I'm wondering how the Romances work alongside the Approval system in this game, especially considering as far as I can tell there's no way to tell where you stand with your companions in this game. 

 

Can you "Rivalmance" like you did in DA2 (in particular I remember Merrill's romance arc was like 10x better if you went the Rivalry route)? Does Approval matter to the romances at all?

I ask b/c I got a Greatly Disapproves from Sera after a story decision who I was hoping to go for this game, and with no indicator of where I stand its hard to tell if I messed things up or not, or how to get things to progress.

I didn't like this either. Is having that bar saying your are close to them so hard

To my knowledge you can still have a romantic relationship with some of the characters, even with a low approval, though of course not if it goes too low (since they will leave you then). It all depends on which choices exactly and how low the approval rating goes.

It is the same the other way around too I think. You can easily have a high approval score, yet have a romance unavailable, based on pecific choices in the game.

This is my feeling as well. Cass also greatly disapproves of me once and has been disapproving me since the very beginning. I can mostly only get slight approvals from her most of the time. I didnt even flirt with her more than half the time but that does not seem to block out the romance option.
