The best staff i have is a white that does 71 damage. I was thinking about using my materials to build an elementalist or arcane warrior. Will having a lame staff cripple me with one of those characters?

I have had good luck getting decent weapons for every other class except for staff users. Would
I be better off waiting until i get a better staff?

Build the armor now and wait for a better staff.

You'll be fine up to threatening. I wouldn't go into perilous, but I've promoted my elementalist once and am now back up to 20 while using a terrible white staff (all I get are axes).

I have a decent staff for my muser's but the only big worry for me in that regard is not wracking up points from afar but it is when you have enemies getting past the front lines and charging you, that is when you need some staff damage.

it would be great to have a better staff.  I currently have a lvl14 100DPS purple (Fire, added spirit rune).  It does decent damage on routine, but far from a truly powerful staff.

that said, the Arcane Warrior is awesome.  just unlocked him yesterday.  personally I say go for that.  aside from the skills, dat fancy schmancy shiney David Bowie looking armor!!

also, he reminds me of Drizzt Do'Urden (dark elf/Drow) but with a staff instead of 2 scimitars, so added bonus for Drizzt fans.

The higher difficulties all benefit from a good Keeper, and there is a whole range of skills for this kit that do not relate to damage. They focus more for buffing your teammates and de-buffing the enemies.

A good Keeper is invaluable to team success while PUGging Threatening or Perilous; they can certainly increase the chances of success. I certainly wish more people would consider using this kit ...

I'd recommend building the Elementalist first.  Arcane Warrior is a great class, but they're much more dependent on having a good staff than the other casters.  They generate barrier based on the damage you deal, the less damage you deal the less barrier you generate, the less effective you are.

Currently the best staff (according to the spreadsheet someone posted on these forums) deals 126 dps. 70+ is decent and will do fine in threatening with all mage classes. 90+ is actually really good, you can't expect everyone to get a lvl 21+ unique with this loot system.

Arcane warriors strength is the abyss+fadecloak blast+melee combo. I'm doing just fine in perilous with a 76 dps (89 dps runed) staff. You will pop to full barrier as soon as your cloak blasts the group of enemies, then just keep wildly swinging at them to keep the barrier up.

I'd say AW is actually less dependant of a great staff because of that super OP combo.

A guy in my party last night was destroying stuff on routine last night with a low level arcane warrior, but he had a pretty decent blue staff. It did like 105 damage plus whatever othe buffs it came with. He was using a good combo of ranged and melee attacks.

I have also heard that elementalist can do some serious damage. I was leaning more towards the elementalist because i prefer ranged attacks. ( i use my legioneer for melee and group utility
utility).

Elementalist is a fun class.  His nuke from orbit spell is pretty good, however I can see how over time it might get team mates a bit angered by over use as it can distract from their targeting enemies.

Well on xbox one there is not much aiming to do. Seems like most of my kills are just from auto aiming. Lol

Hmm, can you equip the same item to more than one character?

Keeper is up there as one of my favorites to play.  I hope we get some more support kits in the future, maybe some type of bard'ish class?

It's a great combo, sure, but your lower DPS is going to make it a lot less forgiving if something goes wrong.  That great combo doesn't make the AW any less dependent on a good staff.  An AW with a higher DPS staff will have significantly more survive-ability than an AW who doesn't as they'll be able to generate more barrier per swing.  That point's not really up for debate, it's a pretty hard fact.  I'm not saying you can't get past that with a good keeper/tank, as the extra barrier is less important if you're not getting hit.  You're just going to have a lot less options in circumstances where you or a team mate has made a mistake and you're not in a position to use the Abyss-Fade Cloak combo.

A guy in my party last night was destroying stuff on routine last night with a low level arcane warrior, but he had a pretty decent blue staff. It did like 105 damage plus whatever othe buffs it came with. He was using a good combo of ranged and melee attacks.

105DPS is actually pretty decent for a staff.  As Mindtraveller mentioned, 126DPS is the un-runed damage of a 21 Unique, so I'd say the best you can hope to get out of a staff is ~160DPS.  My point isn't that you're not going to be able to do alright with a 70DPS staff on an AW, simply that it's going to be more difficult than if you were an Elementalist.

Elementalists have a lot to offer that is completely independent of your staff's damage.  Firestorm offers great crowd control on its own, you've got Death Siphon which is going to be feeding you 10% HP for every enemy killed near you (whether you got the kill or not), and Elementalists have the strongest barriers in the game (though you'll start consuming yours if you grab Chaotic Focus for that last +50% barrier strength), which is completely independent of your staff damage.  On top of that, Chaotic Focus will start boosting your spells as it consumes your barrier, so you're getting an additional damage boost to help make up for the lower staff damage.

So, I never said AW was a poor choice.  I simply said that it's more dependent on staff damage than Elementalist is, which it is.

Thanks. Weird that you can't with accessories or armor upgrades, though.

Are you sure? I've the same ring on almost everyone.

You can with accessories.  Upgrades are consumed when they're applied to an item, so if the upgrade is on the weapon you're using, it'll be on that weapon for every other class.

You sure about that?  I went through and was equipping the same ring and belt to several characters, I went back to look at the one previous to the one I had just equipped and they still had the ring and belt equipped.  I guess I'll have to check again this eve.

With some you can.  I have three rings.  One is for mage only, another for warrior only, but one fits any class.  No belts or amulets yet though so cannot confirm those.

Armor is the only item type that can not be used by multiple characters, the reason for this being solely that they're class specific, so no other class meets the requirements.

All items that can be equipped, can be equipped on any character that meets the usage requirements, regardless of whither it's equipped on another character.  All items.

If an item can not be equipped on your character, it is because you don't meet the usage requirements, not because it's equipped by another character.

Just a small update. I rolled the elementalist with my white staff that does 71 base damage. I upgraded the grip and blade.

I am level 14 now. ON routine i sweep the floors. I have an ability that rains 12 fireballs from the sky. It destroys large groups of enemies very fast.

On threatining i am still doing ok. The last room is pretty difficult, but i can still kill things pretty fast.
