrealistically high HPs imo. I can take down a pride demon in a few seconds, while a pack of wolves takes twice as long.

Bears have personal-based area effect attacks. It's terrifying how much punishment they can soak up... spell after spell, magic blast after magic blast, fire and flames, ice and lightning. All while Cassandra hacks at it with her sword, Varric pelts it with arrows and #4 flings spells or arrows at it. Second bear shows up... OH MY GOD!

Takes so long to kill bears even of the same level... not very heroic :)

@J4N3_M3, I would send you all the bears that populate my game if I could. At level 10 I barely manage to kill a pack of these vile beasts and they respawn almost immediately right behind my back. They even have the nerve to attack me right in the camp shortly after I fast-travel there! At least the dragons will be a cakewalk after all the embearassment

Yeah, the Emerald Graves area has them too. I had some experience with normal bears in the Hinterlands, so when I saw the name "Great Bear", I immediately went "Oh sh*t". Let's just say they keep the promise of their name. I rate one Great Bear at least equivalent to a complete rift of the same level. That includes the pride demons you get at L15-16 and up.

By the way, best tactics to deal with bears is to Fleshfire/Horror it and run the hell away.

Or target them with a Knight Enchanter and whack away. Problem is, the rogues tend to draw more aggro and these bears are less easily distracted than other enemies. They keep coming at their selected target for much longer before taunts or proximity makes them reconsider.

Exactly that. But since i romance Cass i'm actually thinking "My dear, could you please taunt that bear for me?"

I find it hard to believe that I have been accidentally avoiding those bears in over 12 hours of gameplay in the Hinterlands and the Storm Coast. So yes, really, what is up with that? I mean, if I don't get those bears because I didn't do a particular mission, that's a good thing because I can try to avoid them in future runs.

For what it's worth, I only started to encounter bears when I explored the western edges of the Hinterlands map in search of new camps. While fighting one of them, I turned around to find that a second one had eaten Vivienne while I was distracted. She's really not cut out for life outside the big city.

There was a river mouth area in Storm Coast that was spawning Pairs of Bears at an alarmingly high frequency last night.  Like, respawn just as I'm finishing looting the ones I just killed.  With mercs thrown in just for good measure.  Of course, there's a camp not far away, so it made for some great farming.  I probably spent an hour or so farming Bear Hide.  Got some Fade-Touched.

Edit: Speaking of tough non-boss fights, how about Judith's mission in Crestwood.  I did that last night and was severely disappointed not to have a dialogue option, "******, you told me there was a wyvern, not three of them!"

I seem to encounter a ton of bears right around the camp right by the lake in the Hinterlands as well as in the...oh, it's called something to do with 'Avaar Blades,' I think. Where you fight those ridiculous bandits who are randomly blocking the road with their 'fancy' camp. Though if you kill about three, maybe four, I've noticed the bear population takes a steep dive and they seem less likely to just run up and act like you're a free meal.

The thing I find most annoying is the 'Leaping Shot' skill. Varric and Sera have both done really stupid things with that: jumping off cliffs/bridges and wasting a full health bar to down one of those precious healing potions and leaping into range of a third bear...not a second bear, oh no!...the third bear. Thanks for that, Varric. Obviously the 'Tale of the Inquisitor' was getting boring, or something. ;D

The southwestern camp/travel point in Hinterlands has always been bear central for me.  Every time I ever traveled to that camp for any reason there were two bears just waiting to pounce.  They don't even wait for me to interact with the potion stand.

Not sure why you're bearless.  I'd bear with it though.  Eventually they'll give you pause.

B)  Bears... I look at them and wonder how can those weaklings in the fade survive here in Thedas. They are the true defenders of Thedas imo.

That is why when I spot the great defender of thedas, I usually circle around them out of.... respect. :P
