Does Krem have a purpose in the game other than being the transgender character? I'm only 40 something hours in but I feel like he is just like the pilot from ME3, there just so Bioware can say "look what we put in our game, praise us for it". Is he important to the story at all? I don't mind at all that there is a trans character in game, I'm just hoping there is more of a point to him other than to prove how open minded bioware is. So far it seems like they did such a poor job including him into the game world.

Have you done Bull's personal quest yet. (The answer is yes, he does have a purpose.)

He's a dude The Maker saw fit to give girl parts to. What's so hard to understand?

That makes the Maker a bit of an arseh*le, doesn't it?

Anyway, I never really thought about Krem's identity, outside of the dialogue pick where the Inquisitor can ask Krem if Krem is a man or a woman. I mean, I know that Krem is, biologically speaking, a woman, but he identifies as a man. Beyond that, I think Krem is actually pretty interesting. He isn't afraid to get into the thick of a fight, and has great banter with Bull. I wish there was more of Krem, to be honest.

I liked krem really thought he added to bull's character both to him and on his own. I saw him as a man (well teenager actually) at first then came his gender topic and it honestly didnt change my opinion of him if anything i found him more interesting it sucks he did have more dialog(not that i didnt find him interesting before)

Gender = Social Construct

Sex = Biological

Krem's Sex = Female

Krem's Gender = Male

You don't call Krem a woman, girl, chick, label him with female pronouns or any of that. For all intents and purposes, in social situations, you call Krem a man. You must use male pronouns when talking about Krem. Anything otherwise is insensitive to his identity and warrants a dropkick from Bull.

I wonder if the people who claims that Krem identifies as a man and hence is a man even know that by doing so they are indirectly perpetuating gender stereotypes.

"This is how a man lives his life, Krem lives and identifies as a man hence Krem is a Man." The blatant gender traits classification is obvious. By claiming that Krem is male through the way Krem lives and through what Krem perceives life to be, there is a basic idea by people who think that way of how a man should behave and likewise how a woman should.

Which indirectly solidifies all this gender prejudice people have been trying to shake off for generations.

And as many have mentioned here, how do you "live like a man" or "live like a woman"? Is there a standard for defining whether one lives like either a man or a woman?

This whole issue of identifying a person as either man or woman is the reason why gender equality doesn't exist. People already have preconceived notions of what traits makes a man or woman.

I feel fairly sure that Gwendoline Christie was originally going to voice Krem, but it didn't work out for whatever reason. Maybe her voice wasn't androgynous enough.

You can tell by the tweets she made on the subject. #hornsup , etc.

Oh yeah, I forgot that she was supposed to be voicing a character.  Yeah, if she made vague Charger references, I'd put my money down that she was originally lined up to voice Krem.  Shame that didn't work out.  Hale is great and all, but it would have been nice to have Gwendoline in the game too.  Mostly so I could take Vivienne to meet Krem.....

You MUST use male pronouns when talking about Krem.

Don't be one of those people.

You live like a man by identifying as a man and telling everyone that you are a man.  Oh, and asking people to call you a man and use male pronouns.  That's what people are talking about when saying 'living as a man'.  It has nothing to do with his profession.

Krem is a man, he explains it pretty well in game.

For the life of me, I cannot trigger this conversation. What gives...

Krem is a guy, but I can understand the confusion from those who have never experienced the sensation of being a different sex/gender than what the body they inhabit says they are.

You might think, just because Krem fights and sits like a dude does not make Krem a dude. Well, duh!

What makes Krem a dude is the fact that deep down in his soul (and chemically/psychologically, in his brain), Krem feels he is a dude.

That could be really hard to wrap your head around if you were, say, born in a female body and feel you are female. It is just hard to comprehend how someone could feel differently.

And it isn't just about "feeling." It is about knowing.

I know I am agender/genderless. It is just who I am. It's cool, cause it's me! Krem's cool because he's him. He seems to handle lugging that female body around better than I do. There are days when you just wish you could cut bits of yourself off. Or wish you could rip out the bits that just aren't you from the inside out. It is what it is. It's beautiful to see Krem just being himself and hanging out with his bros (and sister-bros lol).

It happens when you get Bull's approval high enough.  It's one of the first cut scenes with him once you get him to like you (I didn't get it until I killed the dragon in the Hinterlands, which he loved).  He'll take you to meet the rest of the Chargers and you can talk to Krem at that point.  Then, once that scene's over, you can have one-on-one discussions with Krem about it in the Inn.

Ah I see. I have zero gauge on where my approval is for everyone. :/

I was level 12 when I took on the dragon and it gave Bull a ton of approval.  Plus there were a few dialogue options afterwards that gave a little more.

Are you referring to that dragon in the Hinterlands - the one not too far east(ish) of Redcliff?

He is my intended romance and all I get is "Hey, boss" -_- Arsehole! I am not ready to kill a dragon just yet, so I'm going for the Adamant Fortress quest. Hopefully he will like me enough to talk to me after that :(

If it makes you feel better, he was one of the later ones for me as well.  The only ones who gave me companion quests after him were Sera and Cole.  Well, technically just Sera because I'm 65 hours into the game and level 20 and still haven't gotten a single companion quest from Cole.  My thoughts on that?

Actually the idea that Krem just doesn't feel he should have female parts is much easier to wrap my head around than the idea that he just wants to "live as a man" (whatever that means). I'm glad you affirmed that Krem fighting and sitting/dressing a certain way isn't what makes him a dude. Thanks for sharing your insight into this.

Sorry that makes even less sense.

Just because you think you are something doesn't mean you are it. Demanding people to acknowledge or treat you in a certain manner certainly doesn't change anything.

If that were the case, everybody could technically be whoever they think they are but are they really? Extrapolating that concept, if a kid identifies as superman, tells everyone he is superman does that make him superman?

Does he live as superman?

Same logic, applied to a more extreme scenario.

That said, I'd rather much prefer to describe that Krem is living Krem's own life by Krem's standards rather than classifying Krem as "living like a man" or "living like a woman" with the justification of "because he says so." or "he identifies as such." Some fundamental facts don't change and denying such facts would be akin to denying identity or values embodied.

Krem could be a person who would rather have different genitals and that should be embraced, part of Krem's identity or existence. But denying and ignoring the fact that Krem is biologically a female will deny Krem's very own identity itself.

Frankly, it doesn't matter if it 'makes sense' to you.  It's a personal thing that it's in people's heads.  I just know to respect people's wishes and not constantly nitpick at what people say about it.

Not to get too off topic but...

To the people talking about chromosomes and genitalia being the defining trait of male/female I would like to direct you to these links:

I hope this thread doesn't end badly.
