Are there feminists who thought that the whole self-petting nipple-chains thing as the incarnation of wicked desire was problematic and ill conceived? Absolutely. I am one of them. But did I get the coven together and use the magic power of our feminism to bend the poor helpless game developers to our will? Don't be absurd. Or, rather, stop being absurd.
If you want to "imagine" what happened imagine that, for example, David Gaider went on the record saying: "The difference between sexy and sexualized… Sexy is good, but I think that a lot of people, they have a sexualized character and they think, 'That’s sexy. Everyone should think that’s sexy and think that’s a good thing to look at.' It becomes this pattern across the industry. That’s when it becomes an issue. So yeah, these things do have to be individually challenged." Actually, don't imagine that, remember it. It happened almost two years ago. Now apply that kind of thinking to Ms. Nipple-Chains.
It's time to stop imagining that some all-powerful cabal, the feminist illuminati, is manipulating this unwilling multi-billion-with-a-B dollar industry. It's time to stop imagining that I'm putting the thumbscrews to the Ray Muzyka right after I get the kids to bed and making him put a sweatshirt on the Desire Demon. Things aren't changing because of some ridiculous conspiracy, things are changing because more and more people are coming to reject institutionalized privilege and to prioritize inclusion and equity. This is a good thing.
And you had better get used to it. It's not going away.
I asked a simple question, and I guess that made you angry. I'm sorry. I'm not sure exactly what I can address here; a lot of it feels too emotionally charged and combative.
I will address one point, however. You say, "...and to prioritize inclusion and equity[sic]." First off, I assume you meant to type "equality" (trust me, I've made way worse typos!), but if not then please disregard this next part.
If inclusion and equality is the goal, why is the complete and utter removal of the concept the acceptable solution? To be honest, I find nudity in games to be weird and awkward, so I'd actually prefer the art design of desire demons to be changed as well. Like another poster mentioned, I think it would have been neat if desire demons could take different forms of desire. There would be "seductive" versions (male, too), there would be versions that look like someone you've lost, perhaps a rich-looking person to entice the desire for wealth, etc.
But rather than being changed to be made equal or even just less offensive, they were removed entirely.
I really enjoyed Origin's initial depiction of demons. Since DA2, and now with DAI, demons are just random mooks that fall out of green holes. Their labeling exists only to paint them in a certain color and alert the player of a certain ability set. But initially, they represented the various sins and were integrated into the world in complex ways. I specifically enjoyed the concept of the desire demon because I think it offered the most complex and meaningful type of characterization to the player. The choices the desire demon gave to you were extremely varied and I found that really intriguing.
But now they're gone, almost retconned out of the game from what I understand, and I think that's a shame.
