Maybe minor spoilers....

Once we get the dramatic shot of it...we just walk in and own it.  This huge, magnificent fortress...and NO ONE is already there.  There should have been something there before we arrive.  It doesn't mean it had to be something cheesy like bandits or evil monsters.  It could have been a small village/commune, a small band of monks...anything.

It just seems silly that this huge place (in relatively good repair) is sitting their unoccupied.

I found that to be slightly humorous as well because, as you said, the place is HUGE... and empty?  No one seems to ever remember a story that it existed, or who may have been living there before it was abandoned...or they were chased away?

I can only assume that pieces of the puzzle come together as the storyline progresses.  I am actually a little surprised that there is not hidden chambers or something that you can locate which have bits of information on the previous owners.

I can only assume the previous owners wore a top hat and were giants.

There's definitely something mysterious about Skyhold...

Yes, that was also my first reaction. But then I was like, "Eh, I guess it's possible".

I thought you meant the mystery of your lush gardens and the glacial environment.

Also bothersome, the fact that getting to the war room has so many doors it feels like the intro to Get Smart.

Maybe it was never there, but is now.

Sometimes I rewrite little pieces of the game to make it fit better in my head.  You could just pretend you slaughtered the natives of the castle before claiming it, if you want.  It is Thanksgiving time here in the US, after all.

Love the Get Smart reference because that is exactly the tune I had going through my head last night while making my way from the war room to the garden.  Five doors...two of which are on either side of a very small room with no purpose other than an opportunity to place another door, I suppose.

I think that

Spoiler

but I don't know why the people who've used it before abandoned it, exactly. Probably because it is quite literally in the middle of nowhere, and the most usual candidates to take over abandoned fortresses (bandit gangs etc.) wouldn't have the resources or the manpower to occupy or take care of it. When you find it, the place's crumbling down: everything from its foundation and scaffolding needs fixing. With the Inquisition's power and contacts you get enough money and supplies to actually do that, but even then it takes time to get everything fixed and up and running.

Considering the snowy trek through the mountains it took to get there, were you expecting squatters to set up camp without the ability to garner resources for themselves?

I'm sure they could easily grow food and livestock in the magically temperate zone in and around Skyhold.

Judging by the appearance, I assumed it was started but never finished a loooong time ago.  Then forgotten by everyone but Yeti hunters, who obviously have a short lifespan.
