Just got through this arc and made my decision.  My choice was:

Hawke (F) or Loghain. I left Hawke behind because:

1) She had a personal vendetta vs Corypheus, and was to blame for his release
2) Her greatest fear was not meaningfully impacting the world, and this was her chance
3) Her words rung absolutely true - Loghain's penance was to rebuild the Wardens, not to die with his order

 

As a result,

Varric Greatly Disapproved. His tarot card on the party selection screen became a much more dreadful version - is this solely a result of the story choice, or is this generally what occurs when disapproval gets low? I'm focusing on his inner circle quests now in an effort to preserve him as a member of the Inquisition.

 

 

What were your choices, who did you choose and why, and what were the immediate consequences?  I haven't advanced the main story past this point, so please don't spoil anything that comes later in the game.

I saved Hawke and left Stroud in the fade. Varric approved a lot. Actually, I don't think he disapproved a single time in my game. I also hadn't let him keep the red lyrium shard in DA2. The tarot card still changed, it was red and Varric was holding his crossbow looking in pain, with ghosts in the background. It changed again to a much less disturbing one after I completed a quest for him.
