Hey guys,

I'm just starting off and loving it so far.

I'm usually a die hard keyboard mouse guy, mostly due to the mouse look feel.

But I'm struggling with this one:

In battle, with all the fancy but perhaps over-the-top particle effects I'm struggling to see the mouse pointer. I always find it hard to use the 1-0 keys so I tend to use mouse wheel or quick bar. So with this game I have to pause the game just to work out where my pointer is to get it to the appropriate skill on the quick bar.

Also I find mouse clicks sometimes aren't noticed, especially in the War Room where I can't get the mouse to work at all. I have to change to A, D and Enter then back to mouse for the map.

I had a quick try with an Xbox controller and loved the 4 point point selection idea, although didn't try it for long. But I do struggle to look around with a controller. Just practice maybe? Or perhaps I'll always wish I was using a mouse.

And I must admit, there's some measure of deep-rooted resistance involved in the idea of controlling a Bioware RPG game with a controller. I even play Assassin's Creed with M&K and love it.

Anyway I'm curious what other PC players are using.

And especially any comments on the difficulties I've had with M&K or the concerns I have with controller.

Should I stick with M&K and hope I get better at using it, or should I move to controller and get used to that?

And by the way, I have nothing at all against controllers or consoles, so please don't think I'm knocking them in any way :)

Cheers

I quite like the KBM interface for Inquisition. I play every fight with the Tactical Camera, which I drive around using WASD. It makes perfect sense to me.

I had trouble at first as well, but I've gotten used to it by now and I don't have anymore problems.  Though it does sound like plenty of people haven't been able to adapt.

Using M&KB, as usual. I think it needs strong polishment, but is playable nonetheless. The main issue for me is the tactical camera; sometimes it gets stuck for no reason and zooms in suddenly (not to mention the inability to choose more than one companion to give orders).

If you are a regular M&KB gamer you should stick to it. Despite the initial difficulties, you'll get used to it in no time

Thanks

So if you're using M&K do you use the 1-0 keys?

Anyone using the quickslot bar? Or finding it hard to see your mouse pointer?

I wish it had a radial menu, I love those, quick and very precise. Not sure if we inherited them them from consoles...

:) I was wooed by the controller's 2x4 way skill selection thing.

When I saw it I thought 'And here's me searching for my mouse pointer like a sucker'

I tend to alternate between the two, but if have to click the quickslot bar, I need to pause. Sometimes it gets hard to see the pointer, yes. But also, I think I have this habit from Origins and DA2.

I'm getting on fine with Tactical Mode and the pause button, usually drop the camera down to a psuedo-DA:O style view (camera needs some serious tweaking to slacken it's leash though, Biofolks). I've started using the real-time combat in low-threat encounters more though, it's quite like SWTOR's combat (but pauseable) so it's not too much of a learning curve.

The PC controls are iffy, but workable. It's the tactical camera I loathe. I want to zoom out a lot more than it allows me. The lack of extra mouse button binding and various combat design decisions are more pressing to me. I still hate the 8 abilities limit and lack of healing, and will never agree with their reasoning for it.

Use the mouse and keyboard. In the beginning it was difficult, but now I manage.

Mouse and keyboard it is then. I will resist the shiny 4 way skill selection graphic.

It's encouraging to know others have stuck with it and got used to it.

Thanks :)

I'm not having any mouse pointer problems but that's maybe because I use the number keys in the real time and icons in tactical.  The camera was a pain at first but it's not that big an issue for me. Wouldn't say no to improvements of course.

I like it as well. I was surprised when I saw so many complaints about the PC controls. It's certainly DIFFERENT, but I remapped some keys and have had no problems. I would still like to see Auto-Attack and and Auto-Loot buttons implemented for ease, but that's a small thing. Loving this game.

Just to add:

I bind the W key to a spare mouse button to leave my left hand free for controls.

At first it was tricky, but yeah, I'm a bit confused by all the complaints.  It seems to be an overblown issue, but whenever I say that I get called a casual console n00b :P

the controls are bad only if you try to play the game as if it were DAO or DA2, if you treat it like a separate game they are perfectly fine

I don't understand how the inability to choose -for example- two companios to attack one enemy (or move, or whatever the reason) without controlling them separately has nothing to do with the game being "just different". Or the lack of zoom. Along with many other things that clearly are not well designed for PC controls.

I, too, got used to it, but its blatantly obvious DA:I was not conceived with PC controls in mind.

I have been forgoing use of the tactical camera because of how clunky it is.  I'm still very early in the game (and playing on normal difficulty), so I don't know how viable this strategy will be once things get more difficult.

That said, I actually find the multiplayer controls to be more aggravating.  Holding down the right mouse button so that I can move and swivel the camera at the same time is no problem (I do this all the time in SWTOR), but for some reason it doesn't seem to work as well as it should.

I gave up on KB+M after about 10 hours, plugged in my PC Xbox 360 controller, and haven't looked back (now 70+ hours in).

I'm still not overly happy with the interface and some of the controls but I think the game plays much better with a controller.

I would never use a controller for any game.   Its just not in my DNA.   After some key-rebinding, its not too unlike an MMO control scheme.    It just took a lot of getting used to the clunky camera system.

They could have spared themselves a lot of grief if they had implemented better mouse support.   Not having bindable mouse buttons and not scrolling the camera with the mouse cursor really marked the control system as a "console" port.

So while I absolutely love this game, I am not going to defend them on their control system choices.   PC gamers had been warning them for months and making suggestions from the start about what we wanted and what we would dislike.   If they chose not to listen to that feedback, then consequences are theirs to bear.

The controls are definately more like a MMO, which I'm very familiar and comfortable with. The huge issue I'm having is holding basic attack key down for long periods of times, which has caused significant pain in my wrist and fingers. So I have no option but to quit the game until a patch/mod releases that allows me to bind the keys to prevent further injury.

Out of curiosity, do you have a sort of condition that aggravates it?

I got use to it after a couple of hours. " Fans" Just over exaggerated on the forums of how " unplayable" it is/was.
